Issue 07 2018
Term 1 Week 7
March 14 2018

Dear parents,
At our weekly management meetings, we have been discussing what makes HCCS unique. We have already established that Faith, Nurture,
Learning and Community are key elements to the fabric of HCCS. It has also become clear very quickly that our location and access to the
natural environment is very different from most schools.
We already have a wonderful Nature Play area that we will continue to develop to provide real life outdoor learning experiences for our
students. The Year 7 students have benefitted from large open outdoor areas to grow a wide selection of vegetables as part of the Garden to
Kitchen Program.
Recently through the tiresome work of Rinny Lions and Sam Tolhurst we have been able to open up the property on the Eastern Side of the
Onkaparinga which we have informally titled the Faraway Lands. This is an expansive space that has allowed for exploration and lunchtime
I would love to provide AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PARENTS
TO VENTURE INTO ‘THE FARAWAY LANDS’ and I will be
providing a PERSONAL TOUR for any interested parents
and community members.
If you would like to be part of the first parent group to cross over
Lions Bridge and witness first-hand the wonder of ‘The Faraway
Tree’, please BOOK YOUR PLACE by emailing Kirby Toma:
God Bless,
Tony Fielke (Principal)

'A Christian school community, helping children learn and grow to achieve their potential'.
Last week I met with Jeremy Grant from Natural Resource
Management (NRM) to formalise programs we can offer using this
untapped area.
Natural Resource Management Education programs uses a whole-
school approach when working with school or pre-school
communities to plan and manage ongoing sustainability initiatives.
This is leading to improved educational and environmental
outcomes linked to the Australian Curriculum and the Early Years
Learning Framework. NRM Education encourages schools and pre-
schools to embrace sustainability principles in their learning and
management practices to help develop more sustainable
communities. We plan to use Jeremy and the NRM to build on the
wonderful work done previously by Catherine Kelly and our Parent
Environment Group to provide a range of outstanding outdoor
learning experiences for our students that are not possible in most
school environments.

‘THE FARAWAY LANDS’ TOUR WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28TH, 9.30AM
Please keep this space clear
The bus cannot park properly if cars are parked in this space therefore all traffic behind the bus must stop which congests traffic even more.
There has been an issue with the bus parking near our traffic lights in the afternoon as there has been a car parked in that space.
Please help us with this issue to keep the traffic flowing. THANK YOU!

SACSA Swimming
Last week, HCCS took a group of 13 students, 12 swimmers and a recorder to the Adelaide Aquatic Centre for the Inaugural (or first in 10 years) SACSA (South Australian Christian Schools Association) Swimming Carnival.
It is the first and possibly only event where we are able to join across both the Primary and Secondary Year Levels, with HCCS students from Year 4 to Year 12 competing.
It was a fantastic day of competition with some fantastic results with 14 students winning races, another 10 placing with a ribbon of some colour and many other great swims. The students all had a fantastic attitude, always swimming their best, even if they had to swim in an age group above what they should have been swimming.
As a result of their performances and despite having some age groups not represented, we finished in 3
rd
position overall out of 10 schools. We were three points behind 2
nd and about 60 behind 1
st. Both of
these schools had nearly 30 swimmers on the day, but we will have to wait until next year to take them down and win the day.
I am very proud of all of the students and their efforts throughout the day. It was a fantastic result and a great day of swimming.
I would also like to thank all of the parents who attended for all or part of the day, supporting their child and the rest of the team. A special thank you to Nerida Bell, Pedro Martins and Richard Kernot for their help and support to get students to and from the venue; time keeping on the day and making sure students got to their events on time. All of your help and support was greatly appreciated.
