Hough.
Dertig jaar predikantHywasvirdertig jaardie gemeente sepre-
der.
Jan NiederHeitmann.

Residents of Kanonberg Lifestyle Es-tate have until Wednesday 18 May toregister and comment on any aspect
related to the proposed single residentialdevelopment adjacent to Kanonberg Lifes-tyle Estate.Combined Developers proposes to devel-
op farm 11646, remainder farm 34751 and erf37636, Bellville, located to the north west ofthe existingKanonbergLifestyleEstate andOude Westhof Residential area respective-ly.Farm 11646 and remainder 34751 are lo-
cated outside of the City of Cape Town’s ur-ban edge and are zoned as Single Residen-tial 1.Erf 37636 will most likely serve as the ac-
cess to the development in future. It is pro-posed to develop a portion of the consolidat-ed site totalling 2.7 ha into 22 single residen-tial units. The proposed residences will beallowed double-storey properties and nothree-storey developments will be allowed. The position of the erven have been se-
lected so as tominimise the impact on natu-ral vegetation as well as minimise possiblevisual impacts on higher slopes. At this stage it is deemed that the develop-
mentwill be a private developmentwith theresidents forming their own property own-ers’ association. One existing single residential unit is lo-
cated on farm 11646, belonging to PieterEbersohn. The farm has a dam and twosmall drainage lines on the property. Fur-thermore a small nursery and a tenniscourt is located on the property. The rest of
the site is covered in pine tree plantationsand natural Swartland Shale Renosterveldvegetation. Although the three erven form-ing part of the development are ratherlarge, only a small section of the consolidat-ed site is proposed for development. The site supports two habitat types that
include thicket dominated by wild olive(which is associated with the two drainagelines), and pine forest with sparse to densecover of natural vegetation beneath.Access is currently proposed via the
small panhandle along remainder farm34751, although this has not yet been dis-cussed with the authorities. It is, however, expected that this might
change in order to obtain access via erf37636 located at 11 Chadonnay, Oude West-hof, asEbersohnowns this property aswell. All bulk services are readily available in
the area and will be supplied by the City ofCape Town.Genec was appointed as the independent

Motorbike collisions are a concern espe-cially after an accident on Friday when amotorcyclist, believed to be in his fifties, was killed at the intersection of Carl Cronjeand Frans Conradie drives in Bellville.According to Major Fienie Nimb, spokes-

paramedics on the scene, they were unableto revive the man. He was later declareddead on the scene. The truck driver was not injured in the
incident. He was later transported from the
scene to receive counselling. The exact cause of the collisionwill be in-

verlede jaar – hoofsaaklik jong duiwe. Ookhaarbuurmanhet sovier of vyf dooie duiwegevind.

Restauranteienaar kry ‘bloedneus’ in hofESMÉ ERASMUS
@erasmusesme
Dié uitspraak bring talle besprekings virtroues en ander byeenkomste in gedrang, waarvan sommige so lankgelede as 19maan-de gelede gedoen is.

“They don’t have much, butthey still have a body thatcan do amazing things.”
This is one of the key lessonsHanne La Cour says the ActionAr-te Foundation tries to teach thechildren they work with.
The organisation has been usingcircus performance skills to helpempower young people, especiallyin the Hanover Park community, and non-circus folk will get aglimpse of their non- traditionalacts when the foundation’s coregroup performs at Trash Cabaret’sCarnival of Dreams at HillcrestQuarry on Saturday 14 May.
The foundation was started byHanne, who is originally from Den-mark, and Marlin Roos, a secondgeneration circus performer whohas been training since the age ofseven.
Hanne says Marlin has alwaysbeen interested in learning, teach-ing and giving back to the commu-nity of Hanover Park through freeclasses. She, on the other hand, comes from a background of thea-tre and social projects and whenthe two met, they decided to com-bine their skills.
“I was fascinated by the circus,”Hanne says, so she started to trainand travelled with Marlin to Spainwhere they spent two years learn-ing how to use circus training asa teaching method. They started of-fering workshops soon after re-turning in January 2014. “Livingin Hanover Park is hard.”
Hanne highlights issues like
gang violence and lack of involve-ment from parents and says Ac-tionArte connects with children bykeeping them off the streets, in-spiring them to be creative andteaching them about the impor-tance of education. By teachingchildren what their bodies are ca-pable of, they also instil a sense ofpositivity and teach children thatthey can choose a better life.
The foundation’s teachers use
juggling, for example, to teach chil-dren concentration and reason.“To keep the balls in the air youhave to want it and have to find therhythm and coordination.” Theyalso use the juggling to teach littleones mathematics. While theydon’t go into the full mathematicaltheory behind the art, they do useit to teach things like times tables.
Children who “can’t sit still” areencouraged to train in acrobatics
to use their energy positively. The foundation’s core group is
made up of performers from thecommunity who have been trainedas teachers and professional per-formers. Besides training theyouth and professional classes foranyone interested in becoming acircus performer or get fit, they al-so perform regularly, often at cor-porate events, to keep the founda-tion running and expanding.
ActionArte also raises funds andreaches out to the communitythrough their Sunday Funday aft-ernoons at their base in Eppingwhere families are invited to ex-plore their circus world.
Hanne will be one of the artistsperforming at Trash Cabaret’s Car-nival of Dreams on Saturdaywhere she’ll be performing her spe-ciality: hanging by her hair.
The multi-cultural cabaret eventwill bring together burlesque danc-ers, acrobats, jugglers, aerial art-ists, roaming characters, fire danc-ers and musicians in a festival toignite imaginations.
Participating groups will in-clude Psychedelic Theatre, SkyDance Studio, Leo Letsape akaMr.Letsparty, Cami Scoundrel andBlack Orchid Burlesque who’ll beled by their ringmaster, RiaanSmit from Crimson House againsta soundtrack provided by acts likeAnn Jangle, Crimson House, theTrash Cabaret Band and the Mzan-zi Marching band
Gates open at 16:00 and festivalgoers are invited to come dressedup as a character from theirdreams and play from 18:00 beforethe main show starts at 20:00. Three days ofpaternityleave a joke!I’ve had bags under my eyes for so longthat I named them. It’s no coincidence that they’re named
after my two toddlers – Joshua andAmélie.I’m writing this from the perspective of
a very involved and very tired fatherwho gets just as little sleep as his wife. This weekend I went to a well-known
shopping centre in the northern suburbswith my kids and were met by a veryadamant and somewhat sarcastic securityguard. While I was unloading screaming child
number one, the guard marched towardsme and indicated that I was not allowedto park there. He furiously pointedtowards the sign reading “Moms & Tots”.The guard reasoned that I was clearly
not a mom, despite the exaggerated bagsunder my eyes hanging so low that Ineeded a bra.I refused to move the car and flatly
ignored the man.Yet, he had a point!I’m not a mom. Sowhy on earth arethere no “Dads &Tots” parkingspaces?Little did I know
my day was aboutto go from bad toworse.Screaming child
number two had adirty nappy andmuch to mydismay I discov-ered that the baby
changing area was located in the wom-en’s rest rooms. These two issues are more than just a
personal gripe. It affects every single dad, and even
more so every single single dad!As if us poor souls don’t have enough
on our plates already. It’s quite clearly a case of gross sexual
discrimination and tests a tired father’snerves to the extreme.Someone with more energy needs to do
something about it.And don’t get me started on the differ-
ence between maternity and paternityleave in South Africa!A mother needs time to heal physically
and emotionally. In most cases she needsto breastfeed every three hours, so theyobviously need to spend a long time athome after giving birth.A father’s role during this time is
nothing to scoff at, especially if he mustget up to go to work in the morning.Three days of paternity leave is a joke.
Hear my bone-wearied chuckle. – AndréBakkes

Residents only.”and another “Cul-de-sac. No outlet. DEADEND”. Why are motorists so arrogant toignore these road signs to the frustrationof Langeberg Heights residents? Every-one ended up making a U-turn at the endof Hennops Street, wasting their owntime anyway! – Anonymous

ingewy.
Voordat ek my sitplek
Volgens lt.kol.
Toevra Whitey so ewe of ons opdwelms is, want dis net mense wattik wat so ver sal stap.

The diversity of the CabernetFranc varietal and terroir, and themany flavour profiles
South African winemakers derivefrom this, was clear at a tastingpresented by Cape wine masterChristine Rudman at the spectacu-larOldenburgVineyardsnearStel-lenbosch recently.Seven wines were tasted: HPF
Swartskaap 2012 from Sondags-kloofnearStanford,HannayWines2014 from Elgin, Ormonde Ondine2013 fromDarling, Oldenburg 2013,Raats Family Wines 2013 andAvontuur Estate 2011 from Stellen-bosch and Druk-my-Niet 2011 from
Paarl.The different wines ranged from
the fruitier but balanced styles oftheOrmondeandHannaywines, tothe softer rounded profiles of theAvontuur and the Druk-my-Niet,the elegant minerality of the Old-enburg and Swartskaap and thelongevity of the Raats which willeasily keep for another decade.Pricing was a talking point as wellas the wines ranged from R85 toR425 per bottle.“To my mind Cabernet Franc is
underpriced in South Africa. Pro-ducers don’t always know exactlywhat theyhave, as the diverse pric-
ing reflects. The quality and versa-tility of the varietal makes this afantastic food wine and a wine tokeep, or you can find an easy-drinking fruitier style which iseasy to enjoy next to the braai,”commented Christine. All of these wines and more can
be tasted and purchased at the sec-ond Cabernet Franc Carnivalwhich is being held on Saturday21 May from 11:00 to 17:00 at Avon-tuur Estate. The participating wineries are:
Avontuur Estate, Cape Chamonix,CK Wines, Doolhof Wine Estate,Druk-My-Niet Estate, HannayWines, Hermanuspietersfontein,KWV, Lynx Wines, Mitre’s Edge,Oldenburg Vineyards, OrmondeVineyards, Raats Family Wines,Romond Wines, Whalehaven andWarwick Wines.Carnival visitors will once again

Some women tend to believe they are thefairer sex and thus incapable of looking afterthemselves. The Vredelust Dutch Reformedchurch is holding four self-defence classesstarting onMonday 23 May in the VredelustActivity Centre (behind Brights) in Bostonfrom 18:30 to 20:30 to empower women to de-fend themselves.“The classes aim to help women to be em-
powered, to be able to defend themselves inthreatening situations such as rape, hijack-ing, choke-hold, confined spaces and muchmorewithas little forceaspossible andwith-out landing up becoming an offender them-selves,” says Louise Honeyman, church sec-retary. “Too often a victim lands up becom-ing the offender. We teachwomen of all ages, shapes and sizes how to get out of a situation
with as little force as possible,”.The two instructors are Piet Venter and
Dirk Odendaal and they have a wealth ofknowledge about self-defence.As a member of the South African Securi-
ty Cluster since 1980, Venter received exten-sive training in combative arts in generaland the Russian combative system in partic-ular. In the early 1990s this particular Rus-sian system was declassified in Russia andled to Russian martial arts that we know to-day. Realising that law enforcement inSouth Africa needs a highly specialisedskill, Venter then developed a system thatwent beyond self-defence to include hand-to-hand skill for armed offender neutralisa-tion, knife defence, gun retention and dis-arming as well as control and restraint tech-niques.In the process he designed several courses
specific to different areas of law enforce-ment. These are not restricted to physicalskills, but include areas such as tacticalcommunication and predicting violent be-haviour. Venter recruited Odendaal, him-self amember of law enforcement since 1986,during the development of this system. To-gether they founded Closed Quarter CombatSouth Africa (CQCSA), thereby makingthese skills available to specialised law en-forcement units, general law enforcementprofessionals and the public. The system gives law enforcement profes-
sionals the specialised skill they need opera-tionally, while it increases their ability tosurvive an attack.Between Venter and Odendaal they have
trained more than a hundred instructorsand hundreds of people both privately andin law enforcement.
Together theyhavemore than 65 years’ ex-perience in law enforcement. On a daily ba-sis they work with both the victims of vio-lent crime and the perpetrators. They havethe advantage to stay current with the mo-dus operandi of these criminals and the abil-ity to update course work accordingly. The system they teach does not involve
years of physical training. A student of thissystem will reap results from the very firstlesson. It is suitable for people of all ages andphysical ability.Similar to Russian martial arts, all train-
ing is based on Christian principles, the fo-cus is always on using the minimum forceand to obey all aspects of the law. They accommodate 20 people and booking
is essential. The cost is R350 per person.V Interested parties can make a booking by phoningLouise on 072 937 1024 or 021 950 4443.

She may look like your average teenag-er, but this Stellenberg songbird Julan-ie J is anything but.
In fact, the 17-year-old has already enjoyedchart success with her debut album. WhenSpirit Breakout was released last year, itwent to number three on the South AfricaniTunes chart and placed at number 34 ontheir international chart in a matter of 24hours.Now, just a few months later, Julanie is
already cooking up something new.Until recently, she’s been performing
what she describes as “Christian contempo-rarymusic”, but this year she’smade the de-cision to move into the secular market.“I feel like it’s a bigger platform, and this
is what I love,” she explains, referring to thenew “RnB and pop” songs she’s been work-ing on.Julanie has been writing songs since she
was a child, and besides the 12 originaltracks onSpirit Breakout, and the new songsshe is writing for her upcoming FearlessHeart, due to be released in 2017, she’s alsobeenpenninghits for local and internationalartists. One of these is Congolese star Lokua Kan-
za and more recently she’s been workingwith Helmut Meijer on his new project Cal-ev. Her writing collaborations have mostlybeen a result of the response to her debut al-bum. “They liked the music and the soundof the album.” Others came after her per-formances on television shows like SABC3’sExpresso.While Julanie calls Spirit Breakout a “typ-
ical worship album with a bit of pop”, she’splanning something a little more edgy whenshe goes back into studio this time round.“Itwill haveakindof Jessie J andBeyoncé
feel,” she says, adding that she’s already en-listed the help of The Arrows’ Pamela DeMenezes for Fearless Heart.Julanie will performher first ever secular
show at Barnyard Willowbridge on Monday16May, in preparation for her performancesat the Grahamstown National Arts festival.“I’mkindof excited for that; I think it’s goingto be a fun show.”Julanie will be performing a combination
of jazz, pop, RnB andwhat she calls “fun, lis-
tenable music” with the help of sound engi-neer Duane Brown who is also the man be-hind Elvis Blue’s live sound, Winston Sil-jeur on keys and JP Crouch on drums, among others. She’ll also play some of the songs off Fear-
less Heart for the first time and says: “It’s adeep show, but on a fun level.”“It’s songs about love and people; strug-
gles they have and struggles I have.”When she returns fromGrahamstown, Ju-
lanie will be preparing for the launch of herdebut book, Hearts Can Heal. The book will be published by American
based company E-Gen and deals with over-coming abuse and her own journey of heal-ing.In themeantime, music fans can catch her

SAREL BURGER

Maak opofferings“As rugbyspeler maak jy baie opoffe-
“My ouma, Johanna, alombekend asKleintjie, is van kleintyd my grootste in-spirasie.
“Elke keer as ek tuis speel, is my ouersdaar.

KLUBRUGBY: AFRIGTER GESELS
AVRIL FILLIES
Hy is baie betrokke by die voorspe-lers.

At the tender age of twelve Enya van Niekerketched her name in history on Thursday 7April as the youngest female swimmer everto swim from Robben Island to BloubergStrand.
Whatmakes this feat evenmoreremarkable is the fact that shebraved the icy cold water withoutawetsuit. Enya’s attempt is recog-nised by Cape Long DistanceSwim Association (CLDSA).
The Table View PrimarySchool learner completed the7.5km distance in a time of threehours and 14 minutes.
“I trained five months for thisswimming in the ocean with thewater being between 13 and 15 degrees,” shesays. Some days were tougher than others, but in the end it was all worth it. Besides thecold water I also had to dodge hundreds of jel-lyfish which required focus to navigate it
safely to the end.“Brendan Hiscock who swam with me en-
couraged me and helped a lot. The first halfwas pretty easy, but soon after that the tideturned against us and it took a lot of mentaltoughness to complete the distance. I kept im-
agining I was in a hot tub,” laugh-ed Enya.
Her father, Leon, took her toBig Bay every day for her to com-plete her 2km swim. The goal wasto do 10km every week.
“I am a very proud dad. Enyashowed tremendous courage anda fighting spirit for five months. In the end all the sacrifices wereworth it. It was something shewanted to do and now she cantick the box,” said Leon.
Enya is a member of the Nippers Big BayLifesavingClub. “I enjoy spending time in thesea and I will definitely do the swim again inthe future; let’s just hope the sea will be calmand make it a little bit easier,” she chuckled.
