Rating Process
• Customer rates are applied by the Pricing Department in one of two ways;• Automatic Rating System• Manually – by the Analyst assigned to the account
Applying Rates:
Quality Control:• Periodically, accounts undergo auditing to ensure the correct rates are being applied
both automatically and manually• Analysis of shipment rates relative to their cost are performed to ensure the
profitability of any given account or product grouping
Costing:• Activity Based Costing System retrieves system data and processes it through a PC
based model purchased from an outside provider (TCG)
Weight and Inspection (W&I):• Shipments already in transit are inspected to ensure accuracy of weight and product
description as marked on the shipper’s Bill of Lading, or to ensure proper rating for density based pricing
• Enables proper profiling of customer’s freight and accurate costing
Cargo Claims Process
Objectives:
• Freight inspected at all stages of service• All discrepancies are documented in OASIS operating system• Each terminal is accountable for discrepancies if it’s found they originated from
their location
OS&D Process (Overage, Shortage and Damage):
• Quick decision making and resolution of all loss and damage claims
• Timely notification of decisions to customers
(Target is 45 days at most)
Transportation Process Hubs, Switches and Break-Bulk
Hub and Spoke Operation:
At some hubs, material undergoes cross-docking. This occurs when shipments are unloaded from incoming trailers and loaded directly to outgoing trucks. These hubs are also referred to as break-bulk terminals.
Key TST Overland Express terminals are designed to act as intermediate sorting points for interregional freight. Shipments from various pick-up terminals are sent to a regional break-bulk terminal to be combined into full trailers that are routed to subsequent end-of-line terminals.
Trailers are moved on a nightly schedule between hubs. The designated points where trailers are handed from one driver to another are called switch points.
Request for Pick-Up
• Shipper calls either Customer Service Call Center or local terminal’s dispatch requesting pick-up
• Larger customers have regularly scheduled pick-ups
• Shipment details recorded• Availability confirmed• Pick-ups sorted according to pre-
determined runs
• Dispatcher transmits pick-up information to driver using handheld device.
The Pick-Up• Origin terminal pick-up driver arrives at shipper’s location• Shipment is inspected prior to loading and Bill of Lading is
signed• Freight handled according to ISO registered quality system
procedures• Freight segregated and protected as required to maintain
integrity in transit
• Freight is inspected, counted and verified against documentation during unloading
• Material requiring special handling is segregated for protection• Shipments are either immediately cross-docked to outbound trailers or staged at the appropriate outbound door for consolidation and future loading
• Linehaul trailers intended for long distance transfer between terminal locations are inspected prior to being loaded
• Material is loaded for optimum load factor to linehaul units, ensuring they’re’ properly protected to avoid shifting
Destination Terminal
• Freight is inspected, counted and verified against documentation during unloading.
• Material requiring special handling is segregated for protection
• Freight is staged for loading to local pick-up / delivery (P&D) units for delivery to the consignee.
• Destination terminal’s P&D driver provides courteous delivery service
• Shipment is inspected by consignee prior to signing the delivery receipt
