ItisadeepprivilegetoextendwarmgreetingstoallwhocompriseourSchoolofMusiccommunity.DuringmytransitiontotheUniversityofMinnesotaandtheTwinCitiesregion,Ihavebeenreflectingonthefactthateachofusbelongstomanydifferentcommunities.RaymondWilliamsoncedescribedcommunityasa“warmlypersuasive”term.(Keywords,1973)Ilikethisdescriptionbecauseitgoesbeyondphysicalproximityandcommonintereststosuggestqualitiessuchasopen-ness,transparency,respect,reciprocity,anddialogue.Awarmlypersuasivecommunityembracestheinevitabletensionbetweenindividualneedsandachievementsandacollaborativevisionforthequalityoflifeamongabroadercitizenry.
Inthislight,Iameagertoengageininclusiveandpur-posefulconversationsacrosstheSchoolofMusiccommu-nity—faculty,staff,alumni,universitycolleagues,friends,andsteadfastsupporters.Ilookforwardtoconsideringourindividualandcollectivevisionsandtheirvaluetodi-
versecommunitiesinandbeyondtheuni-versity.Ianticipatethinking togetherabout stewardshipoftheschool’slegacyandhowwemaybestalignouraspirationsforthepublicgoodwiththoseofthepub-licresearchuniversityinwhichwereside.Mostimportantly,Ivaluethepotential
forgenerativedialogueabouthowwemaybestprepareourstudentstomakesignificantcontributionstolocal,national,andinternationalcommunitiesinarapidlyevolvingglobalsociety.
ThisissueofTuttiportraysanimpressivearrayoffac-ulty,student,andalumniachievements,allofwhichrepresentartisticandscholarlyexcellenceandadvance
musicengagementforbroadercommunities.Iknowyou,likeI,willcelebratetheseachievements.WehavealsoincludedacalendarofeventsshowingthevitalroletheschoolplaysintheculturallifeoftheTwinCities.Iwelcomethoselivinginorvisitingtheregiontomarkthesedates,checkourwebsiteforadditionalevents,andparticipateasoftenaspossibleinthispublicevidenceofourmusicalandeducationalexcellence.

OnApril25,2008theUniversityofMinnesotaSymphonyOrchestrahadtheonce-in-a-lifetimeopportunitytorehearseunderthebatonofthelegendaryconductorSirNevilleMarriner.MaestroMarriner’sappearanceinFergusonHallwaspartofaspecialcollaborationwiththeMinnesotaOrchestramadepossiblebyagenerousgiftofsupportfromGeorgeandJevnePennock.
UniversityofMinnesotaSymphonyOrchestraconductorMarkRussellSmithpreparedMozart’sSymphonyinC( Jupiter-Sinfonie)forMarriner,anesteemedMozartspecialist.Smithwasmorethanpleasedtositbackandwatchhisorchestraperformwiththeworld-renownedMaestro.

“SirNevilleMarrinerisaleg-endinthemusicworld,anditwastrulyanhonortohavehimconducttherehearsalwiththeSym-phonyOrchestra.ItwasphenomenalhowMaestroMar-rinerwasabletocommunicatewiththeorchestrausingsuchcontrolledyetbreathtakingges-tures.Althoughheis84yearsold,theenergyandenthusiasmheemittedwasastonishing.Withsuchpassion,hewasabletoproducesoundsoutofastu-dentorchestrathattrulyrivaledthatofthegreatprofessionalsymphonicorchestras.Thatisthesignofagreatconductor,butevenmoresothatofabrilliantmusician.TheideashehadfortheMozartJupiterSymphonyNo.41providedmewithanewunderstandingofthecomplexemotioninMozart’smusic.Al-thoughverysubtle,thereweremomentsMaestroMarrinerpresentedthattrulyshowedhisunderstandingofMozart.ThiscouldhaveverywellbeentheonlytimethatIgettheoppor-tunitytoplayunderthebatonofMaestroMarriner,anditissomethingthatIwillrememberfortherestofmylife.”

“Asanorchestralmusician,work-ingwithSirNevilleMarrinerwasbothhelpfulandinspiring.It’snotoftenthatthechancetoworkwithsuchanimportantmusicalfigurecomesalong.Par-ticularlysincetheorchestrawaspreparingaMozartsymphony,itwaswonderfultoworkwithanexpertinthatfield.Naturally,manyofuswerenervousprepar-ingtoplayforhim,butheputtheensembleateaseimmediately,andwewereabletoconcentrateonthematterathand.Hehadalottosayaboutthemusic,butalsoaboutmusicians—heremindedmethatoboistssuchasmyselfcouldbedivasand‘stoplisteningtoeveryoneelsethemomenttheypickuptheirinstruments.’Itwaslighthearted,butfullofgoodmusicalinsight.Theorchestrahasbeenluckytoworkwithgreatguestconductorsallyear,andthisrehearsalwasparticularlybeneficialforthewholeorchestraandeveryonewhowasabletolisten.ItspeakswellfortheSchoolofMusicthatweareabletohavepeoplelikeSirNevilleMarrinerstopby.”

Thisfall,theUniversityofMinnesotaSchoolofMusicwillpresenttheNorthAmericanpremiereofcomposerandSchoolofMusicprofessorJamesDillon’sThe Book of Elements,acycleforsolopianoinfivevolumes,inTedMannConcertHall.NorikoKawai,world-renownedpianistandSchoolofMusicvisit-ingassociateprofessor,looksforwardtothisspecialevent.
The Book of ElementsVolumesI–Varededi-catedtotheAustralianmasterRogerWood-wardwhogavethepremiereofVolumeI.However,eachofthefivevolumeswerecom-missionedbyfivedifferentpianists.KawaipremieredVolumeIIandhasalreadygivencompleteperformances(arareeventinitself)ofallfivevolumesattheUKHuddersfieldFestival,TheRoyalCollegeofMusicinLon-don,andAlicanteFesitivalinSpain.Shesays“...I’mnotkeenontermslikecontemporarymusicspecialist,Icertainlydonotliketobelabeledasone.InperformingDillon’smusic,firstofall,itistrueyouneedinitiallytotakeananalytical/mathematicalapproachjusttobeabletoabsorbtheenormousamountofinformation(here,youaretalkingabout90minutesofextremeintricacy),whichispainstaking,hardworkforthemindandthe

James Dillon, composerAlthoughhehaslecturedextensivelyonhisworkthroughouttheworld,JamesDillonhaslargelyremainedoutsideofacademiaworkingasafreelancecomposer.Since1980,Dillon’sworkhasbeenperformedconsistentlyandcommis-sionedworldwidebymostofthemajorfestivals,radiostations,soloists,ensembles,andorches-tras.Heistherecipientofnumerousawards,
includingthefirstHuddersfieldContemporaryMusicPrize(1976);theKranichsteinerMusikpreis(1982)fromDarmstadt,Germany;andthreeRoyalPhilharmonicSocietyMusicAwards(1997,2001and2005),theUK’smostprestigiousmusicawards.In1989,hewasnamedClassicalMusicianoftheYearbytheSunday Times.Dillon’scatalogueofwork—whichincludessolos,chambermusic,orchestral,concertos,electroacousticworks,andopera—hasbeenextensivelyrecordedonCDandispublishedbyPetersEdition,London.
Noriko Kawai, pianoNorikoKawaistudiedattheRoyalCollegeofMusicinLondonandtheAcademiadiSantaCeciliainRome.BeforehermovetotheUnitedStates,sheservedasprofessorofpianoattheRoyalCollegeofMusicinLondon.Shehasgivenmanyrecitalsandbroadcaststhroughouttheworldandiswellknownfortheextraordinaryrangeofherrepertoire,fromRenaissancecomposerstonewmusic,andinnovativeprogramsjuxtaposingstandardandcontemporaryworks.ShehasgivenduorecitalswiththeviolinistIrvineArdittiandconcertswiththeLeopoldStringTrio,theArdittiQuartet,andtheQuatuorDiotima.
SherecordedJamesDillon’sThe Book of ElementsVolumesI–VfortheNMClabel,whichreceivedunanimouscriticalacclaimincludingthe2004Editor’sChoiceinGramophone.InAugust2006,shegavetheworldpremiereofJamesDillon’sAndromedaPianoConcertoattheBBCProms,withtheBBCScottishSymphonyOrchestraconductedbyIlanVolkov.In2007,shegavetheFrenchpremiereofthesameconcertotoopentheMUSICAFestivalinStrasborg.

Young-NamKim,professorofviolinandfounderandartisticdirectoroftheChamberMusicSocietyofMin-nesota,wasafeaturedguestsoloistatthePyongyangSpringArtsFestivalinNorthKoreainApril2008.KimperformedVivaldi’sFour Seasons andaviolinconcertobythelateNorthKoreancomposerMin-HyukParkwiththePyongyangNationalUniversityOrchestra.
Kim,borninNorthKoreaandraisedinSouthKorea,lastvisitedhishomelandin2004aspartofagroupofAmericanmusiciansinvitedtotakepartinNorthKorea’sannualSpringArtsFestivalinNorthKorea’scapital,Pyongyang.Kimwasinvitedbacktothefestivalthisyearasaspecialguestsoloist.
Atthefirstrehearsalofthepiece,herealizedthattheorchestrahadanenormousaffectionandenthusiasmfortheconcerto,notunliketheattitudeofAmericanstowardtheNationalAnthem.Kimreflects,“Themusi-ciansknewthepiecelikethebackoftheirhands.Itwasperformedinaholymanner.Therehearsalinspiredmetoworkhardertomatchtheirvivacity.Itwasagreatlessonforme.(TheyweresurprisedIlearnedthe
piecesoquickly!)Itwasalsowonderfultoworkwithaconductorwhoknewthepiecesowell.Theorchestraknewthepieceequallywell.Theyhaveenormousprideintheirworkandadmirablededication.Thisishowitusedbeherealsointhepast.Rehearsalswereunlimited;youkeptrehearsinguntilyouweresatisfied.”
KimIl-sung—“TheGreatLeader”ofNorthKoreafromitsfoundinginearly1948tohisdeathin1994—proclaimedthatmusicisnecessaryandgoodforthewell-beingforthenation,referringtosomeselectedmusiciansasthe“People’sartists.”Kimsays,“People’sartistsaretreatedlikegodsbythegovernmentandthepeople.Ifeelthatthepeople,musiciansinparticular,ofNorthKoreaarenaïve,pure,anduncorrupted.Theypourtheirheartsoutwithoutworryingaboutcommercialsuccess.Ifyoucomplimentthemtheyalwaysgivecredittotheircountry.”

absolutelyfirstclass,andtheyfeelthattheyarejustasgoodastheNewYorkPhilharmonicwhichmadeanhistoricvisittherelastFebruary.Theyhaveatraditionalrehearsalschedulesimilartothatofold-timeEurope.‘TheGreatLeader’deemedthatmusicisimportantforthenationandthatmusicmakingisnotjusttoselltickets.Playingmusicforthepeopleisanhonorandagreatservicetothenationasacitizen.Themusiciansaretotallydevotedtotheirchosenprofession,andthefocusisonartistry,nottheindustry.ThisishowIbelievemusicmakingshouldbe.Theirattitudeisamazing;youcanfeelthelevelofconcentrationoftheorchestraundertheiresteemedconductor.TheStateSymphonyisgoingtoLondoninSeptember2008.IamverycurioustoseeLondon’sresponse.
“Asperanedictfrom‘TheGreatLeader,’theMansudaeOrches-traplayswesternrepertoirebackedbytransformedKoreanfolkinstruments.Forexample,halfoftheviolinsectionplaysregularviolinsandtheotherhalfplaystransformedfolkinstrumentswithviolinregister.Veryoftenonewillfindfolkelementsintoday’sNorthKoreancompositions.ThisisnodifferentthanMahlerusingViennesefolksongsasinspiration.”
ThePyongyangNationalUniversityOrchestraisanexcellentprofessionalorchestrathatconsistsofgraduatesoftheUniver-sity—themainmusicschoolinNorthKorea.Theyhavealargefacility,withabeautifulconcerthall.
Kimwasgiventheopportunitytoobservepiano,violin,cello,flute,andpercussionlessonstakingplaceattheUniversity.Thestudentsstudywesternrepertoire,butwhenaskedtoplayapieceforaguest,KimnotedthattheychooseNorthKoreanworks.Kimpositedthattheyweretoldtodothis,butsuspectsthattheyweremorecomfortableperformingtheNorthKoreanpiece.Healsohadatourofthestateartsschoolforgiftedchildren.Kimsays,“Itwasalittlesaddeningtoseehowstrictitwas.Isawfive-andsix-year-oldsbehavinglikesoldiers.Theirworkwasprecociousandamazing,butsomewhatstifling.Theirperformancesweretooperfect.”
KimhopesthatthecommonlanguagemusicwillleadtomoreconversationsandcollaborationsthatwillonedaybringaboutpoliticalchangeinNorthKorea.WithKim’svisitsandthewell-publicizedNewYorkPhilharmonictriptoNorthKorea,itappearsthatthechangehasalreadybegun.

Thispastspring,theUniversityofMinnesotaSchoolofMusiccommunitybadeafondfarewelltoretiringvoiceprofessorLawrenceWeller.WellerarrivedontheUni-versityofMinnesotaTwinCitiescampusin1979.TheChicagonativereceivedhisformalmusictrainingattheUniversityofIllinoisandIndianaUniversityandhasperformedassingerorconductorinconcertandoperathroughoutNorthAmerica,intenEuropeancountries,andinSouthAmerica.
Overhis29yearsofteaching,WellermadeanindeliblemarkontheSchoolofMusic.AssociateprofessorandoperadirectorDavidWalshreflects,“ThefirstpersonIspoketoattheUniversityofMinnesotawasLarryWeller.Heconductedtheconferencecalltelephoneinterviewwithme,whichultimatelyledtomyappointmentasamemberoffacultyhereattheSchoolofMusic.Hiscalm,quietmannerandobviousinterestinwhatIhadtosaysoothedmyanxietiesandenabledmetopresentmyselfinthebestpossibleway.SincetakingovertheOperaTheatreprogramhereattheschool,Larryhasbeenawonderfulmentor,helpingmetomaketheadjustmentfromprofessionaloperatoacademia.Inthosedifficultmomentsweallencounter,hehasalwaysbeensomeoneIcouldturntoforfeedback,adviceandsupport.

Parthistoryoftheoryandpartanalysisofmusic,Thinking About Harmonyoffersabroadviewofmusicwrittenbetween1800and1850.Thebookfeaturestheresponsesofmusicianstothemusicthatwascreatedbycomposersoftheirtime,includingBeethoven,Chopin,andSchubert.Eachchapteroffersafascinatinglookatadifferentmusicaltopicrelatingtoharmony—chords,theirsucces-sion,theirembellishment,modulation,andsoon.Theviewsofapproximately100musicauthorsfromtheeighteenthandnineteenthcenturiesareconsidered.

PerfrmanceMyrecentperformanceswiththeMinnesotaOrchestra—playingRachmaninoff’sPianoConcertoNo.1inf#minorOp.1(withMischaSantoraconducting)—wereamongthemostmemorableandenjoyableexperiencesofmylife.ThoughIhadperformedwiththeMinnesotaOrchestrabefore,namelyin2005(performingSaint-Saëns’Carnival of the AnimalswithDanielAlfredWachsleadingtheorchestra)andinJuly2006(performingLiszt’sPianoConcertoNo.2withMusicDirectorOsmoVänskäconducting),thefourrecentperformanceswereonadifferentlevelinmanyways.

Tostart,Icametotheseconcertswithanexpectationoftotalpreparationandprofes-sionalismonmypart.BeingaDMAstudentattheUniversityofMinnesotaandnotaprofessionalpianistunderartisticmanage-ment,IhadtodemandthesamelevelofprofessionaloutputasanyotherguestartistwiththeMinnesotaOrchestrawouldgive.Thispreparationcanbedividedintomanyparts:mentalandphysical,amongothers.Theobviousmentalchallengesincludefight-ingthenerveswhileperforminginfrontofanaudiencethatexpectsgreatmusicfromagreatorchestra,aswellasbeingabletoper-fectlyexecutemypartwiththisworld-classorchestrathatregularlyengagesthegreatestclassicalperformersaround.Itwouldbealltooeasyforonetosuccumbtodoubtandfear,butduetomyprevioussuccesswiththisparticularconcerto,aswellasmypriorperformanceswiththeMinnesotaOrches-tra,Iovercameanynegativethoughtsandfocusedonlyonthetaskathand:toperformabeautifulpianoconcertowithmusiciansofthehighestartisticcaliber.ThephysicalchallengewasonethatIhadneverencoun-teredeither.Mypreviousexperiencesinsoloperformanceinvolvedasingleconcert,oneopportunitytogiveitmyall.However,thiswasacompletelydifferentsituation.Forthefirsttimeinmylife,Ihadtogiveitmyallfourtimesinarow—ThursdaythroughSunday;thisisnotcountingtherehearsalsthatoccurreddaysbeforetheconcertswhichwerethemselvesfullrun-throughs.TosaythatIwasexhaustedbytheendwouldbeanunderstatement.Iwasexhaustedaftermyfirstrehearsal,butonebuildsupphysicalandmentalenduranceeachperformance;thesurgeofadrenalineandtheexcitementthatispartofliveperformancealsocarriesonethroughtheconcerto.
Oneofthemostdifficultaspectsofperfor-manceisfocus.Ittakesanextremelyhighlevelofconcentrationtoexecuteadifficultpieceofmusicentirelyfrommemorywithpeoplelisteningandwatching.Asolopia-nistmustlisten,rememberallthenotesandhandmotions,watchtheconductorfortotalsynchrony,listentotheorchestra,heartheaccumulatedsoundbouncingbackfromthe
hall(theacousticsinOrchestraHallarequitelively),andnotgetdistractedbyrandomnoiseintheaudience,allwhilefocusingonmakingthemusiccomealivewithexpres-sionandpersonality.Eachoneofthosetasksisdifficult,butthecombinationofall(andotherunmentionedfactors)oftheseleadstoataskthatfewcanhandlesuccessfully.Themindisnotinfallible,andoftenduringaperformancemymindwillgetdistracted,forcingmetoworkharderinordertoavoidapotentialtrainwreck.Eventhesim-plestdistraction—whetheritisathoughtorfeeling,orsomethingunpredictablelikealoudcoughorcameraflash—hasthepotentialforaffectingtheoutputofthememorizedmusic.One’shealthcanalsodetractfromaperformance,asanyconcertpianistwilltellyou.Illnesscantakeitstollonthemusiciantryingtoput100%ofhis/herpowerandpassionintoaliveperformance.Ihadbeentravelingpriortotheseperformancesandhadgottensick,soduringtheconcertsIhadtoconstantlyfightapersistentcoughwhileonstage.Thiscouldalltooeasilyhaveresultedinalackofclarityinmymemoryorbecomeamentalbarriertoeffectiveexecution.Fortunatelyforme,thiswasnotmyfirstexperienceplayingwithanorchestraorinfrontofanaudience(ordoingsowhileill),soIwasn’tsuddenlythrownintotheseconcertsnotknowingwhattoexpect.IhavehadagradualdevelopmentontheconcertstagethatfullypreparedmetoaccomplishwhatIdesiredthosenights.
AlargemajorityofmypreparationforthiscareercamefrommystudiesattheUniver-sityofMinnesotawithmyteacher,Distin-guishedMcKnightProfessorLydiaArtymiw.Lydiaisaverysuccessfulconcertpianistandteacher—anartistwhobringsawealthofconcertexperiencesandprofessionalwisdomtoherstudents.ShehasperformedtheRach-maninoffConcertoNo.1frequentlythroughtheyears,withsomeoftheworld’smostdis-tinguishedorchestrasandconductors,suchasSeijiOzawaandtheBostonSymphony.Herknowledgeofthepieceguidedmystudiesof
thisconcertoanditseventualperformance.IarrivedatOrchestraHallfullyprepared,notonlybecauseIhadputinalargeamountofpracticeandcommitmenttothework,butalsobecauseLydiahadguidedmetothatpoint;withoutherteachingIwould
nothavebeenabletohavetheconfidenceIhadwhenIstruckthefirstchordinperformance.
Ihaveaddressedthechal-lengesinherentinaconcertpianist’sduty,buttherearemanyjoysaswell.Thefirst,aboveall,isthethrilltobeabletoplaythegreatest
pianoconcertoswithtoporchestras.Themusiciansthatmakeuptheseensemblesbringacollectiveprofessionalism,intensity,experience,andpassionthattheguestpianistcanfeel.IcouldsensethisfromthemembersoftheMinnesotaOrchestraquiteclearly,anditgreatlyassistedmyperformance.Thetre-mendousjoyofartisticcollaborationisaverymemorablething,andIdefinitelyfeltthisduringeveryminuteonstage.Theothergreataspectofperformanceisthewayitpositivelyaffectstheaudience.Thereisnogreaterjoythanknowingthatyou,bycommunicatingthroughaninstrument,havetouchedmanypeopleinveryindividualways.Eachaudiencememberisunique,andthereforetheytakesomethingawayfromtheperformancethatisalsotheir’salone.WhenIhaveseenandheardthepositivethingsresultingfrommyhardwork,itisthegreatestfeelingintheworld.Toheartheapplauseandtoseetheaudiencestandasavisual‘thankyou’arethrillingencountersofwhichIwillnevertire.Theexhilarationthatisapartofliveperfor-manceissomethingonehastoexperiencefirsthandinordertofullyunderstandandappreciate.Throughmymanyperformances,bothlarge-andsmall-scale,Ihavesoughttodevelopmorefullyasanartistconveyingthebeautiesoftheclassicalmasterpieces.Myrecentperformancessatisfiedthisnever-end-ingjourneyandwerearewardingsumma-tiontoallthatIhaveaccomplishedsofar.InthewordsofmyteacherLydia:onwardsandupwards!

Great collaborations:artistic JourneysInAugust,twoUniversityofMinnesotaSchoolofMusicstudents—RolfHaas(BMcandidate,violin,studentofSallyO’Reilly)andSchulyerTsuda(PhDcandidate,com-position,studentofJamesDillon)—traveledtoSantaFe,NewMexico,totakepartinTheCreativeDialogueComposerWorkshopsponsoredbytheSibeliusAcademyofHel-sinki,Finland.Theyparticipatedinthepro-gramalongwithstudentsfromtheSibeliusAcademy;Yale;UniversityofCalifornia,SanDiego;andtheNewEnglandConservatory. Theworkshop,ledbyFinnishcomposerKaijaSaariahoandFinnishcellistAnssiKarttunen,createdaplatformforcollaborationbetweenyoungcomposersandperformers.
Compositionstudentswereaskedtowriteathree-tonine-minutepieceforanycombi-nationofstringplayers,fromsolotosextet.Thesepieceswerestudiedduringworkshopsbytheperformancestudents,workedonwithbothcoachesandperformedattheconcert.EachstudenthadtheopportunitytohaveaprivatelessonwithSaariaho.

OtherhighlightsoftheprogramincludedarecitalbyKarttunen,acommissionedworkbySaariahoattheSantaFeChamberMu-sicFestival,andtheAmericanpremiereofSaariaho’soperaAdriana MaterattheSantaFeOperaFestival.
Tsudasharedhisthoughtsonthetrip,“TheCreativeDialogueComposerWorkshopwasanincredibleexperience.Typicallyatfestivals,thecomposerhandshispiecetotheperformer,theperformerworksonitonhisown,andthepieceisfinallyplayedinaconcert.
“AttheCreativeDialogueComposerWork-shop,composersandperformersliterallylivedwiththemusic.Sinceweonlyhadaweektoputtogetherthepieces,wewereforcedtocollaborate,compromise,andfindsolutionstoproblemswithoutdestroyingtheintegrityofthemusicorthemusicians.Attimesitwasanintenseexperience.
“Bythesecondorthirdday,Iwascomplete-lyconvincedthatmypiecewouldnotbeperformedatall.Therewereproblemsthatseemedwouldnothavearesolution,butthemorewetalked,themorewediscoveredthattherewerecreativesolutions–solutionsthatIneverwouldhavethoughtofmyself.Whatseemedsodifficultinthebeginningwassoseamlessatthefinalconcertthatitwaslikemagic,andKaija,Anssiandallmyplayersweretothankforthis.Welearnedsomuchfromeachotherandabouteachother,andIfeelthatweformeddeepfriendshipsfromoureffortstounderstandeachotherandsupporteachother’swork.”

The Alchemy Project is a Minnesota non-profit organization that promotes the enrichment of both individual and community health through outstand-ing, multidisciplinary arts programming.

Insummer2007,EmilieSweet(DMA,2008,conducting,studentofKathyRomey)foundedTheAlchemyProject,aMinnesotanon-profitorganizationthatpromotestheenrichmentofbothindividualandcommunityhealththroughmultidisciplinaryartsprogramming.
SweetinvitedUniversityofMinnesotaSchoolofMusicalumniLauraKrider(BM,2001,musiceducation)andKelaWanyama(BM,2002,musiceducation)andstudentKristiBergland(DMAcandidate,voice,studentofGlendaMaurice)tojoinTheAlchemyProjectartisticandorganizationalteam.
TheAlchemyProject’sfirstproject,Fusing with Intenser Fire,exploredtheintersectionbetweenmentalhealthandcreativity.TheyheldfiveconversationeventsontheUniversityofMinnesotacampusthatfocusedonthetopicofmentalhealthandcreativity.Adiversegroupofscholars,artists,healthcareprofessionals,anddistinguishedmembersofthecommunitywereinvitedtojointheconversationastheyinvestigatedtherelationshipbetweenmentalhealthandthecomposer’screativeprocess,thehistoryofmentalillness,society’srelationshipwiththementallyill,madnessasmetaphor,andthedynamicbetweenhealingandnarrative.
Inculminationofthisexploration,theAlchemyProjectpresentedtwoconcerts,includingachoralconcertfeaturingtheUniversityofMinnesotaChamberSingersandtheAlchemyEnsemble,perform-ingpoetryandprosebyauthorswhohavedealtwithmentalhealthissues.Over$1,700wereraisedinthetwoeveningsandalloftheproceedsbenefitedS.A.V.E.,SuicideAwarenessVoicesofEducation.Alchemywassuccessfulinnotonlyraisingawareness,butalsoraisingfundsfortheorganizationtocontinuepost-project.
TheAlchemyProjectlaunchedanannualliterarypublicationthatalsoaddressesthechosenthemetofurtherextendcommunitydia-logue.Throughpoetry,prose,andvisualart,thepublicationallowsforawiderrangeofperspectivesandallowsthedialoguetocontinuelongaftertheperformanceends.ThispublicationisalsopostedonTheAlchemyProjectwebsite,www.alchemyproject.org.
TheAlchemyProject’sinterdisciplinaryperformancesanddiscussioneventsopenedadialogueinourcommunity,andthroughthisdialoguetheyhopetobuildrelationshipsanddiscoverwhatcangrowwhenartisgiventheopportunitytobeavehicleforchange.
