king workers intimidated VRCID staff andtrashed the streets of Parow and Goodwood.Themarch,which formedpart of a city-wi-

de protected Samwu strike, was escorted bylaw enforcement vehicles.But VRCID CEO Derek Bock referred to

the strikingworkers as a “mob” that threate-ned and harrassed VRCID cleaning staff,who then had to move for their own safety.“The VRCID condemns in the strongest

possible way the action by those strikingworkers who overturned refuse removalbins and council green litter bins duringtheir march,” says Bock. He agreed strikeaction is a legitimate formof highlighting la-bour grievances, “but to damage council orprivate property and to litter the streets forother people to clean afterwards is totallyunacceptable”.“The excuse used by unions that it is a cri-

minal element that joins their marches doesnot hold water anymore, this is pure thugge-ry and intimidation. The question to the uni-ons is simple: who is now going to clean uptheir mess and who is going to pay for it?”Bock asks.

The draft Environmental Impact As-sessment (EIA) for these changes hasjust been released and is open for pub-lic and authority comment until 25May.

On Sunday Samwu announced that closeto 6 000 workers across Cape Town will takepart in service delivery strike action untilissues with the City were resolved.

“The areas standing out are situated closeto the nature reserve and the busier streets

such as Thomas Bowler Drive. Here it wasfound that items taken are normally cellu-lar phones and handbags. These are itemsnormally left inside the vehicle when the oc-cupants are inside premises they are visi-ting,” said Mostert.

In Bothasig, says Mostert, most of thebreak-ins or theft from motor vehicles oc-cur during day time with the same tendencyas Edgemead where small items are taken.

“Residents are requested to be on the loo-kout for suspicious people,” he said.

Theft out of motor vehicles on the increase

Cops take children fishingPolice officers from Bothasig woke up at05:00 on Saturday to go fishing in Portervil-le with learners from the Wolraad Woltema-de and Bosmansdam primary schools.

Last year Bothasig police got childrenfrom the two schools to join a fishing pro-gramme. Led by Warrant Officer Luan Ste-ars, the learners were taught about angling.This continued into 2015 and this past wee-kend 30 excited children had the chance tofish at the Voorberg correctional facility inPorterville.

Police spokesperson Jacques Mostertsaid the children were accompanied bymembers fromtheBothasigpolice anda tea-cher from each school, as well as parentsand other adults.

“Great was the excitement when the firstcatches were made and from there on the

coaches were busy ensuring the fish caughtmade it to the shore and were unhooked wit-hout injuring fish or fisherman,” said Mos-tert.

Station commander Lt Col Patrick Jacobssaid the project was initiated to give Botha-sig police the opportunity to interact withlocal children.

“As a result of the fishing project, the chil-dren are taught discipline and patience,which are needed to become good fisher-man. They also have the opportunity to in-teract with police members on a personallevel,” said Jacobs.

A total 231 fish were caught and releasedand an additional bonus was that six of thelearners will have the opportunity to try outfor the Western Province development an-gling team.

TheGoodwood police thanked the publicafter members of the community helpedto obtain arrests in a number of cases.Warrant Officer Wayne Theunis,

spokesperson for the Goodwood police,says the help from the public makestheir work easier. “If the public doesn’tassist us, all our work will be in vain.Logic says we cannot be everywhere, soit is imperative thatmembers of the pub-lic help us by being our eyes and ears onthe ground,” says Theunis.An example of how the vigilance of a

member of the public assisted the policewas when a suspect stole a battery outof a truck in Fisher Street. “A man whowas on his way to work saw the suspectand chased him. He caught the suspectwith the truck battery in a backpack andtook the suspect back to the scene andinformed the owner, who was unawareof the theft,” says Theunis.The 35-year-old suspect was handed to

Goodwood police and appeared in theGoodwoodmagistrate’s court. “It is goodto know that people do not turn a blindeye to crime. The member of the publicrisks injury, but his civil duty out-weighed everything else,” says Theunis.

Die Hoërskool President in Goodwood hetverlede week sy 51ste bestaansjaar gevierdeur ’n kokerboom en ’n gedenkplaat te ont-hul.

Die boom is verlede jaar aangeplant en diedoel daarvan is dat dit die volgende 50 jaarsaam met die skool sal groei.

Arthur Reichhardt, oudleerder en die per-soon wat instrumenteel was in die daarstel-ling van die gedenkplaat, sê die boom be-hoort oor 50 jaar eers volwassenheid te be-reik. “Die boom kry ’n spesiale plek by dieingang van die skool. Die klippe wat gebruikis om die voetstuk vir die gedenkplaat tebou, kom uit die oorspronklike klipmure in

die skool se tuin en strek van die skoolsaaltot by die tennisbane,” sê Reichhardt.

Hy sê die boom en gedenkplaat moet dieleerders van die skool inspireer.

“Leerders moet weet dat hulle, soos dieboom, saam met die skool groei. Die gedenk-plaat is byvoorbeeld geskenk deur oudleer-ders wat nooit hul verbintenis met Presidentvergeet het nie. Daai trots moet by elke leer-der teenwoordig wees,” volgens Reichhardt.

Reichhardt het spesiale dank gehad virLouwtjie Rothman, oudburgemeester vanGoodwood, wat ook die onthulling byge-woon het. “Rothman kom jare reeds met dieskool aan. In die beginjare van die skool washy baie nou betrokke en Rothman (klerewin-kel) was ook uit die staanspoor die skool seamptelike klereverskaffer.”

Gerrit Odendaal (skoolhoof), Louwtjie Rothman (oudburgermeester van Goodwood), Wynand Foot(bouer van die monument en opsigter), Arthur Reichhardt (oudleerder), Lynette Venter (adjunk-hoof) en Elita van Dyk (adjunkhoof) is hier by die onthulling van die gedenkplaat.

This wreath and crossadorned lane is not only afrustration for vehicle driversand cyclists due to its narrow-ness, but is now rapidly deterio-rating and will require anupgrade in the near future.Unfortunately all the moneyspent on this road will notresolve the problems andfrustrations experienced by theroad users.When we moved to Durbanvil-

le some 15 years ago the localcouncillor paid us a visit andthis same road came up in ourdiscussions. He then advised methat the problems would soonbe resolved as there were plansto discontinue use of this roadas the municipality planned toconstruct a new road.

would follow next to thevineyards making a right curvearound Pampoenkraal. Furtherdown the hill it would thenmake a left curve and join upwith Jip de Jager Road (M16).

I presume that TygervalleyRoad would be connected intothis new road to allow vehiclesaccess back onto the M13should they wish access to theN7 etc.This proposal makes sense to

me as it would reduce theaccess problems currentlyexperienced in all the surroun-ding areas, it will also cater forfuture growth in the area thatwill only compound the pro-blems we already experience ifnot resolved.Hopefully this was not only a

pipe dream of the councillor atthat time.

girls by helping them cope with menstrua-tion.The Project Dignity Trust has distribu-

ted 39 000 SUBZwashable, re-usable sanita-ry pads that cleverly clip into panties,changing the lives of Kwa-Zulu Natal teen-agers and giving them a chance to attendas many school days as possible.Now Project Dignity has moved to the

Westen Cape and with a team of ambassa-dors and “SUBZheroes”, are targetingschools here.Educational talks about puberty and the

female reproductive system form part ofthe activities, giving the girls access to im-portant information seldom discussedopenly, says SUBZ and Project DignityTrust founder Sue Barnes.“Our goal is to uplift and empower the

girls of South Africa. An enormous num-ber of school girls miss a week of schoolevery month as a result of menstruationand not being able to manage their periodsproperly,” said Barnes.She says the eco-friendly, re-usable pro-

try will take part, all vying to take the title intheir respective divisions.In the senior women’s division Kim Falconer

and Michaela du Toit will be competing for thetitle.DuToit has justmoved up from the junior sec-

tion and recently took part in the InternationalJunior World event in Estonia in March.In the senior men’s section, Johann Wilkin-

sonwill be competing to retainhisnational title.Four skaters will take part in the junior wom-

en’s section and Matthew Samuels and Anciovan Tonder will go head to head in the juniormen’s division.There are 11 entrants in the novice women

and men’s division with 21 skaters taking partin the pre-novice girls and boys division.The youngest section – juvenile girls and boys

– have seven skaters in action.In the synchronised skating division, where

was on form over four days at VictoriaCountry Club in Kwa-Zulu-Natal, openingwith a five-under-par66 en route to an im-pressive seven-under-par 277 total and a fourstroke victory over fel-low Western Provinceplayer Elton James.The winning dis-

play – his fifth on themid-amateur circuitthis season – left the38-year-old Roux ex-tremely satisfied.

Keeping focus“I had the lead from

day one and kept it,but thatwas quite a lotof pressure and it feelsreally good that I wasable to pull itthrough,” Roux said.“I just felt my game

was there, but more importantly, I had tosleep on the lead for three nights and nee-ded a lot of patience to keep the focus.“It’s a wonderful feeling to know that
