Ventilated rainscreen
System principle
The facade cladding
The climate
Today ventilated rainscreens are amongst the mostsuccessful facade systems. Current facade market studiesshow that architects mainly appreciate the design possibilitiesof ventilated rainscreens in addition to the functional safety.
The ventilated rainscreen system permits use of a varietyof cladding materials. The facade design thus can bematched individually to the character of a building. Materialcombinations, too, can be easily implemented, by usingdifferent cladding materials.
A great variety of materials is available to cover a ventilatedrainscreen. Durability, light-fastness and frost resistanceof these materials are the basic requirements for theincreasingly demanded longevity of the facade.
Proven materials are ceramics, fine stoneware, naturalstone, HPL and fibre-reinforced composite resin panels, fibre cement panels and others. Moreover, the panelsupport systems can be used for individual applications withroughcast, glass, natural stone and ceramics.
The insulation components (thermal insulation, fireprotection) and the cladding (weather protection) arestructurally separate in the ventilated rainscreen system. The ventilated space between the components controls thehumidity within the building structure: any humidity is reliablyremoved via the ventilated space. Damp external wallsdry out in a very short time. This also ensures an optimuminternal climate inside the building.

The insulation
The association
The two-layer system of the ventilated rainscreensystematically separates the weather protection andinsulation functions. Use of mineral insulation materialof thermal conductivity groups 040 or 035 is commonfor ventilated rainscreens for every building height andutilisation. The requirements of the Energy SavingRegulations are thus easily met as the installation of anythickness of insulation required is possible with this system.A later increase in thickness is also possible under certaincircumstances.
The German Association for Construction Materials and Components for Ventilated Rainscreens(FVHF) is a body representing the interests of the manufacturers of claddings, supportstructures, thermal insulation materials as well as anchoring, joining and fixing elements forventilated rainscreens (VHF) with registered office in Berlin.
The association has the objective of promoting the structurally and architecturally demandingimplementation and design of facades for new build and renovation, taking account of allecological aspects.
One of the main tasks of the FVHF is to provide information on the benefits and characteristicsof ventilated rainscreens to affect public opinion, planners, associations and decision-makers by means of a proactiveinformation policy.
The FVHF supports a uniform approval system for construction of ventilated rainscreens and the standardisation ofthis construction method and its components. To push the technical and economic progress of facade construction, the association supports applied research and draws up recommendations as well as standards. The FVHF alsoparticipates in the drawing up and introduction of national and international standards.

The support structureThe support structure is the static link between the structuralexternal wall and the facade cladding. Aluminium and woodor a combination of them are available as materials for thesupport structure. Aluminium has prevailed in the majorityof cases. Aluminium support structures can be adjusted inthree dimensions and lie against the building structure freefrom stress. Any unevenness and wall projections can becompensated to achieve a perfect horizontal and verticalalignment. Aluminium support structures can also be highlyeffectively integrated into the lightning protection system, even if the cladding is non-conductive.

Undercut technology
The story of undercutting
Designing facades
Technically mature and with building approval
Even in ancient times, fixings with positive fit were known. Inthose days, “undercut” holes were chiselled into stones andthe fasteners were potted with lead.
This particular type of fixing was also common in the MiddleAges, it was, for example, used in the construction of Colognecathedral, near KEIL Befestigungstechnik GmbH.
Solid external walls of natural stone are no longer regardedas in keeping with the times. The structural requirements onexternal walls have increased and cover thermal and soundinsulation, fire protection and damp-proofing. The wishes andrequirements of the building owners with regard to the designof attractive high-quality surfaces, combining a broad varietyof materials in a facade, have also risen.
The visible attachment of a facade panel with screws, brackets or even rivets restricts the design freedom of thearchitect. Therefore, professionals use an attachment systemwhich the observer of the finished facade no longer “sees”.This also avoids dirt deposits on all attachment componentsand thus the formation of dirt and rust streaks.
The undercut attachment of the facade panels for ventilated rainscreens aretoday state of the art. The German Institute for Construction Technology (DIBt)has drawn up an approval concept for this.
General building approvals are granted for construction products and methodswhich come under the regional building regulations and for which there are nogenerally accepted technical rules, in particular DIN standards, or which deviatefrom them significantly.
General building approvals are granted by the German Institute for ConstructionTechnology for all German states. They represent an assessment of the usabilityand practicality of the subject of the approval with regard to the approvalrequirements.

ETA
Undercut technology
Internationally approved
In cooperation with professional facade builders
The European Technical Assessment (Approval) (ETA) is proof of thesuitability of a construction product under the Construction ProductRegulation which has been implemented in Germany with the ConstructionProduct Law. The ETA is based on tests, examinations and a technicalassessment by bodies appointed by the EU member states for this purpose. It covers all product characteristics which may be important for meetingthe legal requirements of the member states, though the performance levelrequired nationally may vary.
The manufacturer confirms with the CE marking that the verificationprocedure specified has been carried out and that the product conforms tothe assessment (approval).
Today, the construction of ventilated rainscreens using undercut attachmentis a normal part of the range of services of competent facade builders. Theundercut holes are drilled in the workshop to the specific requirements ofeach project so that a high degree of pre-assembly is provided.
The quality of this pre-assembly of the components is monitored andcontributes appreciably to an accurate fit, safe fitting and, in particular, toshort installation times. For infill panels and other adaptations, the undercutholes can be produced on site with a specially developed drill. This simplifiedsite production is expressly authorised by the general building approval.
Proven in all the climatic zones of the world andearthquake-proofWorldwide, many millions of undercut plugs have been successfully usedover the last few years. This method has proven itself in countries in allclimatic zones, in continuously hot climates, in tropical storm regions and inregions with severe winters.
In contrast to attachment by gluing, the undercut attachment is a purelymechanical attachment. This results in an installation which is independent oftemperature and climate in conjunction with a very high level of pre-assembly.
The KEIL undercut system, in particular, offers the highest level of safety dueto its stress-free installation, without any danger of stress cracks at the hole.
This attachment technology is a requirement in regions prone toearthquakes, among others. The stability up to magnitude 9.4 on the open-ended Richter scale has been proven. Prestigious buildings which haveused KEIL undercut technology have already survived earthquakes intact inTaiwan and Japan, amongst others.

Undercutting
A cylindrical hole is drilled and then conically undercut in onestep with only one tool.
Different levels of automation are possible depending onmachine type and material.
The drilling time in ceramics is less than 10 seconds.
Panels of any size or weight are given an undercut of preciseand uniformly symmetrical shape.
hole Ø 7 mmundercut Ø 9 mm
To prepare for installation, an undercut anchor is inserted intothe hole and tightened to a positive fit using a screw.
Quick, simple and safe with normal tools, e.g. a cordlessscrewdriver.
Safety and product liability require that the KEIL undercut attachment system is alwaysused as a unit. Correct functioning is ensured only if matching KEIL products (anchor withscrew or threaded pin, drill head and facade drill bits) are used together. Their use as asystem has also been stipulated in the approvals granted and applied for. The compo-nents of the KEIL undercut attachment system are protected by patent.

The KEIL undercut anchor, for invisible attachment of thin panels,is manufactured from stainless steel.
Its geometry, matched to the KEIL undercut hole, appliesmaximum loads to the panels in an optimum manner.
This geometry ensures stress-free attachment in all commonlyused panel materials from 6 mm thickness.
Depending on panel thickness or carrying capacity required, different insertion depths (hS) are available. The KEIL undercutanchor is designed in such a way that it withstands a greater loadthan just the weight of the panel.
The KEIL undercut anchor offers major benefits due to thehigh installation integrity. The anchor is placed quickly, easilyand safely at a controlled depth for all panel thicknessesin an optimum installation by using matching KEIL systemcomponents: anchor, panel bracket and KEIL locking screw withintegral locking mechanism.
Only two parts (anchor sleeve and screw) are required for safeattachment. Additional screw-in parts for the KEIL undercutanchor provide individually tailored connection options, such as
hS = 4,0mm hS = 5,5mm hS = 7,0mm hS = 8,5mm
hS = 10,0mm hS = 11,5mm hS = 13,0mm hS = 15,0mm

► The undercut anchor consists of an anchor sleeve and its hex screw.► Hole, anchor sleeve and screw length have to be matched to the hole depth required and to the panel bracket
chosen. Only the use of matching components results in quick, simple and safe installation.► The anchor sleeve, which is compressed in the lower end, is placed in the hole with the specified panel
bracket.► The screw is screwed in while exerting slight pressure on the panel bracket (to fix the anchor). The locking
mechanism of the screw cuts into the panel bracket to secure it.► The panel bracket forms a rigid unit with the KEIL facade anchor for this type of installation.► The anchor sleeve is expanded to its original dimension by inserting the screw to a controlled depth,
so that the sleeve sits snugly against the undercut section of the hole in the facade panel. After installation, the anchor sits stress-free in the undercut hole (i.e. the bracket can still be rotated with a certain amount ofeffort).

General installation instructions
The undercut holes on the back of the facade panels must be madeusing KEIL System tools under workshop conditions.
The KEIL System tools comprise the KEIL facade drill bit, the KEILdrill head and the undercutting and drilling machine (e.g. KEIL porta-ble drill, KEIL bench drill or automatic drilling machine with KEIL drillhead).
The undercut hole is produced in one step (cylindrical drilling [1] andundercutting [2]).
Correct installation of the undercut anchor is possible only if aprecisely undercut hole exists [3]. The hole geometry is regularlymonitored with the KEIL gauge matching the insertion depth of theanchor. The hole depth is set by means of this gauge, and all majorhole dimensions can be checked efficiently with it.
The undercut anchor consists of an anchor sleeve and its hex screw.
Hole, anchor sleeve and screw length have to be matched to thehole depth required and to the panel bracket chosen. Only the use ofmatching components results in quick, simple and safe installation.
The anchor sleeve, which is compressed in the lower end, is placedin the hole with the specified panel bracket [4].
The screw is screwed in while exerting slight pressure on the panelbracket (to fix the anchor) [5]. The locking ratchets of the screw cutsinto the panel bracket to secure it.
The panel bracket forms a rigid unit with the KEIL facade anchor forthis type of installation.
The anchor sleeve is expanded to its original dimension by insertingthe screw to a controlled depth, so that the sleeve sits snugly againstthe undercut section of the hole in the facade panel. After installation, the anchor sits stress-free in the undercut hole (i.e. the bracket canstill be rotated with a certain amount of effort).

General installation instructions
View of drilled hole geometry
Correct functioning is only guaranteed if all components of the KEIL undercut facade system are used. Expansionof the anchor sleeve controlled by insertion depth requires precise matching of the screw length to the anchor andpanel bracket by KEIL. Production of the undercut holes and installation should be carried out under workshopconditions.Workshop conditions in this sense can also be created on site.
The dimensions of the undercut hole are to be monitored in accordance with the regulations in force. The appro-vals, standards, guidelines and relevant regulations applicable to design and use must be observed.
Once the new Construction Product Regulations within the EU are ratified, instead of a ‘declaration of conformity’a CE marking is required for a declaration of performance. ETA’s will in the future not make reference to, or provideinformation with respect to a products application. For further information regarding the corresponding productapplication it can be found (download area) at the following website www.keil.eu
Anchor sleeves and locking screws for specified clamping thicknessesIf the appropriate screw is used for a defined clamping thickness, the insertion depth is always correct! Installationis quick, easy and safe in this case. Similarly, the system ensures that the precise insertion depth is guaranteedfor KEIL plug-in anchors. The screwed-in part must be flush with the anchor sleeve at the front.
CAUTION: Before final installation, it must be checked whether the screwed-in part is flush with the anchor sleeveat the front and whether the correct installation tool is being used, by means of a test assembly.
Anchor sleeves and grub screws for variableclamping thicknessesThe correct insertion depth is guaranteed if theappropriate installation tool, the KEIL screw driver,is used and the installation steps described beloware followed. The appropriate projection Ü isautomatically obtained.
Installation steps:
D1D2hhSxAxZ
= hole diameter (dia. 7 mm)= undercut diameter (≥ dia. 9 mm)= panel thickness (from 6 mm)= insertion depth of undercut anchor (tD)= anchor hex head (3 mm)= thickness of panel bracket (clamping thickness)
1.2.3.
4.5.
Place anchor sleeve into undercuted hole.Place grub screw in screw driver.Hold anchor sleeve with open-ended spanner andscrew in grub screw with screw driver to stop. -Release screw driver handle -Check dimension ÜScrew on panel bracket with nut.
