UI FACULTY & STAFF GIVING CAMPAIGNVOLUNTEER KICK-OFF
The University of Iowa Center for Advancement
PHIL: THE BASICS
PHIL WAS HERE® is our philanthropy-awareness effort,
focused primarily on students
WE ARE PHIL® is our annual appeal to encourage faculty
and staff to support the UI philanthropically
PHIL is short for philanthropy
The University of Iowa Center for Advancement
WHY IS FACULTY & STAFF GIVING SO IMPORTANT
• The UI faculty and staff are among the most dedicated members of the UI community and your support encourages additional support of our mission from alumni, friends and other organizations.
• Corporations and foundations often look at levels of support from faculty and staff when weighing funding decisions.
• Because when you give, you feel an even further investment in our UI community, beyond the time and talent you’re already giving. It’s our team. It’s our enterprise.

• Talk about the impact of giving, why it’s important
• Share your stories—about giving or benefiting from philanthropy—with each other
• Emphasize engagement and team building
• Be creative!
• Form workplace committees and set goals
• Make it easy, fast, and FUN to participate
DON’T
• Single out individuals (unless they wish to share their inspiration for giving)
• Pressure someone into making a gift
• Make a gift on someone else’s behalf
• Focus on the size of gifts
