Dear Fathers, Brothers and Sisters
May the peace and Joy of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us
all!
All our schools and institutions have re-opened. It has
once again given us an opportunity to lead our children to
Christian maturity and knowledge, may the guiding spirit
of the Lord and the maternal assistance of our Blessed
Mother be with all our schools and institutions.
We have just concluded the Year of Priests. It was a God-
given Gift. We have really benefited by it. Though the
Church encounters several serious problems, the priests
all over the world are resilient enough to re-commit
themselves as disciples of Christ. The life of a priest is
demanding and at the same time rewarding because we
are able to witness the healing power of Christ in us. The
Year of Priests was concluded on June, 11, 2010 at Rome,
2
on the day of the Feast of Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Holy
Father celebrated the Eucharist surrounded by Cardinals,
Bishops, hundreds of priests, religious and people. We do
thank the Church and the Holy Father for this gift.
The Church in Tamil Nadu, which concluding the Year of
Priests, has given another gift to the youth of our State.
The TNBC which comprises of 20 Dioceses, declared a
Year of Youth, 2010-2011. It is indeed a precious gift to
our Church and especially to our youth, the future of the
Church. When we say this, it does not mean only the
youth, but the entire Church, and encourage all
components of the Church to build up the vital parts of the
Church.
Christ demanded of the young man, “There is still one
thing left for you; sell all that you have and distribute it to
the poor and you will have a treasure in heaven. Then
come and follow me.” (Lk 18:22). This is the challenge
that the Lord has placed before the young man. The young
man of today and his state of mind and attitude is no
different from that young man. The Church would like its
young to grow and come up to its expectation. It is not only
the responsibility of the Church to build its young, but the
young in turn must play an active and committed role in
building the Church
We have to concentrate on four aspects of development.
The principal aim of every activity of the Church, be it
education or social development, it should aim at giving
3
our young ‘Human Maturity’. Let the young rise and shine
so that the world which is losing its humanity may get
back to its full maturity. By building this in our young, we
will build up a human world.
The second we must help the young “to encounter Christ”.
They must be helped to meet with and become friends of
Christ. This is real challenge. Like the rich young man of
the above Gospel passage must ask the same question to
Jesus and encounter the answer of Christ. They must
encounter Jesus both in the Word of God and in
Sacraments.
The third aspect is that “the young belong to the Church”.
It is very important aspect. This is where we priests and
religious can play a vital role. They are the property of the
Church. The religious who have received various Charisms
to build the Church must certainly realize that the young
must be brought up as the property of the Church. The
young must be made to realize this. This will lead us to
the realization of the responsibility of the priests and
religious. Further, as the young belong to the Church, the
young also must understand that the Church has a right
to shape them. They must be built as the worthy sons of
the Church. It is not enough just to help the young in the
mode of happiness, but they must enter deeply into the
life of the Church.
The fourth is “they must be men of commitment for the
Kingdom”. This is the result of belonging to the Church.
4
Mere words are not enough, but commitment in action
should become the order of the day. This commitment
must lead them to real action in the realm of faith,
education, social, economics, culture, politics, preservation
and cultivation of nature etc. Social communication and
Media education must become integral part of growth.
Their involvement in the social teachings of the Church is
a must.
These are the four aspects of growth that we must
concentrate during this Year of Youth.
Let us Clergy especially use this year as an opportunity to
love our youth and consider them partners in building the
Church or rather they are future of the Church. It is from
them, priests, religious and responsible leadership among
laity, good Catholic families are to emerge. It is part of the
mission of the Church.
‘Come and see’ the invitation given by Jesus may be
extended to our youth. May the Lord, Jesus Christ become
the object of our youth and the love of the Good Shepherd
be their inspiration. Let our Mother, who encountered
Christ as a young lady, be the source of inspiration, model
and guide in building our youth. Let them advance in
wisdom and age and favour before God and man.

Prayer Intentions
Let us pray that in every nation of the world the election
of officials may be carried out with justice, transparency
and honesty, respecting the free decisions of citizens.
Let us pray that Christians may strive to offer everywhere,
but especially in great urban centers, effective contribution
to the promotion of education, solidarity and peace.
