Type PMI-B, 362 kV, up to 63 kA Power Circuit Breaker | 3
ABB has a long history of developing innovative technologies to address the changing demands of power systems. As these systems continue to evolve, switching solutions must be designed to meet present-day applications as well as anticipate the future state of the grid.
ABB is proud to offer the type 362PMI-B for extreme switching applications up through 380 kV.
The 362PMI-B offers expanded ratings beyond those specified in standards to ensure industrial grade performance for a variety of applications.
Dead Tank Circuit Breaker Type 362PMI-B
A continuously evolving power systemAs legacy power generation sources are retired, we all will depend on the availability fewer sources of electricity to support our growing demand for energy. Some sources may be hundreds of miles from the load centers, thereby necessitating the build-out of new, interconnected transmission lines to make the system function. In addition, system conditions may require adaptive reactive compensation in order to balance an otherwise unbalanced power flow. All of these challenges dictate higher expectations for the products and systems used to control they system.
The 362PMI-B was developed to address these demands. Tested for high transient recovery voltage (TRV) performance, ultimate mechanical endurance and unequalled switching capabilities, the 362PMI-B is perfect for even the toughest transmission and generation applications. We are confident that the ratings, performance and features of the 362PMI-B will provide robust performance with a low cost of ownership.
The 362PMI-B is tested to all of the latest extreme TRV standards and is perfect for applications requiring high X/R ratios. Additionally it is certified for class C2 capacitive switching, as well as class IEC M2 mechanical endurance (10,000 operations).

Single-piece interrupterOur single piece high performance puffer interrupter utilizes state-of-the-art technology that minimizes line-to-ground insulation components and allows for simplified removal and replacement.
Type PM circuit breaker familyWith over 25,000 breakers delivered to date spanning voltages up to 800 kV, the ABB type PM dead tank circuit breakers remain the most purchased brand in the industry. This is due to their low cost of ownership and strong performance, backed by industry-leading service and support.
Insulating mediumThe type PM uses SF
6 as the
insulating medium. ABB has invested in monitoring technology, manufacturing techniques, and innovative designs to reduce SF
6 gas
leaks.
ShippingThe type 362PMI-B is shipped with completely assembled pole units filled with positive SF
6 pressure.
For domestic deliveries, all components are transported to the customer on a double-drop, air ride trailer. For non-domestic deliveries, or for applications requiring higher insulation ratings, the bushings are removed and packaged for shipping.

BushingsABB offers a variety of bushing options, including silicone and porcelain insulators, to meet customer application needs and environmental conditions. ABB utilizes tapered designs where feasible to reduce the SF
6 volume and therefore
installed inventory in our customer’s fleet.
TanksSingle-piece tanks are ultrasonically cleaned, then leak tested in a vacuum sealed chamber using highly accurate helium mass spectrometer leak detection. Each tank is ASME pressure vessel tested and given a number stamp for certification.
Control cubicleABB prides itself on offering generously sized control cubicles at workable heights to vastly improve access to the equipment over its lifetime.
Bushing current transformersABB utilizes slipover bushing current transformer (BCT) designs for our dead tank product line which allow for cost effective and efficient removal or exchange without removing the bushings.

HMB 4.3 mechanismThe moving contacts of each separate pole unit are driven by a type HMB-4 spring hydraulic mechanism that is mounted at one end of each interrupter tank. Mechanical energy is stored in a column of compression disk springs and is translated hydraulically to the pole’s operating shaft. Spring charge is automatically maintained by the operation of a universal motor and hydraulic pump. Each fully integrated mechanism is self lubricating, hermetically sealed from the atmosphere and weather protected, affording excellent reliability and long term stability and is backed by an industry-best 10 year warranty.

Typical installations
The compact design is ideal for new or existing substation layouts for voltages up to 362 kV. The breaker fits within many existing footprints and can be used to quickly address the need for greater protection for minimal cost.
Those familiar with the PM line of breakers can typically install and commission the breaker within 2 days given a prepared foundation. The pole units are installed on the frame, and the mechanisms are installed using simple couplings and pre-wired industrial plug connections.
The type 362PMI-B does not require any external capacitors up to the maximum rated fault current of 63kA, saving cost, installation time, and further substation space
The type PMI-B is available for capacitor and reactor switching with point-on-synchronous control.
ABB offers supervision, installation, commissioning, and maintenance service on all type PM breakers.
