Principal’s
Message
his week intensive swimming continues and welfare
BBQ Wednesday. This week is yet another busy week
for students and staff. The pace always increases
towards the end of Term 4 and as a result, we often
have very tired cranky children. The hot, humid,
weather last week and our school resembling a
construction zone over the last week do not help this.
This week two teams of workers will be working on
the rooves in an attempt to finish this project more
quickly to reduce the disruption to lessons. Please
support your children in the last few weeks by having
them in bed early and drinking plenty of water rather
than soft drink. Soft drink especially those containing
Caffeine do not rehydrate but make you thirstier. How
can this be true? The commercial shows it will make
me lose weight and run along a beautiful golden sandy
beach showing off my six-pack. Sports drinks are also
very high in salt so should not be given to children. Yes,
I have just done mandatory training on reducing obesity
in children. Parents and students should be aware that I intend for
students to maintain the high standard of effort and
behaviour right up to the last minute of term. Despite
the belief of a few students, it is not the end of term.
The end of term is 3:25pm Friday, 15th December. Thank you to Emily Harper for gently reminding me to
turn on the water chiller for the bubblers. Nothing like
a gentle reminder from a teenager and this was nothing
like a gentle reminder. However, the water is now
cold.
The quality of students at this school is never in doubt.
However, the way they handled the disruptions last
week was exceptional even for them. We had minimal
disruption and students followed instructions perfectly.
Well done to all the students and staff. The
replacement of the rooves is a State government
program rather than school. The old sheets of iron will
be used to construct a fence in the Ag plot so minimal
waste of the product is occurring. These workers
should be hired as rainmakers because we have had
three reasonable falls since they started. The problem
is too late and not enough a statement I heard from my
father many times before harvest. These contractors
are also staying locally and spending money in our
town. This can only be positive.
Observant people would have noticed 200 tonnes of
topsoil on the oval. The plan is to upgrade the oval as
there are parts where the grass is trying to survive on
hard clay or gravel. Eventually I would like the oval to
be of a standard that is the best in the region. I see no
reason why we should not have the best oval in the
region if we have the resources and staff to do so. Our
first step maybe to stop calling it an oval, as it is square.
School planning is well underway for the 2018 school
year. The school priority areas are Literacy &
Numeracy development, building stronger community
partnerships and improving the delivery of Stage 6
subjects through the Western Access Program. The
completed plan will go through another round of staff
and community consultation before it is published in
2018. A plan is not the stone tablets but a set of
directions and goals for the school to work towards.
One of the best qualities of this school is the flexibility
of staff and our ability to change to suit an emerging
need.
Three new staff will be joining us in 2018. Ms Gaye
Rush will be joining us to teach English, Library and
History. Mr Ryan Burley will be joining the Primary
Department and Ms Toni Fitzsimmons will join us as a
Learning Support Teacher. Two of these positions are
additional to our existing staff. An indication of the
strength of this school is the amount of applications we
received for these positions. I am looking forward to
the new energy and ideas three additional staff
members will create. New staff into a town brings with
it guaranteed government money and the financial
multiplier effect is enormous across the town.
The accommodation crisis (yes crisis I have used the
word) will shortly be reduced with The Teacher Housing
Authority starting construction in Brookview Street.
New construction in the town is a sign that this town
has the potential to continue well into the future. For
all those people that doubted a small group of active
people could achieve this project, we have just pushed
over another rubber tree plant. This construction will also
allow teachers to live in the community where they
work. In this newsletter is a community notice encouraging
members of the community to voice their opinion
about the Sunrise mine development. Our newsletter is
effectively the town newspaper and as such, we
regularly print community notices as a service. The
publishing of this community notice does not
necessarily reflect the views of staff, the
Department of Education or myself.
Another great week in Trundle

Secondary
his term is rushing towards completion and I
genuinely cannot believe how much is still going on
at our school. I am also amazed by the positive
behaviour and attitude of our students and staff
during this time. Particularly with the building that
is taking place and its associated disruption they
should all be commended on this. Today our students who are commencing Stage 6
VET courses next year are completing their White
Card training. This is an industry requirement and a
great addition to students’ resumes. Big thank you
to Miss Rowlands on the organisation and delivery
of this. Unfortunately the Super 8s cricket has been
cancelled due to other teams pulling out. A real
pity as under the tutelage of Mrs Morgan, Mr
Southon and Mr Ridges our teams were on the
edge of greatness. Our Year 9 and 10 students are commencing the
mandatory All My Own Work course. This is a Board
of Studies requirement and we are unable to enrol
students into their Year 11 courses without it. Big
thank you to Miss Donovan for her organisation
and delivery. Wednesday we will be having our Welfare BBQ at
school. Students will be receiving their invitations
tomorrow. A massive thank you to Miss Rowlands
for her continual organisation of the welfare
system in secondary. On Thursday we will be having our last Secondary
Assembly of the year. This will take place at
2.30pm. This is a chance for our school and staff to
acknowledge those students who have achieved in
many ways during this semester. Students who are
accompanied by their parents are allowed to leave
school straight after assembly. We are in the process of completing reports.
These should be sent home on Friday (god of the
photocopying machine willing). I have read every
secondary report and as always am astonished at
the thought and effort our staff put into these and I
publicly acknowledge and thank them for this and
their care. If you have any questions in regards to
your child’s report please make an appointment
after Monday next week. Finally next Monday is Presentation night. This is a
major event on our calendar and is a culmination of
the students and staffs’ hard work over the year.
We spend many weeks deciding on the recipients
of each award and there is often extremely robust
debate amongst the staff in regards to this. I look
forward to seeing as many parents and carers who
can make it on the night. Monday will be a mufti-day so that school uniform
can be ready for Presentation night. As always please feel free to contact me at school
for any clarification.

Year 10 Work Experience This week two Year 10 students will be attending
work experience. Sasha Karaitiana will be working
at the Parkes Veterinary Clinic whilst Brooke
Morgan will gain experience as a beautician in
Orange. The girls will find this a very valuable
opportunity and help them determine if these are
occupations, they could see themselves gaining
employment in the future.

Parkes Shire Council Art Project
for the Trundle Community The Parkes Shire Council is funding
a community art project for Trundle to produce
a collaborative art piece for the town. I have
volunteered to coordinate this project, with
support from a small committee and the
Trundle and District Progress Association. The
shire will fund the cost of the artwork
production, and provide a small amount for art
resources for the workshops.
The council's intention is for our community to
create a local artwork that is visually appealing,
interesting for visitors and locals, and reflective
of the vibe of Trundle. The artwork will be
developed in the form of a 'Plus sign', with
chosen images digitally reproduced on 9
metal panels 700mm square. The overall height
and width of the 'Plus sign' is 3500 mm, and it
will be hung in a appropriate place in town,
where it can be clearly viewed. The panels can
be in the form of photographs, or artworks. The
project committee will choose the final pieces
for 6 of the 9 panels; the remaining 3 panels will
be solid colour panels. If you are interested in
what the final work might look at, there is
already a 'Plus sign' hanging in Church St in
Parkes, and one in Peak Hill.
I am voluntarily organising 3 free workshops for
the following dates for any interested budding
artists. You don't have to feel nervous that you
can't "draw" in order to participate- come with
some ideas and have a go! I would love to see
all ages represented at the workshops, and the
final works will be chosen from the
workshop creations, as well as entries from
any individual artists.
Sunday 10am-2pm 19th November
Sunday 10am-2pm 17th December
Sunday 10am-2pm 14th January
The workshops are free, and the venue is yet to
be announced.
Anyone interested in participating in the
workshops must RSVP so that resources can be
provided.
Looking forward to some interesting ideas,

From Your Community Nurse … Child Safety on Farms – Part 3
11/17
Legal obligations of the people in agriculture production enterprisesWHS laws are similar in all states in that they lay down theresponsibilities of key parties involved in reducing risk of injury andillness associated with work.
Australian Centre for Agricultural Health & Safety, Safe Work Australia or
Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation
web pages for more information.
Teaching Children SafetyThe following suggestions illustrate ways to foster safe learning about farm life. These are not specificrecommendations, but examples which might be applied to the farm environment generally. They are anattempt to integrate understanding of child development and OHS management.
Upper primary – school leaving ageGenerally:-• Judgement/concentration skills, size and age need to be considered to determine maturity for tasks• Set and regularly reinforce clear and consistent rules, especially for activities with serious consequences• Encourage participation in ‘farm safety walks’ with adults. Discuss specific hazards, consequences and
reasons for rules. Allow input to increase understanding, ownership and responsibility for improving unsafebehaviour/situations. Use positive reinforcement to build esteem and value the child’s opinion
• Discuss ways to deal with situations where the child may feel pressured/motivated (by family or friends) toengage in risky behaviour
• MODEL and INTEGRATE safety. Lead by example and incorporate safe practice when teaching routine farmproduction processes
For upper primary age• Play in designated safe areas. Always ask an adult before going outside the safe play area• Keep away from water bodies/work areas/livestock and identified farm hazards unless actively supervised by
an adult• Always wear a hat and sunscreen outside. Always wear helmets riding pushbikes, horse and two wheel eg:-
motorbikes (and under adult supervision). Never ride as a passenger on machinery, ute trays or on quadbikes. “No fooling around” rules eg:- with bikes, horses and when friends visit (discuss why)
• Gradual increase in ability to perform far tasks – but still requires close supervision due to risk taking, clumsiness and ease of distraction.
• Can perform some tasks completely with adequate training and supervision (eg:- ride motorbikes, hose, nowlawn, small power tools, handling/assisting with animals, vegetable garden responsibility)
• Teach basic first aid skills – how to respond to specific situations – how/who to get help from in an emergencyFor lower – middle secondary age• Gradually increase farm tasks as competency is demonstrated• Can learn/assist with basic and routine workshop machinery maintenance and livestock handling with active
adult supervision and training• Teach to follow standard safety and hygiene instructions when using tools, equipment or non mobile
agricultural machinery, under supervision and in accordance with OHS requirements• Extend first aid capabilities to include CPR and specific injury responses• Encourage practice of skills in identifying potential problems and risk associated with an activity/situation and
problem solving – DO NOT RELY on these to protect the child
