Principal’s Message
Hard Work!
I am very proud of the hard work, perseverance and stamina students in grades 3 – 5 have displayed during our CAASPP (Smarter Balanced) Assessments over the last week.
The concept of perseverance brings to mind a quote from Albert Einstein, “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer”. Perseverance is a nec-essary trait which is possessed by all successful students. Perseverance speaks to a refusal to give up the pursuit of a goal despite difficulties. Students who persevere understand the value of hard work and develop their problem-solving skills. As I walk through testing sessions, I see students very hard at work! These assessments are extremely rigorous and require students to think deeply and apply concepts they have learned. Please take a minute to congratulate your child on their perse-verance.
Speaking of hard work, thanks to the hard work of the students and teachers here at Curran, we are being recognized for our achievement. Our school was chosen by Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and the Campaign for Business and Educa-tion Excellence (CBEE) as a 2016 California Honor Roll recipient! This is a testa-ment to the relentless focus on results that our school has shown over the years and to the hard work of our entire school community. We did not apply for this award (they found us!) and it is a great honor to have been chosen. We will be featured on the Honor Roll website and a banner has been designed for us to hang proudly at our school.

Engineering Night
May 11th will be our third annual Engineering Night.
The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. and will end at 7:00 p.m. Our wonderful
PTA will provide dinner as well. So why have an Engineering
Night? Well, as you know, E. Hale Curran has a STEM focus.
California’s new science standards, which are called the Next Genera-
tion Science Standards or NGSS, integrates engineering. Each grade
span, Kindergarten-2nd and 3rd-5th, have engineering standards that
include asking questions, defining problems, developing sketches,
drawings and models, planning and carrying out tests and analyzing
data. Science helps us to explain phenomena in our natural world
while engineering helps us to solve problems and design and build
systems. Engineers plan, design, test, redesign (sometimes multiple
times) and test again in order to find solutions. Teachers incorporate
science and engineering as a way to challenge and encourage students
to think critically and problem solve. What great life skills to have in
our 21st century world. Please join us for this great family event as we
encourage all of you to build, construct, design and test the many
different activities!
A Note from the Library:
Congratulations to the students who made the 75 point goal in Reading Counts! We had over
200 students attend the game party! We had so many fun board games, puzzles, and electron-
ic devices. Everyone had a fantastic time! We already have over 125 students reach the end of
the year goal of 100 points. Students will earn a dance party. What a fun way to end the
year!
Our Scholastic book fair was a great success! Thank you to Mrs. Hobbs, Mrs. Spedalieri, the
PTA and all of our parent volunteers for their help. We could not put on such an amazing
book fair without you. We challenged the students this year with an estimation game. Our
book fair theme was a “Happy Camper” theme. The students had to estimate how many gum-
my worms were caught! The students with the closest estimation in each grade level are as
follows:
Kindergarten: Rosa Nansen
1st grade: Bryson Bell
2nd grade: Nicholas Tung
3rd grade: Natalia Ramos
4th grade: Kylie Ransom
5th grade: Jaymes Avina and Kaylie Nguyen
Great job estimating!!!
