"Why did we choose SAP? In a nut

shell, because we are the leading company in our field and we wanted tofeel confident of continuing to be theleader," he says.

Another reason Devi chose SAP

was the availability of an ideal implementation partner, TVS InfotechLtd., right in its home city of Chennai. TVS Infotech, a member of the

US$5 billion TVS Group, is a globalIT services company serving small andmidsize enterprises. The firm specializes in SAP software implementation, upgrades, enhancements, support, and maintenance.

the software could not be extended to

the firm's subsidiary business units, whose operations were entirely manual. Assessing these business units'contributions to the overall companywas a herculean undertaking.

Devi realized these challenges had tobe addressed if it hoped to continue itsrapid expansion. Therefore, the company resolved to implement new software with strong, integrated supportfor production, financials, and overallplanning of the business, includingthe subsidiaries.

One alternative considered was a

regional vendor that proposed a highlycustomized solution, but then Devirealized how much better and safer thefuture would be with SAPsoftware.

"Standard solutions are much easier

to support," says Dr. K. Sudhakar, Project Coordinator for Devi. "SAP Business All-in-One solutions have been

engineering products both for Indiaand for export.

Until recently, Devi had no business software supporting its production operations. Efficiency sufferedas a result, and inventory costs wereexcessive, especially since many ofthe firm's products have a short shelflife. To boost product quality, manufacturing productivity, and customersatisfaction, Devi wanted to measure

its plants' performance but found thisimpossible without the right software.

In finance, Devi had software in

place, but it was poorly integrated, hurting the company's ability to maketimely payments to vendors. Financialplanning was difficult, especially since

ALL ON THE SAMEPAGE-

From having poorly integrated software for financials and none at all in

manufacturing or its subsidiary busi-

ness units, Devi today has integratedits departments and subsidiaries withan SAP Business All-in-One solution.

With a single, centralized informationsource, Devi has introduced big efficiency improvements.

With SAP software, Devi has unified

the company under a single solutionusing a single database. All production steps are integrated, from planning and raw materials receipt to finalshipment and invoicing.

Accounting is simplified, helpingthe firm issue payments on time and

keep vendor satisfaction high. Customer satisfaction is up as well dueto on-time shipments and qualityimprovements that are demonstratedby a reduced reject rate in quality control. With crisper production processes and better planning tools, finishedgoods spend less time in inventory.

This saves substantial costs, especially in the case of short-shelf-lifeitems. With SAP software, Devi can

now monitor and measure the performance of its plants and the contributions of its subsidiaries and quicklydeliver results to management. Information such as this is allowing thefirm to make the right decisions atthe right time to continue its industryleadership.

In terms of operational benefits, customer satisfaction for Devi went up by

15%; finished goods rejection by.quality control came down by 20%; inventory costs dipped by 30%; and overalloperating costs reduced by 5%. ~
