The 2017 RISC Organising Committee and ANZIIF are pleased to announce the ninth annual John Allison Award. This award is in honour of John Allison’s 50-year contribution to the reinsurance industry and, in particular, the Reinsurance International Study Course.
The award will be presented to the top performer at the 2017 Reinsurance International Study Course and the winner will receive a trophy acknowledging the achievement.
The award will be decided using the criteria detailed below and presented to the winner during lunch on Wednesday 23 August.
Criteria:• Demonstrated enthusiasm for the reinsurance ‘product’ and someone already succeeding in their
company in the area of reinsurance • One who displayed the pre-reading and general knowledge of the reinsurance market principles and
procedures • Candidate must have a good grasp of the need for networking amongst their peers • One who had already participated in industry activities/had offered extra-curricular support for
reinsurance endeavours • One who displayed leadership in the Syndicate sessions • Showed ‘colour’ in their character.
The Syndicate Advisors will use the above criteria to nominate one person from their Syndicate to the judges. The decision of the judges is final.

Testimonials from previous award recipients
“ RISC entrenches in participants an understanding of numerous topics including the strategic and technical placement of Reinsurance, Catastrophe modelling as well as the current market landscape (and the reinsurance lifecycle) and regulatory requirements. The course is delivered in a highly engaging manner – participants were required to present to a fictional board of directors their strategy, risk appetite and therefore reinsurance purchase. Attended by lawyers, underwriters, brokers, catastrophe modellers and participants from various industries, the course also offers a good opportunity to build up a network of contacts.
Winning the John Allison Award was a discussion point during my XL Catlin interview process – it was an advantage to be able to display a high level of recognition for the range of skills required for the job (gained during the course).”
~ Lisa Hiscock, XL Catlin
“ RISC was a fantastic experience and a course I believe could be completed multiple times and something new would be learned. The amount of reinsurance knowledge in the room was incredible, from the presenters, to facilitators and the participants; there was opportunity to learn from everyone. It was also a fantastic networking opportunity with lots of fun events in the evenings. I would highly recommend this course to anyone working within the industry and am so thankful to have won the John Allison Award. It is a privilege!”
~ Lisa Connolly, Gen Re
“ I was the recipient of the John Allison Award in 2011 and I recall my pride at sharing the achievement with those close to me both professionally and personally. This award has meant much more than academic achievement; for me it showed that I gained recognition from experienced leaders in a market which is underpinned by respect.
Within Catlin this has assisted in raising my profile at a senior level, illustrating my development and assisting with future career progression. I have also received good feedback from the market, not only from people who attended Windsor, which shows that this award is well recognised within the wider reinsurance industry.”~ Emma Hill, XL Catlin Australia (previously Catlin)
