As we look forward to another academic year for the Pre–K—12 students from our parish, I am asking parishioners to contribute to our parish’s tuition assistance funds. If you have any questions about how you may donate your sacrificial gift, please contact myself at the Parish Office or via email at [email protected]. You’re consideration is greatly appreciated.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Following Jesus is not easy. In striving to live out our faith, we may at times find ourselves at odds with
other people—even those who are closest to us. But
we can turn to Jesus, who also suffered opposition and rejection, to give us the strength and grace needed to remain
steadfast in faith and not lose heart.
Answering the call to heroic

I cannot say thanks enough for the place to stay, the meals provided, and all of your prayers and support. Please keep me in your prayers and know that you are in mine. God bless you!

MINISTRY MINUTES
Reflection ~ Robin Black-Rubenstein
The words and descriptions used in the Gospel from Luke 12:49-53 do not fit with the image of the kind, compassionate and loving Jesus that we read about in the other parts of Luke and the other Gospel writers. The mystery in this writing has been theologized many different ways. Some say his strong language expresses his mission to oppose what is false. John Pilch, a noted biblical, cultural anthropologist helps to explain some of the setting for us. There are few trees in the Holy Land, so in Jesus’ day, most cooking and heating used fire, using fuel such as animal dung. The dung was placed on top of a salt slab, which acted as a catalyst to enhance the quality of the fire. Fire helped people to live. Jesus stated that He came to “set the earth on fire,” because He would be a catalyst to start and keep the fire going.
Sometimes when we are catalyst and work to keep the fire of peace, justice and love going in our lives and in the world, like the disciples, there are people who disagree and sometimes they come from our own families. Jesus does not desire that family members be set against each other, but knows that living the words of the Gospel will not always be comfortable and may not be graciously received.
There are times in our lives that are filled with joy and hope and other times when hardship deflates our spirits. In Hebrews 12: 1-4 Paul is reminding the Hebrews that others before them experienced suffering, pain and death and God continues to give grace, courage and love. Similar to Luke’s Gospel, Paul’s comparisons tell us we need to have courage to continue on in faith and trust in the Lord. We pray that we can accept what we cannot control and continue to cultivate, develop and set free the desire to follow Christ on our way through life.

I never knew any of these people. They are a set of names I chose at random from the bronze memorial plaques at the World Trade Center Memorial. At the same time, they are not at all random when you see them along with the other 1,988 names on those plaques. They are all victims of almost unimaginable evil. I visited both the 9/11 Memorial and the 9/11 Museum last week and tried to understand the immensity of so much taking of human life in a single day. Except for offering a prayer for the repose of their souls I could not fully grasp the gravity of that place.
The Museum is a somber place. It is a memorial and not a place of celebration and the best attempts to display twisted metal and crushed firetrucks and some surviving scraps of paper only begin to signal the pain that their deaths left behind. There was a poster with the faces of all the many firemen who had lost their lives on that day while attempting to save others. That poster was both tragic and hopeful. Hopeful in that the counterbalance to such an evil act was the heroic act from many “first responders”. If we ever stop acknowledging that we have intrinsic value because we are created by God, then who will value each of us enough to risk their lives to save our lives?
Our relationship with our God is so much more important beyond Sunday Mass. It gives meaning to every moment of our lives and offers hope in the face of tragedy. There are many unidentified human remains held in a repository at the museum. Among those not identified are those undocumented aliens who worked in food service or on cleaning crews in the building. We have some of their DNA but no way to know beyond that who they were and who is missing them and mourning them. We are able to feel for their families and know the pain of their surviving loved ones. We can turn to our God and ask for comforting grace for all of those families and friends who are still missing and mourning their loved ones who were the 9/11 victims.
Because Jesus came among us and suffered for us, we know that he understands our suffering. Therefore we can turn to
Jesus in confidence and ask for help in making sense of our
human potential to be so inhuman towards each other. We can also work very hard to love others so that there is less
space for evil to gain a foothold in our world.

Stewardship
In our Second Reading from the letter to the Hebrews, the writer says, “…persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.” The author of the letter to the Hebrews has traditionally been considered to be St. Paul. There are three elements that more or less jump out at you. The reference to life being a race is similar to other thoughts expressed by St. Paul (“I have run the good race; I have kept the faith”). In addition, there are two key words which also are themes Paul often expressed. Those are found in the word “persevere” and in the phrase “while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.” Paul often points to perseverance as a necessary approach to being a good and consistent Christian. And he also tells us over and over that we must keep our eyes and hopes and motivations on something above, on Jesus.
It is easy to look at life as a race. In doing that nonetheless, we all understand that we are not speaking of a sprint, but of a marathon. In Greek, the word used which we translate as “persevere” is hupomone, which also might be translated as “endure.” God has set a race before us. God wants us to run that race and He wants us to finish it correctly. To do that requires endurance, the willingness to continue and to seek holiness as good stewards, because our focus is on what is to come, not what is. By keeping our eyes on Jesus, we don't lose sight of what is important in this life; our relationship with God and with each other.
