The United Mine Workers of America representssome of the most exploited workers in the U. S.
C01l Canada - the coal miners. Founded in l890~
during a great wave of industrial strife~ it hasto its credit the hardest fought lahor battlesin (])lr history. Every union man and woman shou ldknow their names: Logan VaUey~ Ludlow~ HarlanCounty. At these and a thousand other places~
the UMW has held the line against the mostruthless corporations in the world. The UMW'smany martyrs are a testimony to its determinationto mine coal under decent conditions~ for union'iJa~s.
Arnold Mi ller is a rank and fi le miner from7cbin Creek~ West Virginia. He was swept intooffice on a tide of anger and militancy in thenines. A victim of black lung disease~ he hascarried the demands of the miners for healthyworking conditions into the UMW's presidency. We salute Arnold MiZler for his courage in thestruggle of Miners for Democracy ~ for his com~ittment to organizing the unorganized.
The UMW founded the CIG. Now it is in a fightto unionize the mines of Eastern Kentucy. Thestrikers at Duke Power Co. 's Brookside~ Kentucky~mine~ have faced scabs~ gun-thugs and hostilecourts for over a year. Their wives and daughtershaw fought the scabs and gone to jail. To theBrookside strikers we say; may the strike live

WHICH SIDE ARE YOU 00
Come all of you good workers, good newsto you I'll tell
Of how the good old union has come inhere to dwell
Chorus: Which side are you on,Which side are on?
My daddy was a miner, and I'm a miner's son,And I'll stick with the Union, till every
battle's won.

LINKS ON THE CHAIN
Corne ye ranks of labor, corne to the union foreAnd see if you remember, the struggle of beforeWhen you were standing helpless on the outside
of the doorAnd you started building links on the chain,
on the chainAnd you started building links on the chain.
When the police on, the horses were waitingon demand
Riding through the strike with a pistol intheir hand
Swinging at the skulls of many union menAs you build one more link on the chain,
on the chainA s you build one more link on the chain.
And the army of the fascists tried to put youon the run
But the army of the union, they did whatcould be done
Oh the power of the factory was greater thanthe gun
As you built one more link on the chain,on the chain
As you built one more link on the chain.
And then in 1954, decisions finally madeOh the black ,man was arising fastRaising from the shameAnd your union took no standsAnd your union was betrayedAs you lost yourself a link on the chain,
on the chainAs you lost yourself a link on the chain.
And then there came the boycottAnd then the freedom ridesAnd forgetting what you stood forYou tried to block the tide
(con' t.)
And the automation bosses were laughing onthe side '
As they wat:::::hed you lose your links on thechains. on the chains
As they watched you lose your links, on the chain.
1md then when they block your trucksby laying on the road
All that they are doing is all that you have shownThct you gotta strike, you've gotta fightTo get what you are owedWhen you're building all your links on the chain
on the chainWhen you're building all your links on the chain.
And the man who tries to tell you that they'lltake your job away
Is the same man who was scabbing hard just theother day
And your union's not a union till' he's thrownout cf the way
And he's choking on your links on the chainon the chain
And he's choking on your links on the chain.
And now the times are telling you that timesare rolling on
And you're fighting for the same thingsFor jobs that will be gone.
Now it's only fair to ask you, boys,Which side are you on?As you're building all your links on the chainAs you're building all your links on the chain.
