Meliá Braco Village, Trelawny
“Security and Justice: Global Priorities”
FACULTY OF LAW
3rd Annual Symposium on Law, Governance and Society
VICE-CHANCELLOR’s Message
The world is currently experiencing tremendous
geopolitical tensions which will ultimately impact
on how countries engage with each other, within
regional blocs and even within themselves. The
widespread use of ICTs that transcend internation-
al borders exposes individuals and corporations to
hacking, attacks by criminals such as the lottery
scammers, libel, and other forms of abuse for
which legal recourse is required. Crime in its
many forms has been cited as a deterrent factor in
development in our region. The justice system
must be adept and agile in how it responds.
The legal fraternity in the Caribbean has to be aware of what is taking place
globally in order to respond locally. They have to be able to interpret outdated
laws to ensure that the citizenry is adequately protected. The fraternity must
also advocate for changes in the laws to ensure that they are adequately pre-
pared for the future. You, the participants at this Symposium are the people
largely responsible for all the foregoing.
Congratulations to the Faculty of Law for hosting another important
symposium and my sincere thanks to each of you for taking the time out to
engage in this important discussion.
My best wishes for a successful Symposium.
Blessings, Sir Hilary Beckles PhD, BA(Hons) Vice-Chancellor The University of the West Indies
