TruCluster Server – Expanding Availability
• Uptime measuring tool • CFS load balancing infrastructure
– balance the file system load across multiple nodes• CFS mount affinity
– mechanism (ie HPTC) to allow specific members to mount specific file systems (ie external NFS servers)
• Public interfaces for resource monitors – define your own low level resources
• Continuous improvement with rolling upgrade

Cluster File System
• Mount affinity via /etc/fstab– Can now specify a prefered member at mount time
• Dynamic rebalancing of CFS servers based on user defined policy
– Report generated by cfsd/var/cluster/cfs/analysis.log
– Can enable automatic relocation– Recommended to use ‘manual’ approach

CAA Performance and Scalability Enhancements
• Legacy performance– Goals: support on the order of a dozen resources with failover in 30 seconds or
less• impractical to manage more than about 20 resources• 50 resource start time: more than 10 minutes
– No feedback from the field about performance issues• Current requirements
– RAC/HA requirements are much more intense: • Support 10 – 30 services (up to 200 resources) with failover in
interactive time frames (up to 15 seconds)

CAA Performance and Scalability Enhancements
• Performance enhancements:– Locking contention reduction– New performance-optimized data repository
• Result: can manage on the order of 200 resources– Start time for 100 resources: 100 sec– Adequate RAC/HA failover performance on small
configurations• Performance work is continuing
– Improving parallelism– Reducing dependency-based interlocking

Automatic Restart of CAA Daemons
• Goal is to make sure that daemons that support high availability are themselves highly available
• Managed by Essential Services Monitor Daemon (esmd)
• esmd runs out of inittab– restarts CAA and EVM
• Can be disabled and re-enabled by sending STOP and CONT signals to esmd process:# kill –STOP <esmd’s-pid>

CAA in 5.1B: load balancing
• Manual invocation:– caa_balance <resource> …
• Can be used to manually balance the application load across the cluster
• Scheduled invocation:– REBALANCE profile attribute for scheduled balancing
• Value similar to simplified cron syntax:<day-of-the-week>:<hour>:<minute>
• When the REBALANCE attribute is specified or modified, caa_balance commands are scheduled in cluster-wide cron (implemented according to Best Practices document titled “Using cron in a TruCluster Server Cluster“)

report– Start and end of the reporting period can be specified– Command operation is based on analysis of start and stop
events in CAA event history

TruCluster V5.1B – Parallel Roll Support
•Possible to roll more than one member at a time• “No” change to roll procedure
– Order of operations
• Overlapping “clu_upgrade roll” commands– Number of nodes rolled is limited by quorum configuration– Possible to roll both with and w/o adjusting quorum– At most, 4 members can roll “simultaneously”
• Key Issue: reboot of a member cannot result in loss of quorum• “clu_upgrade undo” is still a serial administrative “event”

Disaster Tolerance
• Failover in the case of a complete site failure• Extended cluster
– Single cluster spread across a wide distance• Multi-cluster
– Multiple clusters managed as a single cluster• Failover and data integrity characteristics can vary
based on customer requirements

Product Description:Tru64 UNIX Disaster Tolerant Geoplex
• Future layered product– independently licensed line-item software
• Simplify DT system management– interact with user at high level– automate commonly performed functions– reduce potential for operator error– exploit potential for fast, reliable failover, failback
• Component of complete disaster tolerant solution– careful planning and procedure preparation, etc.

Definition of a Geoplex
• Architecture to achieve disaster tolerance via duplication
• Independent sets of:– Applications– Servers– Replicated data– Client interconnects
• Located at geographically seperated sites• Connected with IP networks

Comparison with Campus-Wide DT Cluster
• Multiple systems versus single stretched cluster• Solves problems not solved by CWDTC
– any IP network connects sites– potentially unlimited distance between sites– each site scales independently– partitioned operation for non-DT apps
• Doesn’t solve some problems solved by CWDTC– SSI management domain
• Complementary relationship

Tru64 Geoplexes Today
• Can be built using HSG80 DRM or other stuff• Tools to manage storage failover, failback• But no tools to manage sites, apps
– no functionality to detect, report site failures– no connection between storage and app avail
• start/stop, storage stacks, client networking, etc.
– nothing to reduce complexity (low level details)• clear thinking under stress
– manual operation or custom scripts/code
