And close to you bid me that with your saints
I may be praising you for ever and ever. Amen.
PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH FOR THE WORLD DURING THE
OUTBREAK OF CORONAVIRUS
To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our tribula1on, and
having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we
confidently invoke your patronage also.
Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate
Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with
which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you
graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has
purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to
aid us in our necessi1es.
O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the
chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving Father, ward
off from us every contagion of error and corrup1ng influence;
O our most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven
assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness.
As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now
protect God's Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and
from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your
constant protec1on, so that, supported by your example and
your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness,
and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.
CLOSING HYMN: “Though the Mountains May Fall”
Though the mountains may fall and the hills turn to dust,
Yet the love of the Lord will stand,
As a shelter for all who will call on his name.
Sing the praise and the glory of God.
1. Could the Lord ever leave you?
Could the Lord forget his love?
Though a mother forsake her child,
He will not abandon you. Refrain:

2. Should you turn and forsake him,
He will gently call your name.
Should you wander away from him,
He will always take you back. Refrain:

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK —JUNE 21, 2020 (PG. 1)
Tree Planting at St. Stanislaus
Last week I mentioned that we are soliciting donations for
five new trees on the east side of the school parking lot to
replace the dying ones that have been removed. (We will
have a similar project later in the year to focus on the
church parking lot. One of the ash trees is already half dead
and at least two of the others are ailing.) I mentioned the
cost of each tree but didn’t mean to indicate that a donor
needed to give the full amount in order to be recognized.
Gifts of any amount are needed and welcome. A
collective plaque will be put in the school and another in
the church. There will NOT be a plaque by each tree if
someone gives the full amount. Perhaps some “stimulus”
money (if you received some earlier this year) could be
directed this way.
I was very happy to learn that a family from the Dual
Language Academy made a donation of $500 within a short
while after word went out to them last Friday morning!

FATHERS DAY A BRIEF HISTORY
How and when did it really get started? This might
surprise you. Here in the US, Father's Day is celebrated
on the third Sunday of June. In the Roman Catholic
tradi!on, da!ng back to 1508, fathers were celebrated
on Saint Joseph's Day, March 19. In many countries,
such as the USA, Father's Day has become a secular
celebra!on as well, but not un!l the 20
th
century. It is
also common for Catholics to honor their "spiritual
father," their parish priest, on Father's Day.
A/er the successful promo1on of Mother's Day the
first observance of a day honoring fathers was held on
July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, in the Williams
Memorial Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton
was mourning the loss of her father, when in December
1907, the Monongah mining disaster in nearby
Monongah killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers, leaving
around a thousand fatherless children. Clayton
suggested that their pastor honor all those fathers. It
did not gain trac1on beyond that town at that 1me. In
1911, Jane Addams proposed that a citywide Father's
Day celebra1on be held in Chicago, but she was turned
down.
On June 19, 1910, a Father's Day celebra!on was held
at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington, by Sonora Dodd.
Her father, the civil war veteran William Jackson Smart,
was a single parent who raised his six children there.
Mrs. Dodd ini!ally suggested June 5, her father's
birthday. The pastors did not have enough !me to
prepare their sermons, and the celebra!on was deferred
to the third Sunday in June. Several local clergymen
accepted the idea, and on June 19, 1910, the first
Father's Day, "sermons honoring fathers were presented
throughout the city".
Americans resisted the holiday for its first few
decades, viewing it as nothing more than an a4empt by
merchants to replicate the commercial success of
Mother's Day. By the mid1980s, the Father's Day
Council wrote, "[Father's Day] has become a Second
Christmas for all the men's gi!oriented industries."
A bill to accord na1onal recogni1on of the holiday
was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President
Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak at a
Father's Day celebra1on and he wanted to make it an
officially recognized federal holiday, but Congress
resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized.
US president Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924
that the day be observed throughout the en1re na1on,
but he stopped short at issuing a na1onal
proclama1on. Two earlier aDempts to formally
recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress.
In 1957, Maine senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a
Father's Day proposal accusing Congress of ignoring
fathers for 40 years. In 1966, President Lyndon B.
Johnson issued the first presiden1al proclama1on
honoring fathers, designa1ng the third Sunday in June
as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a
permanent na1onal holiday when President Richard
Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

June is a month traditionally devoted to the
Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The Feast of the Sacred Heart this year was on Friday,
June 19. There is no fixed date as such for this feast as it
always falls on the Friday after the feast of Corpus
Christi. That date for Corpus Christi varies as well as it
falls on the second Sunday after Pentecost which is the
seventh Sunday after Easter.
Devotion to the wounded heart of Jesus has its origins
in the eleventh century, when pious Christians meditated
on the Five Wounds of Christ. It was not until 1670,
however, that a French priest, St. John Eudes, celebrated
the first Feast of the Sacred Heart.
Around the same time, a pious sister by the name of
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque began to report visions of
Jesus. He appeared to her frequently, and in December
1673, he permitted St. Margaret Maryas had once
allowed St. Gertrudeto rest her head upon his Heart. As
she experienced the comfort of his presence, Jesus
told her of his great love and explained that he had
chosen her to make his love and his goodness known
to all.
The following year, in June or July of 1674, St.
Margaret Mary reported that Jesus wanted to be honored
under the figure of His Heart of flesh. He asked the
faithful to receive Him in the Eucharist frequently,
especially on the First Friday of the month, and to
observe a Holy Hour of devotion to Him.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK —JUNE 21, 2020 (PG. 2)
And then in 1675, during the octave of Corpus
Christi, Margaret Mary received the vision which came
to be known as the “great apparition.” Jesus asked that
the modern Feast of the Sacred Heart be celebrated each
year on the Friday following Corpus Christi, in reparation
for the ingratitude of men for the sacrifice which
Christ had made for them.
On May 8, 1873, the devotion to the Sacred Heart was
formally approved by Pope Pius IX; and 26 years later
on July 21, 1899 Pope Leo XIII urgently recommended
that all bishops throughout the world observe the feast in
their dioceses.
I especially enjoy praying the LITANY OF THE
SACRED HEART which reminds us of the many
manifestations and qualities of the LOVE of JESUS.
I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE
LOOK IT UP (in a prayer book or on the internet)
AND PRAY IT REGULARLY.
