Fine Art at UEL

Fine Art at UEL is taught by practicing artists and critics, many of whom have international exhibition or publication profiles

Fine Art is housed in purpose built studios within the AVA building on the Docklands Campus.

The building was opened by Grayson Perry, who appeared as his alter-ego ‘Claire’

The teaching staff are augmented by technical associates, who are also artists in their own right.

In addition to staffing the well equipped workshops they offer one to one technical support and deliver practical workshops such as this painting workshop.

Students can apply for bursaries for international study trips

Fine Art students have made study trips worldwide including to China, Finland, France, Germany, India, Japan, Nepal, Taiwan, USA

There is a strong exhibiting culture, in addition to showing regularly in the AVA Gallery students organise their own exhibitions at venues across London

• BA Hons Fine Art• MA Fine Art• Professional Doctorate in Fine Art

BA Honours Fine Art

• Three years Full time• Or five years part time

• Students should normally have completed a foundation course, access course, or equivalent before entry.

• For students who do not fulfil this there is a four year route offering entry via Year Zero BA Extended Degree

• Selection is by portfolio

MA Fine Art

• One year full time- September to September• Or two years part time

• Students should normally have a BA in Fine Art or a related subject

• Students who have a suitable history of professional art practice may also apply

• Selection is by portfolio

• Completion of the MA in Fine Art allows direct entry into Level two of the Professional Doctorate in Fine Art

Karen Raney is a critic, writer, and editor of Engage, and teaches theory to MA and Professional Doctorate students

Professional Doctorate in Fine Art

• A unique practice based programme more suitable for many artists than a PhD.

• Final exam is a public exhibition, not a written thesis

• A strong critical but supportive dialogue is developed via regular seminars and exhibitions

• 29 artist have been awarded the DFA since 1998• Graduates occupy academic positions in universities world wide

• Normally four years full time• Normally six years part time

• Applicants who already have an MA in Fine Art may apply for direct entry into level two

Fine Art at UEL• All programmes have good studios and facilities at our

East London dockside location• All programmes are taught by practicing artists and

critics• We are located close to the gallery and studio quarter

of East London• Students regularly exhibit in London galleries, and visit

artists’ studios and exhibitions• Many graduates go on either to postgraduate study or

to develop their careers from their own studios• Others take up academic posts or establish their own

business within the creative industries
