UNFORGETTABLE DAY IN ISTMINA -
GNRC - COLOMBIA
The celebration of the first World Day of Prayer and Action for Children in Istmina made
history in November 2013 by breaking the routine of a population accustomed to
spending its days under the influence of alcohol, fights, and boredom due to a lack of
space, leisure time, and community integration.
Girls and boys of the St. Augustine sector demonstrated the core values they learned in
workshops: EMPATHY, RESPONSIBILITY, RESPECT and RECONCILIATION.
The day was characterized by movies, plays, dances, sports, prayer, entertainment and a
parade through the narrow streets of the neighborhood with children and youth playing
drums and musical instruments. These are uncommon occurrences in this area which is
often flooded by the mighty river Rio San Juan.
The celebration of World Day took place in a community threatened by violence between
families and serious problems such as hunger, child labor, child neglect, alcoholism and
disregard for the rights of young people of the neighborhood.
Thanks to the GNRC this UNFORGETTABLE DAY was possible in the remote population of
the Choco jungle.
On behalf of the children and youth in the neighborhood of San Augustine Istmina, Choco
expresses to all who made this celebration, ONE THOUSAND THANKS.
The WORLD DAY IN ISTMINA is now a part of history and gives hope to us in LEARNING TO
LIVE TOGETHER.
