Another bad geographic break is Siberia’s vast continentality, the land simply stretches on and on; eventually you feel you’re in the farthest, out-of-sight section of the country. Only on the sea can you travel as far and still be in apparently the same place. The deeper into Siberia, the farther from the regulating effect of temperature from the oceans, the harsher the climate’s extremes become. Summers in the middle of Siberia are hot, sometimes dry and dusty, sometimes hazy with smoke from taiga(forest) fires. In the winters, temperatures drop to the lowest on the planet outside Antarctica. In the city of Verkhoyansk, in northeast-central Siberia, the cold reaches about -90°.
Because of the cold, a lot of central Siberia and most of the east lie under permafrost — ground permanently frozen, sometimes to more than three thousand feet down. Permafrost also covers all the tundra region. Agriculture on any large scale is impossible in the permafrost zone.
Cities and villages in the permafrost zone must have basic necessities brought in. Fuel comes in steel barrels that are about three feet high and hold fifty-three gallons. Around settled places these empty barrels are everywhere, sometimes littering the bare tundra as far as you can see. In 1997, the Los Angeles Times estimated that in Chukotka, the part of farthest Siberia just across from Alaska, the Soviets had left behind about two million barrels. Today, there are more barrels than people in Chukotka.

1. According to this information from Country Studies, what is one example of HEI (Human Environment Interaction) being used during winters in the permafrost region of Russia?

__________________________________________________________________________________________
Russia has a largely continental climate because of its sheer size and compact configuration. Most of its land is more than 250 miles from the sea, and the center is 2400 miles from the sea. In addition, Russia’s mountain ranges, predominantly to the south and the east, block regulating temperatures from the Indian and Pacific oceans. The long, cold winter has a profound impact on almost every aspect of life in the Russian Federation. It affects where and how long people live and work, what kinds of crops are grown, and where they are grown (no part of the country has a year-round growing season). The length and severity of the winter, together with the sharp fluctuations in the summer and winter temperatures, impose special requirements on many branches of the economy. In regions of permafrost, buildings must be constructed on pilings, machinery must be made of specially tempered steel, and transportation systems must be engineered to perform reliably in extremely low and extremely high temperatures. In addition, during extended periods of darkness and cold, there are increased demands for energy, health care, and textiles.
