Unit 4: Weather Dynamics
• This unit will focus on two terms:
1. Weather – Daily atmospheric conditions.
Example: It is raining out
2. Climate – Long term atmospheric conditions.
Example: It rains between 200400mm a year

Weather Stations
Weather stations can be large and have many people working all year.
Or they could be small and checked from great distances.
All weather stations use the same basic devices:
1. Thermometer: A device used to measure temperature.
It may use liquid (alcohol, kerosene, or mercury) or be digital.

2. Hygrometer : A device used to measure humidity.
3. Baromoter : A device used to measure the atmospheric pressure.
Bad weather is associated with falling pressure and good weather with increasing pressure.

4. Wind vane : Shows the direction of the wind.
5. Anemometer : Measures the speed of wind.
This often involves a spinning device and may be part of a complex wind vane.

6. Rain gauge : Records how much rain or snow has fallen.
This is often just a small container labeled in centimeters.
