President’s Message

Line: As you will see, tango in particular has beautiful lines.

Shape: In tango there is the gancho, boleo, secada, barrida, colgada, ocho,

parada and volcada, to name a few.

Color: The costumes in dance are works of art in their own right: Colorful,

flowing, beautiful.

Balance: One of the critical skills of a good dancer is their ability to turn on

one foot and perform other moves without relying upon their partner for

support.

Rhythm: Well, if you can’t keep rhythm with the music, dancing may not be

for you!

Space: Correct spacing is critical. Too close to your partner or another

couple and you bump into each other. Too far from your partner and you

lose connection.

Variety: Nobody wants to see or even dance the same moves all night.

Followers and audiences enjoy being surprised.

Form: Posture is critical. Lunges must have only one leg bent or the dancer

looks like they are squatting. Toes should point to elongate the legs.

Unity and Harmony: The couple needs to move together as one unit.

Contrast: Varity of speed, intensity, and height improve the dance quality.

Area of interest: Both partners need to look at and have their upper bodies

“flashlight” toward each other, not only for appearances, but to keep a

connection with one another in order to dance in unity.

UWS Paint Spot September/October 2018

I have always wanted to marry my

two loves together: Dance and Art.

For our September meeting I invited

my Argentine Tango friends to come

and perform for UWS. This is a photo

op, or if you are a fast sketcher, a

drawing and or painting opportunity.

I feel that performing arts and visual

arts have all the same elements. So

putting the two together is very

exciting. Here is such a list of art

elements and how I see them as they

pertain to Argentine tango.

As Anne of Green Gables might say,

both art and dance are very

“romantical”. I hope this experiment

goes well and that both dancers and

artists have a great experience!

UWS partnered with Red Butte Gardens

this summer for a marvelous meld of

botanical inspiration. 85 entries from 57

artists, some entering a show for their first

time, transformed the foyer with color and

style. Since Red Butte Gardens is a

popular attraction in Salt Lake City,

visitation to the UWS show was high,

raising awareness of UWS, watercolor as

a medium and resulting in 36 sales

overall. Thanks to all who helped make it

happen and all who participated in this

exciting event!

A closer look reveals subtlety in color, poetic impressions, and serene

beauty. “I am very conscious of my edges and never say ‘too much’. I think

it is important to leave some mystery, some room for imagination. When

you look at the finished piece, it is remarkable what you think you see that

is not really there! For me, that is one of the most beautiful things about

painting in watercolor!” Conveying atmosphere is Frank’s specialty. In fact,

it is the basis of all his work and teaching. Frank currently focuses on

watercolor and oils.

Apprentices Needed

This Year! The Arts and the Park Chair, Membership Chair, and Newsletter Chair need apprentices this year. The year will

be spent training for the 2019-20 year. If you have an interest in supporting your watercolor society and would like

to give back, please contact Julie Ickes, President UWS, Mary Pusey, Newsletter Editor, Art Sleeper, Membership,

or Maura Naughton, Arts and the Park.

October 1-5, 2018

Definitely a painter’s painter, Frank Eber works in a direct,

loose style influenced by the Old World masters. Typical in his art

are color mixes and light that evoke nostalgia while remaining

absolutely in the present. Frank’s watercolor workshops reach

beyond technique, encouraging individual expression and

observing the elusive balance of forces that create beauty in

painting. The techniques you will learn in Frank’s workshops

transcend the watercolor medium, as they, acrylics, tempera,

pastels.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:

"Painting should go deeper than copying nature as it is. It should be a personal response and a characterization of

what is before us and in harmony with it. I try to understand a scene, but not intellectually. I can paint it how it is, that’s

easy. The interpretation of the thing that’s underneath–what gives it life–I’d like to find. The energy that makes it. In

essence I am trying to paint what cannot be painted.”

Please joins us for our Fall Workshop with a Nationally Known Artist. Franks Ebers personal style and eagerness to

work with each student is certain to create a memorable workshop experience.

Questions: Linda Flannery, workshop coordinator.
