ARE YOU A RELUCTANTLEARNER?It sounds WEIRD, right? Howcan you say I’m a reluctantlearner? If I’m reluctant, whywill I learn? I’m sure thesequestions pops in your head;let us accept it without furtherargument. In most cases wehave this habit of I will do itlater, I still have time, I’m tiredtoday, today I’ve got headache,my mom asked me to cooktoday, and on and on… theexcuses continues. As a resultwhen you have less time andmore books to study say duringthe year-end near ing finalexaminations, you are beingmentally swamped and literallyweighed down. You areoverloaded with informations.Let me in troduce you atechnique to help you solvethis procrastination , thePomodoro Technique. In 1980s Francesco Cirillocame up with this technique. The steps are:i. Nointerruption, decide the task, make your room a favourableplace to study. Arrange atomato shaped timer, set thetimer for 25 minutes;ii. Focusfor 25 minutes. Never be inhurry to complete the task, staycalm and work out normally;iii.Reward with a 3-5 minutes break(diffuse mode);iv. After the 4th

Pomodoro reward with 15-30minutes breakv. reset thecheckmark count to zero, go tostep oneNote: If you are a 10 to 12years old or below, you maywant to start with 10 or 15minute pomodoros, you havethe freedom to choose basedon your mental focusingpower but not beyond 25minutes.The best th ing aboutPomodoro Technique is, itmakes your mind active byhelping you get regular breaks.Regular breaks recharge yourbrain and enable you torefocus more efficiently.STUDY TOOLWhat effective learn ingtechniques you use? Almosteveryone may say, I don’tknow! How do you expect tolearn effectively when youdon’t even know how to learn?Don’t be panic! Even manyteachers don’t know. Notbecause they have weaknessbut because like you they alsodidn’t learn when they were likeyou today. First you need tobe physically and mentallyprepared and then get ready forits application. The followingsteps may help you learn better:

LEARNING HOW TO LEARN: Unlocking ......THINK OF YOUR LEARNING

The PQRST method, it is anacronym forPreview, Question, Read, Summary, andTest.Preview: Have a picturewalk, look briefly at all thepictures, captions anddiagrams, and then, look atthe topic to be learned byglancing over the majorheadings or the points in thesyllabus.Q u e s t io n : F o r m u l a t equestions to be answeredfollowing a thoroughexamination of the topic(s) i)Should I study this content?ii) Why should I study? iii)What should I study?iv)How much should I study?V) How to study? On finding answers to these, you can select specific areasand you can structure yourstudy. Now prepare questionsthat you need to go in-depthto extract the idea so that youcan associate further.Read: Read through therelated material, focusing onthe information that bestrelates to the questionsformulated earlier. Highlightthe key-words, but avoid toomany.Summary: Summarize thetopic, br inging your ownunderstanding in to theprocess. This may includewritten notes, spiderdiagrams, MindMaps, flowdiagrams, labeleddiagrams, mnemonics, oreven voice recordings. If youare unable to get the properunderstanding take help frompeers or teachers.Test: Now find answers to thequestions drafted ear lier, avoid ing adding anyquestions that might distractor change the subject.ACTIVE RECALLActive recall is easy ifprogrammed well. Most of thestudent finds it critical. Thesimple step is: Look awayfrom the page and see whatyou can recall. What are thekey ideas on the page? Playthem back in your mind. Orsay them out aloud toyourself. Repeat it until youcan form a mental picture. Thishelps your neural pathwaysclearer. Tony Buzan’s fivetimes revision formula is thebest way to store yourinformation in the long termmemory. The technique is:The first review should be anhour or so after you’ve reador learnt something, forexample when you get home. The second the day after (so

take another look the next dayafter school). The third shouldbe about a week later, thefourth one month later and thefifth and final time six monthslater.EXAMINATIONExams are opportunities. Behappy to go for anexamination; enjoy the givenmoment of 1, 2 or 3 hours time.I f requently heard ofexamination blues, examination phobias, andexamination pressure.Remember you can’t performyour best and recall yourlearning if you are mentallydepressed . Such mentalpressure causes examinationphobias and that’s howexamination becomes a blues.Sleep well before you go foran examination; meditatebefore you write youranswers. If you are looking toscore better overall grades, focus on the subject you findeasy. Example: Isabel, a class10 student is bad at numbers, and so she is weak in Maths. For one whole year sheprepares to improve Maths, she even took extra tuitions. She kept st ruggling butunable to master on it. Sheends up getting 45 in Mathsout of 100. She too got stuckin al l her easy subjects,English, Science, Social, andLanguage II. She only got 55,60, 52 and 70 in her easysubjects too. Had she focus onher easy subjects and haveonly a regular review inMaths she would have scoredletter marks in all her easysubjects. The moral here issimple: Never get stuck to adifficult subject only. Putequal efforts in all your easysubjects too. Another simpletips yet a powerful tool to writeexamination: No examinationinstructions tell you to answerthe questions in order. Beginwith the question that youfully understand. Check themarks allotted for the questionand use the appropriatenumber of words based on theallotted marks. There is noharm if you have a badhandwriting but neatnessadds attraction to the examiner.Remember you can be good atyour difficult subjects withina short period of time. Dr.Barbara Oakley was bad atnumbers, Maths, but end upbecoming Professor ofEngineer ing at OaklandUniversity. All you need is ourpractical Brain training onLearning How to Learn.
