ATTEMPTED KIDNAP: GRADE 3 LEARNER KEEPS HER COOL
Stranger danger!ESMÉ ERASMUS
@erasmusesme
AGrade 3 pupil of Kenridge PrimarySchoolwas almost kidnapped this pastFriday while she was waiting for her
mother to fetch her from school. This came amidst several hoax reports on
social media of attempted child kidnappingsat various schools around the Boland andnorthern suburbs recently. In one of thesehoax reports a Toyota Quantum minibuswas reported as suspicious, but turned outto be agents of Ozone Aqua selling their
products. But this time, it really happened.According to the principal, Sandy Smith,
the child was standing near the Koos Ek-steen hockey field at the stop street on thecorner of Van Riebeeck Avenue and RhodesStreet at about 13:15.A white kombi-type vehicle with a man
and a woman inside stopped next to the girland they told her that her mother had askedthem to fetch her from school. The girl turned around and ran back into
the school grounds, Smith said. The mothercame to fetch her child and they reported the
incident to the police and the CNi armed re-sponse, but did not lay a charge.Captain Marchell Rhode, media spokes-
person of the Durbanville police, confirmedthe incident was reported to the head of sec-tor 3 of the Durbanville police. However, hesaid that it was reported to the police thatthe vehicle in question was a white bakkie.According to Rhode the sector head said
they have been doing regular patrols at theschool since the incident.“We’ve put out a message to our parents
to collect their children on time after school. We have also instructed our children towait
for their parents inside the school groundsand have teachers standing in our car parkat home time to ensure the learners’ safety,”said Smith.CNi armed response is also patrolling the
entrances to the school at both sides whenthe school comes out – in Tygervalley Roadand Van Riebeeck Road, says StephenSwartz, manager of the response unit of CNiarmed response.According tohim they are also on the look-
out for suspicious vehicles or people in thevicinity of the school.

Taxi drivers whowere using HavengaStreet in Upper Oakdale on Wednes-day 8 June got the surprise of their
lives when the traffic department held an-other taxi blitz in Bellville.Nine taxis were impounded for being
off-route, seven for not being roadworthyand 25 fines were issued for other offen-ces.Over the past year residents of Upper
Oakdale have been complaining non-stopabout taxis taking a short-cut throughHa-venga Street during peakhours from16:45to 17:45 on week days to avoid the heavytraffic on Durban Road.“Our first complaint as residents was
lodged in September last year. We wroteto Brendan van der Merwe, councillor ofward 3, and he referred our letter to theCity of Cape Town,” says Johan Burger, chairman of the Upper Oakdale Neigh-bourhood Watch. The City resurfaced Havenga Street as
part of their regular maintenance sched-ule last year and as part of this exercise
also incorporated the instalment of twospeed bumps along this route.“They hoped that this would further de-
ter speeding and the rat running of taxisand other vehicles that use this parallelroute as a way of avoiding traffic backupsalong the Durban Road corridor in the di-rection of the N1 and the Bellville CBD,”says Burger.“Before the speedbumpswere installed,
taxis bypassed the traffic down HavengaStreet between Bloemhof and Mispelroads trying to avoid the heavy traffic inDurban Road. It became a dangerous situ-ation as the taxis just sped down the on-coming (right hand) side of the road downtoMispel Road and pushed theirway backin on the corner of Mispel Road and Ha-venga Street.“This is a dangerous and blind corner
as it is and traffic fromDurban Road havethe right of way turning into HavengaStreet,” says Burger.“In the past I’ve witnessed many a taxi
overtaking the queue of cars at highspeed. Like the residents of Upper Oak-dale I am also happy that something was
done,” he says.Van der Merwe says the complaint re-
garding taxis being off-route is a regularone through many areas in Bellville andthe City of Cape Town as a whole.“These drivers are usually chasing
profit and income and as a result are igno-rant to the rules of the road. In most casesthey really just don’t care about whattheir route permits say when they are ina hurry to make the maximum possibleprofit in a day.“This leads to the rat running that we
experience along the parallel routes to themain roads like Durban Road, Old PaarlRoad and other routes that are congestedduring peak times,” he says.He adds the traffic department is trying
its best to be at thesehot spots duringpeakhours. On Tuesday 7 June a similar operation
was held onMeerlust, Salford,Hadley andMidmar streets and seven taxis were im-pounded for operating in contravention totheir permit. Four others were suspendedfor being non-roadworthy and 18 fineswere issued for other offences.

vraag ondersoek gaan instel.
straat tussenFairtreesweg enDurbanwegop1 Junie herstel.

In another real incident two girls also es-caped kidnapping at the Rusthof PrimarySchool in Strand last Wednesday.Deputy principal Ikraam Wentzel con-
firmed the ten-year-old Grade 5 girls wereapproached by an elderly woman with longblonde hair, dressed in black, and a man ina blue bakkie. The woman tried to force thegirls into the bakkie, but they managed tobreak free and ran back into the schoolgrounds.
This came amidst several alleged false re-ports of attempts to snatch children or peo-ple taking photographs of children atschools and elsewhere. The rumours of children being targeted at
schools in the northern suburbs as well asin Franschhoek, Strand, SomersetWest andPaarl started making the rounds a fewmonths ago on WhatsApp and Facebook.A photograph of a Toyota Quantummini-

of the suspect vehicles of a kidnapping syn-dicate.However, it turnedout tobeavehiclebelonging to Aqua Ozone out on businessselling their products from door to door.Shadley Abrahams, director of Aqua
Ozone, was quoted on Facebook saying eversince the picture was shared, his staff havebeen harassed by the police and the public.Durbanville police warned that people
must make sure of their facts before theypost or distribute alerts on social media.

Jip de Jager Drive in Bellville is due tobe resurfaced, andwith the project com-mencing next week, motorists should
expect some delays due to the closure oflanes. The resurfacing, set to cost approximate-
ly R4million, should be completed by Tues-day 5 July if all goes as planned.
Limited lifespan“Roads have a limited lifespan. Given the
huge investment that is required for build-ing new infrastructure, we undertake regu-lar maintenance to prolong the longevity ofthe city’s road network. As such, the road-works along Jip de Jager Drive involve themaintenance of the existing road base, re-surfacing, and ancillary works to preventfurther deterioration and potholes,” saysthe City’s Mayco member for transport,Brett Herron. Some lanes in Jip de Jager Drive will be
closed to traffic for the duration of the road-works. However, one lane in each direction
will remain open at all times.“The closure of the lanes will enable us
to expedite the roadworks so that motoristsare inconvenienced for a shorter time,” saysHerron.“Even though the progress depends as
muchon theweather as onotherunforeseencircumstances, we are confident that theworks will be completed within threeweeks,” says Herron.
Longer travelling timeThe closure of some of the laneswill affect
traffic in both directions along Jip de JagerDrive and some roads in the area.“I request road users to please make pro-
vision for longer travelling times during thenext three weeks and to be patient. Oncecompleted, we will all benefit from the newsmoother road surface and improved driv-ing conditions,” says Herron.V Road users are advised to contact the TransportInformation Centre for more information on 080065 64 63 or to follow @Transport4CT on Twitter.

What if TygerBurger weren’t a news-paper, but a broadcasting agency?
What if you weren’t bound to lis-ten to hyper local news impacting on thesuburb you live in, but rather the northernsuburbs as a whole?
Would this then contradict what Tyger-Burger stands for?
Followers of the newspaper on Facebookwould have noticed a new feature – a weeklywrap-up video – posted every Tuesday.
In this short video some of the articlesthat appear in the newspaper are highlight-ed, giving you the biggest weekly news fromthe northern suburbs in bite-sized chunks.
Some broadcasters bring you globalnews, some focus on a particular city, butno-one targets a relatively small area suchas the northern suburbs.
This means, of course, that the newspapercontinues to set the bar of hyper local con-tent across all mediums.
One of WP Media’s journalists, BrendenRuiter, asked himself how one can spreadthe news in a digital world, and make it aseasy as possible for Facebook users to stayup to date.
“The answer was simple,” he says.“Why not a weekly news bulletin? We
started a month or two ago and the populari-ty of the videos is for all to see. It’s still awork in progress, of course, with finer de-tails still being ironed out.”
A couple of minutes a week to stay up todate with news headlines? The viewer’sconvenience is clearly the catch phrase.
Another imminent adoption will be roll-ing text, which will mean one can watch thevideo with no sound if necessary.
In essence, it is a news broadcast with avery brief description of the chosen articles.
If one snippet piques your interest, youcan read more about it on the newspaper’sfree website under the Netwerk24 domain. All you need to do is type tygerburger.co.zainto the URL bar of your browser.
The same concept has also been embracedby the southern suburbs’ People’sPost, so in just six minutes you canget a community newspaper’s per-spective of happenings in the wholeof Cape Town.People’s Post journalist and bulle-
tin presenter Samantha Lee saysthe additional challenge has beenan exciting venture thus far.
“This venture helps us satisfy thenews needs of those on the moveand assists our journalists in tell-ing the inspiring stories of othersthat may not have made it into thereaders’ relevant editions.”V Find TygerBurger on Facebook and lookout for “Die Week in...” on Tuesday at 17:00.

Lego hones future engineersAVRIL FILLIES
Young Engineers in Bell-ville is inviting children, their fathers and grandfa-
thers to spendFather’sDay thisSunday building a motorisedmodel out of Lego together.According toCraigAnderson
of Young Engineers they pro-vide theoretical knowledge andpractical implementation inscience, technology, engineer-ing and mathematics (STEM)using Lego.“We run relevant pro-
grammesona regularbasis andfor the Father’s Day pro-gramme we encourage teams(up to three people) to sign upand join the fun on the day. Ourholiday programmes run overthe school holidays and we runtwo sessions a day from 09:00 to11:00 and 14:00 to 16:00.“The winter holiday pro-
grammewill be held during thefirst and last week of the Julyholidays in Bellville. We oper-ate in Bellville, Kuils River andKraaifontein,” says Anderson. He runs extramural pro-
grammes at Eversdal PrimarySchool and La Vigne Educa-tional House as well as at hislearning centre in Ridgeworth.“The educational goals are achieved by
using Lego and K’nex assembly kitsuniquely designed by our staff, demon-strating the scientific principles in a funand accessible fashion.
“The staff combines experiments thatform scientific intuition with stories thatcapture the imagination.“We offer extramural classes in the after-
noons and paid for by the parents for onelesson per week. We offer schools the ser-
vice of building the Young Engineers pro-gramme into their curriculum to formpartof their technology subject, but costs varyaccording to the school’s needs and the ser-vice required,” says Anderson.“Each lesson at the school comprises a
theory portion and we providethe children with custom de-signed kits. The kits contain spe-cific Lego pieces, motors, batterypacks and a build sheet which en-able the children to build a work-ing motorised model like a Legowashing machine.“The children then are able to
see how the theoretical concept isbrought to life. For example – wesoak cotton wool in water andplace it in the washing machine. When it spins, the water flies outof the model. Once the project iscompleted we recap the conceptsdiscussed in the lesson and en-courage the children to either en-hance their models by addingmore Lego pieces or enable themto break their model down andfree build to express their creativ-ity,” he says. The concepts that Young Engi-
neers teach are repeated in cer-tainmodules throughout the yearto remind the learners of whatthey have learned and reinforcethe concept to ensure a sound un-derstandingat the endof theyear. He added that the focus at
Young Engineers is on the futuregenerations of engineers and sci-entists.“We always seek to offer every
child the opportunity and confidence to en-ter a challengingworld by providing an en-couraging, hands-on environment for de-veloping the necessary skill set.”V Phone Craig on 021 910 0796 or 082 976 6000for more information

Ranting overrising rentalratesAt the start of July my 22-month-old babyboy will be living in his third home –poor kid.It has gotten so bad that his first
coherent sentence might very well be“Pack it in a box”.Quite astonishingly, I have moved 23
times in 17 years. Suffice to say, I knowwhat I’m talking about when it comes torental prices. It has also struck me how little home
owners know about the price of renting adecent place in Cape Town. All they are concerned about is wheth-
er they will be paying a little more or alittle less next month due to the interestrate. As rental tenants we face an industry
standard annual price hike of 10%!Every year we are 10% poorer! Add
half a cup of Eskom and a spoonful ofinflation and you have a baked monstros-ity that chips teeth.
In just sevenyears from nowone can expect topay double onepays now!A shoestring
budget can only becut so much. Soonthere will be noshoestring left!Agents and
owners who rentout their propertieshave no problemgetting tenantsbecause of thegreat migration
from the rest of the country to CapeTown.Someone ought to tell Gautengers
perhaps they are better off in the north.I compared renting prices from Gaut-
eng and Cape Town this week. I fullyexpected to see a similarity in what youcan get for R10 000 a month. With that money I can rent a nice
townhouse with an impressive garden inone of the best security complexes inPretoria. In Cape Town I have seensmaller townhouses with smaller gardensin Kraaifontein go for R10 000.I love Cape Town, but something
drastically needs to happen to curbrenting prices, which are quite obviouslycompletely out of control. The only way to keep head above water
seems to buy property. The other day I went into a book store
and saw one in the self-help section aboutempowering a middle income householdto buy a house in South Africa.I paged through it in disbelief and
returned it to where it belongs – thefiction section. – Rent-a-lot

I wonder if Ilse Haas is not abit too harsh in her descriptionof the terrible Capetonians(“Cape Town and its ‘clicky’circles”, TB, 8 June). The truthis that in most cities peopleare busy and have their owncircles; it is not just a CapeTown thing. But I wonder how far her
own ideas actually make itworse? There are ways tomake friends. My daughter andfamily relocated to Australia afew years ago, landed in asmall town with no otherSouth Africans, and by beingactive and helpful at school, joining a local church, invitingpeople over for a braai andjust being friendly and outgo-ing, they have more friendsthan they can handle now.I myself arrived here in the
Cape 23 years ago and had tohear from the Pretoria crowdhow distant the Capetonianswere. Within a few months Ihad a few good friends and Istill wait to meet these horri-ble Capetonians (they arethere, but they should not beyour norm).

Being a drug addict has been likened towearing a mask.At first you find the seemingly self-
confident person looking back at you in themirror intriguing, but before too long youcannot even recall the real you.You become the mask, and without it you
feel incomplete.Every now and again a drug addict will ex-
perience a moment of clarity and yearn to befree. But this is the exception
rather than the rule.According to Ramot’s
manager, Lettie Visser, thevast majority of patientswho walk through theirdoors are there because ofsomeone else.“More often than not a
loved one or an employerdemands that the patientcomes for treatment. It israre that patients realisethemselves that their ad-diction actually hurtsthose closest to them themost.”With Drug Awareness Week from 24 to 28
June just around the corner, TygerBurgerspoke to one of the rehabilitation centres op-erating in the northern suburbs.RamotTreatmentCentre for SubstanceDe-
pendence in Parow was established in 1964by theDutchReformedChurch and has sinceguided thousands of addicts from all overSouth Africa to a full recovery.By far the two most common addictions
they treat are alcohol and tik dependence.Every week on a Tuesday and Thursday
people from all walks of life are admitted andsubjected to an intense and professionallymanaged rehabilitation programme, consist-ing of one week of detox and four weeks ofstructured in-patient programmes. Some try to escape, some try to coerce a
friend into smuggling drugs onto the premis-es and others try to fill the void with overeat-
ing.Ultimately, all of the patients will be com-
pletely drug-free by the time they are dis-charged.“At Ramot, once patients are out of detox,
they don’t just lie in bed. We have many pro-grammes designed to assist them in their re-covery. We provide structure, a good diet, acreative workshop and a gym, to name buta few benefits,” says Visser. She continues: “We are rather unique in
the fact that we don’t have former addicts onthepayroll, but ratherprofessional, qualified
and registered staff. We do,however, makeuse of ex-ad-dict volunteers. Besidesourmedical staff we rely onthe therapeutic services ofa psychologist, a biokineti-cist, social workers, ateacher and a spiritualcounsellor.”The enormous drug prob-
lem facing the WesternCape receives plenty of cov-erage, but according toVisser some of the drug ad-dictions are underplayed.“We see the ugly side of
dagga addiction. It blocksthe normal cognitive and emotional develop-ment of adolescents. We have had patientshere in their thirties with the mental andemotional capacity of teenagers. Their senseof responsibility is so far removed from reali-ty that it seemsalmost a lost cause. Somemayeven become psychotic with regular use,”she elaborates. As with all organisations of Ramot’s ilk,
sufficient funds will always be an issue.“The money we receive from the govern-
ment, medical aids and private funding isnever enough. We have been trying to buynew mattresses for years now. So donationsfrom the public are invaluable and serves anincredibly great cause. Anyonewhowants toshow their support to us they can go to ourwebsite, www.ramot.co.za,” concludesVisser.V Read next week’s TygerBurger to hear the storiesof an addict and an ex-addict.

Healing the hood by taking actionLOUISA STEYL
@lousteyl
He’s a community activist, an educator,a father, a husband and a hip-hop art-ist.
Emile YX? – or Emile Jansen as his familyknowshim– isno stranger toCapeTownandSouth African hip-hop fans. In fact, theBlack Noise founding member has been in-strumental in growing the local hip-hopscene, but hismany achievementswill be in-troduced to an international audience laterthis year whenBreak like You, a documenta-ry about his work, will be screened at the in-augural New York Hip-hop Film Festival.“Thedocumentary producers interviewed
various people and heard about my storyfrom someone and they just approached meabout telling my story,” Emile explains ofthe short film shot by Mehreen Afzal andMelissa House as part of the Barefoot Work-shops last year.“It’s a very honest story about being a
community activist, father, husband, artistand educator through arts and culture andhow healing can happen through giving ofoneself.”The film comes off the back of a busy
period for Emile who recently won theSABC 3 breakfast show Espresso’s MandelaMonday Award along with a LeadSA HeroAward in April. He’s also just sent five dancers to compete
at Battle VNR in France and wrapped upPositive Poster Week, a campaign runthrough his Heal the Hood project.Emile started Heal the Hood as a commu-
nity organisation in 1998 with the aim to
“change minds to change action”.The organisation’s focus this year is on
eight schools and two community centres ontheCapeFlatswhere they inspireyoungpeo-ple to become “artistically active” throughsongs, music videos and book.“We are also focussing our energies on
changing the negative dialogue that domi-nates the Cape Flats youth to a positive oneof outcomes and action.”Emile’s own artistic journey started with
break-dancing or a B-boy, before he went onto try his hand at graffiti, beat-boxing andrapping – all elements of hip-hop culture.Dancing is what first attracted him to theculture and he says it challenged his fear ofpeople seeing him“in themiddle of a circle”.“Without knowing it, it was aboutme find-
ing me and showing myself to the world.”As a man of few words, he says he knew
he had to do something about it. This is aphilosophy that he’s carried throughout hiscareer andwhy he now calls himself a “reac-tionary activist”.“Wedidnothave a space, sowe tookaction
and danced on the streets,” he says, adding:“We took action to teach each other our-selves, and that’s activism.”When Emile and his crew found them-
selveswith no events to performat, they cre-ated their own, before creating competitionand then touring – first nationally and theninternationally. With no “how-to” guide, theyprinted their ownCDs,DVDsandbooksand created their own production to be ableto make a living from their art. It was thebeginning of what would become a vibrantSouth African hip-hop culture.“We are proud to say that we played a role
inmaking that dreama reality formanypeo-ple today.Mymain reasonwas always aboutmy creative desire to make new things, tomanifest the word and show youth that withdetermination and perseverance anythingis possible.”Emile’s contributions to his community
have been highlighted most recentlythrough his Mandela Monday Hero awardand LeadSA award, but last year hewas alsochosen as the face of theMoshitoMusic Con-
ferencewherehewasawarded forhis contri-bution to hip-hop. The year before he wonanhonoraryawardat theSouthAfricanHip-hop Awards. His work is about more than awards
though. “As a citizen, it is my duty to takeaction on civic issues,” the activist explains. For Emile, this means leading by example
and not “just talking about change, but tak-ing action to make it real”.The action taker will soon be heading to
America to seehis sonandwifewhoarewithher family in Ohio, before heading to theNew York hip-hop Film Festival. He’ll beback inCapeTown inmid-August to host theCape Flats Film Festival before going intostudio to work on his ninth solo album. Alsoon his agenda for the rest of the year are hisfirst DVD compilationmade up ofmusic vid-eos and a book about Black Noise and hip-hop in Cape Town. He’s also considering adoctorate in Education and Hip-hop Pedago-gy at an international university.Emile will participate in a Q&A session
after the screening ofBreak like You andwillbe using the opportunity to invite interna-tional filmmakers to participate in the Healthe Hood project and the Cape Flats Hip-hopFilm Festival scheduled for December. He’s also assisting Break like You produc-
ers Mehreen Afzal and Melissa House withfundraising for New York and to turn thedocumentary into a full-length feature.Fans can catch Emile in action when he
performs on SABC 3’s Jam Sandwich onThursday 14 July.V Anybody interested in helping with Emile’sfundraising efforts can contact him at [email protected] or 082 395 8125

SouthAfricansknowhimasTannieEvi-ta and Bambi Kellerman, but thesecharacters will take a back seat when
Pieter-Dirk Uys presents his autobiographi-cal one-manmemoir The Echo of a Noise (Pi-eter-Dirk Uys – unpowdered at last!).In his new show at Theatre on the Bay,
Pieter-Dirk, who celebrates his seventiethbirthday this year, plans to take audienceson a candid journey, from his childhood tohis first experiences of apartheid and hissuccessful career.“It’s the story of a life well lived,” says Pi-
eter-Dirk Uys, adding: “About a boy fromPinelands who grew up in a fractured socie-ty blessed with parents who brought musicand love into the family; a boy who wasstricken by the disease to please froman ear-ly age, overshadowed by church and schooland a very strict father, yet finding inspira-tion and excitement through his fantasiesand imagination.”He says the show covers topics that would
have been shared by most of the audience:“father, mother, sister, cat, swopping com-ics, seeingmovies,Mozart, Elvis, somethingcalled sex, something named death, some-thing remembered as love, laughter andmaybe a tear.”Pieter-Dirk refers to these as “the familiar
noises of life that eventually create a sym-phony of celebration”.
7000 performances in seven decadesDespite more than 7000 performances, the
SouthAfrican theatre legend sayshe’s neverhad the courage to remove the masks of thecharacters he’s created, mainly to focus on“political madness and mirth”.“This is the first time I tell the story be-
hind the stories.Maybe turning 70 has givenme the thumbs-up to share the secrets and
let the cat out of the bag.”Pieter-Dirk started his career in 1968
when there were many limitations on whatperformers could get away with. He’s jokedabout the infamous censor board of the time, calling them his own public relations de-partment. In fact, at one point they even de-clared one of his made-up words “obscene”.“I think the restrictions I was faced with
helpedme create possibilities of confrontingthem through unexplored avenues – in mycase, using humour as a weapon ofmass dis-traction.”Pieter-Dirk believed that to laugh would
help make “fear less fearful”, especially in
a time when the lives of many South Afri-cans were shaped by fear. His answer wasto create his iconic character Evita Bezuid-enhout. “Laughterwas a relief. It still is, andEvita was just one of those characters whoeventually stepped out of the satirical clus-ter and became themost famouswhite wom-an in South Africa – then and now.”
Performer, activistThis year is a big one for Pieter-Dirk who
is also the subject of a soon to be releaseddocumentary Nobody’s Died Laughing (incinemas from Friday 29 July) which cele-brates his life as a performer, as well as anactivist. The film tries to keep up with Pieter-Dirk,
who the production team call one of SouthAfrica’s busiest performers, while also tak-ing a closer look at theman behind the char-actershepresents alongwithhishumanitar-ian work. “This film captures a man and alifetime commitment to a country by usingsatire to affect change”, explains filmmakerWillem Oelofsen.“I’ve been doing what I do since 1968 – it
is a full-time commitment, and because it isalways reinventing itself, theatre keeps meon my toes and living in the moment,” saysPieter-Dirk.“The great library of stories that have
been shared fromthe stagehasdone somuchto allow us in the audience to confront thedrama of life, of relationships, of pain, of tur-moil and strife, and of course, the release oftensions through laughter, either via come-dy or humour,” Pieter-Dirk says.“Politics has today become pure theatre,
but I would rather stick to the stage than bebrained in Parliament by a flying red hard-hat!”V The Echo of a Noise (Pieter-Dirk Uys – unpowderedat last!) will be on stage at Theatre on the Bay Tues-days to Saturdays until Saturday 18 June. Tickets costbetween R100 and R160 from Computicket.

His face beams with pride as the foursingers surrounding him practice anumber for their upcoming Father’s
Day concert. The local theatre legend Alvon Collison is
seated inhisMilnertonhomewherehiswallsare lined with the faces of the all the enter-tainers he’s helped along his ownmusic jour-ney – a career spanning five decades.Affectionately known by many Capetoni-
ans as “Mr Showbiz”, Alvon was recentlyhonoured with a Naledi Lifetime Achieve-mentAward for his contribution to the SouthAfrican entertainment industry.“To win that award was wonderful; it was
absolutely stunning for me, because Ithought I was a forgotten man.”Alvon spent a large portion of his career
in Johannesburg where he won a GalloAward and Three Leaf Award (now calledFleur du Cap Theatre Awards) for his break-out role as the Pharoh in Joseph and theAmazing Technicolour Dreamcoat- a role heplayed inmore than 3000 performances of theproduction. The now 75-year-old returned to Cape
Town at the age of 42. “Then I built a wholenew career here.” Alvon admits to workingveryhard, hiringhalls and settinguphis ownshows. “I had to believe in myself that thiswas all going to come together and slowly butsurely this became a way of life for me.”His Cape Town chapter turned out to be as
illustrious as Johannesburg with Alvon re-ceiving Civic Honours from the City of CapeTown. His regular shows, like his upcomingFather’s Day celebration and his annual freeSpirit of Christmas concert, which he’s host-ed at Cape Town City Hall for the last 15years, have become staples of the Cape Townentertainment calendar. Perhaps his biggestcontribution to the industry, though, is all
the talented performers he’s nurtured alongthe way.Walking through his home, Faried Swartz,
one of these performers, points to photos onAlvon’s walls, listing names and achieve-ments of all the stars Alvon hasworkedwith. In his Spirit of Christmas concert alone,
he’s worked with about 50 children eachyear. “I’ve watched little people who playedJesus who are now playing Joseph.”Then there are singers like Lana English
who stared in Phantom of the Opera. “Lana’smy girl,” he says, adding the names of per-formers nowworking in theUnitedKingdomand Spain.“They’re all my kids who I’ve tried to help.
They’re all an extension of me and the linkhas never been broken.”Renee Osborne, who will be singing in his
Father’s Day show, adds a lot of people cometo Alvon’s door.“And he just opens more doors for them,”
says Osborne.Working with young people is something
that runs in the family. Alvon’s grandmoth-er, a school teacher, was the well-respectedChristine Revell, after whom the ChristineRevell Children’sHome inAthlone is named.“She was the one who inspired me to do
what I’m doing,” Alvon exclaims. “She tookme to a concert at City Hall and I fell in lovewith the stage,” he recalls fondly. “I thought:‘I want to be here one day,’ and now I am.”After half a century on stage, Alvon says
he’s been truly blessed to be able to keep do-ing what he loves.“I love my life,” he says proudly.
V Alvon will be presenting his Father’s Day concertwith Renee Osborne, Shannon Lewis, Janine Pick, Far-ied Swartz and guest Sophia Foster at the Wood-bridge Primary School Hall in Milnerton on Sunday(19 June) from 15:00 to 18:00, where guests can ex-pect an afternoon of humorous anecdotes and music.Tickets for the show cost R100 and include tea, cof-fee, koeksisters and snacks. My lewewas opgemors. Die naam,Healer Josha, beteken blydskap in my lewe.
BOWLS: NOT A GAME OF OLD MAN’S MARBLES
Huge driveto get theball rolling

Western Province and Bowls SouthAfrica are going full tilt at gettingschools involved with their youth
development lawn bowls programme.“Let’s get the ball rolling” is amassive ef-
fort to revive the sport specifically target-ing our youth for the future in the sport ofbowls,” says Glenda Pontes from the Good-wood Bowling Club, who is also involvedwith the Western Province Bowls StandingCommittee Development and is the drivingforce behind the initiative.Trevor Davis, executive member of
Bowls SA, Anina Black, member of the na-tional standing committee membershipand marketing, and Leon Venter, convenerof the Western Province standing commit-tee development, are just some of the peoplethat have offered to assist and give advice.“Goodwood Bowling Club, like so many
other bowling clubs in the country, hasseen a decline in membership, mostly dueto older members passing away. The clubhas been in existence since 1963 and has agood track recordwithmanyadistrict play-er, and is a strong role player in WesternProvince,” says Pontes.“We have decided that we do not want to
be one of the clubs to close our doors andhave set out on a road to revive the club andgrow the number of members,” she boasts. The Goodwood Bowling Club announced
that 22-year-old Protea player Anneke Sny-man has come on board to be the face of thecampaign.
Anneke, a Bredasdorp and Boland playerresiding in Cape Town, is a dual memberat the Goodwood Bowling Club. She is pas-sionate about bowls and keen to see bowlsbeing taken to the townships andmore chil-dren playing the game.
In order for this venture to be a success, schools must buy into the idea and help in-troduce the game of bowls to their learners. That is where the next generation of cham-pions will come from, and that is the pointof this whole exercise.
It’s been saidmany times over that bowlsmust get rid of thedreadful tag of “oldman’smarbles”. For this to happen the messagethat bowls is fun, exciting and the sport forall ages must get out.
Tomorrow (Thursday 16 June), the Good-wood Bowling Club and some of the WPbowling clubs, will host a fun filled dayfrom 09:00 to create some hype around thesport. “It is also inspiring to see AldermanClive Justus, MP James Vos, ward council-lor Cecile Janse van Rensburg and past dis-trict governor Maisie Fisher welcome themove,” says Pontes.V Anyone who would like to get involved and playon the Youth Day at Goodwood can contact GlendaPontes 082 371 2940 and for further informationvisit www.bowlssa.co.za or www.facebook.com/BowlsSouthAfrica
