Objectives of our workshop:

We will:

1. Describe examples of innovative use of IT to enhance teaching in the context of the University of Bahrain

2. Explain how IT can be used to enhance the students’ learning experience both in theory and in practice

3. Design a new learning and teaching activity for the coming year, with an IT element, together with a framework to analyze its effectiveness

4. Discuss how your own use of IT reflects wider pedagogical beliefs and conceptions about the role of the lecturer, the role of the student and the role of technology at UoB

Protocol:

- Stand up

- Statement on the screen.

- You have 30 seconds to think about it (react to it: do you agree, why, why not….)

- Pair up with someone and, for 2mn, share/discuss your response.

- We then repeat this three other times / with different questions / speak with other people

About the terminology:

There is not “one authoritative definition” for these terms

Definitions differ by:

• Scholars/specialists/managers

• Institution/university

• Country/culture

will you want to create your own institutional glossary?

ADVANTAGE: common framework, common terms (beneficial for all stakeholders)

But also:

“Smart learning”

• Smart phone

• Smart home

• Smart watch

-> idea of “connected-ness”

How “smart” is smart?

• Discuss which one corresponds to you and your practice, and why

• You do not have to reach an agreement (at each table) but you need to justify/explain your choices
