Hello Friends,
Just last week, we reached our 6 month anniversary! Happy Anniversary ~ and here is to celebrating many more anniversaries
together!
The Summer 10 @ 10 has been an absolute joy filled and fun
time! We have seen between 60 and 70 folks out each Sunday for worship (and it didn't hurt to have refreshments or treats
either)! This experience of worship provided opportunity for bonds and relationships to blossom! We are ever so blessed!
THANK YOU!
September will soon be upon us and there will be much to do and lots going on! There will be familiar things and there may be
some new and different things for us to experience. I hope that, whatever it is, you will at least give it a try!
Heather and I in the office and Dianne Shapton and I in the
Sunday School have done some much needed 'house cleaning' over the summer that will help for a fresh, bright start too!
Back to Church Sunday will be September 11th at 10:30 a.m. Invitations are available for you to deliver to invite a friend or a
neighbour to church or someone who needs that special touch to return back to us. So, please, pick up one (or more) invitations
to deliver and we will celebrate being back together in the sanctuary that day. Also.... rumour has it that there will be
coffee available at the Andrew Street entrance before service! Fill a cup or your travel mug and enjoy coffee as we worship! And
after service.... Sunday School will be serving up ice cream sundaes! What better way to celebrate the beginning of a new
year together than with sundaes on Sunday!
Open Arms, Open Hearts, Open Spirit Together, we can make these words and this statement a reality!
Blessings
Rev. Laurie

September - a time of new beginnings. In that vein,
the Board has begun the process of reviewing our Church’s Constitution and policies to ensure that they
are up-to-date and reflect the workings of the church.
In addition, at last year’s General Council, the United
Church of Canada proposed a total of eight remits that
will be voted on by pastoral charges and/or Presbyteries with deadlines set in 2017/2018. Pastoral
charges, through their Boards/Councils, will need to deal with five of these remits. We are in the early
stages of discussion on these and the congregation will hear more in the coming weeks and months. (Remit:
the process used to consider suggested changes for how the United Church functions).
More importantly, the arrival of the Almajarish family gives us a perfectly tangible way to continue to live out
our mission of Open Arms, Open Hearts, Open Spirit.
We, as a Board, are committed to the life and work of
Exeter United Church. We are here representing each and every one of you..... that is a task that can only be completed with your comments, your ideas and your input, the
positive and the negative.

OUTREACH CORNER
Update re Almajarish Family Sponsorship There must be great excitement in Amman Jordan as the Almajarish family now knows that we are waiting to welcome them to their new safe, comfortable home in Exeter. They will travel for 24 hours via Cairo, and will arrive at Toronto Airport at 7:25 p.m. on Tuesday August 16. Ellison Travel and Exeter Toyota are donating vans for the trip to the airport and back to 309 Andrew Street. Patty Brintnell has introduced us to an Occasional Teacher at Exeter Elementary School who speaks Arabic and lives in Mitchell. He has agreed to volunteer his time as the interpreter for Arrival Day and the trip back to Exeter, and he seems keen to be involved as needed. Eastlink has donated a year of Cable/Internet/Phone services to the family and will be installing the connections before arrival day. The house is ready and waiting. George Finch has kept the lawn looking great since Spring and will teach Ibraheem to do the job for the rest of the summer. The stocking of the kitchen can begin soon with Dorothy Henderson handling that job for which she is well qualified. The children will have a few weeks to adjust before school begins and Exeter Elementary School is aware that they are coming. A few opportunities to sub-lent the house for weekends or longer periods have worked out recently but the wait has been a drain on our bank account and donations are still being gratefully accepted to ensure that we can support the Almajarish family until August 2017. Please keep the Almajarish family in your prayers as they travel across the world and prepare for their lives to change forever. Susanne & Dianne
We are so thankful to our church and community members who have contributed $30,000 to our fund-raising campaign to bring the Almajarish family to Exeter and support them for 12 months. The cost of holding the house so that it would be ready whenever they arrived has been almost $10,000 so we will need to revive our fundraising efforts now that we know the 12 months begins on Tuesday Aug. 16. Please consider making a donation to Exeter U.C. – Refugee Fund to help us change 5 lives forever by giving them a safe home and caring community. SHUKRAN! (Thankyou!)
Collective Kitchen will resume on Monday,
September19 from 6:00
-9:00 pm. Come out
and cook with us, meet
some new people and
take home 3 dishes to
share with your family.
Cost is $5.00. For more
information call the
office.
Our Benevolent Fund
has helped more than 50 families with groceries
this year. The care packages with toiletries
and personal care items are gratefully
appreciated. Donations
of shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, razors,
toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper and feminine
hygiene products can be dropped off at the office.
Thanks for your support!
Our next date to host the Free
Community Meal is Sunday, October
16th, 2016. Come out, join us for dinner and meet
some of the people from our community. For more
information on how you can be involved call the

CHURCH NEWS
From your Worship and Music Team
To Greet or not to Greet? To Read or
not to Read? Got your attention? We NEED to update our Reader and
Greeter lists and we NEED your help. All families included. We would like to
know whether you would like to be
added to or omitted from our calling
lists for Readers and Greeters. You can choose to be on only one list or
both. Please let us know by phone, 519-235-1900, email,
[email protected] or by dropping a note in our Worship and Music
mailbox outside the office. Those who are currently greeting and/or reading
and wish to continue need do nothing (unless your number has changed),
we know who you are and say
THANKS for being an important part
of worship every Sunday. We look forward to hearing from you SOON as
our caller Susan is currently working
on our fall schedule. Ultimately, we would love a reply from ALL our
church families letting us know your availability to GREET and/or READ
scripture on Sundays. Other Worship and Music news: Our
fall line-up looks great with Rev.
Laurie headlining from the pulpit for
September and early October, Wendy Noble pitching in for our Anniversary
Service on October 23 and David Burghardt closing out on October 30
while Rev. Laurie is away. Rev. Laurie returns for early November
until November 20 when David Burghardt provides relief again.
Believe it or not, Sunday, November 27th is the first Sunday of Advent.
Enjoy the warm weather now!
A busload of UCW members and friends
had lunch at the Crossroads restaurant near Elmira and then attended the play "Anything
Goes" in St. Jacobs on May 25. On June 6, three of our members participated in a
CAMPSITE EXPERIENCE at Camp
Bimini. Janice Dunbar from the "Social Research and Planning Council of United Way
of Huron Perth" presented us with information on a "LIVING WAGE" for a family in Huron-
Perth. One point to be considered was that a resident living on a rural setting needs a
vehicle to go to work whereas a resident in Stratford may be able to use public
transportation. Lack of bus service is a problem. She gave us great insight into the
financial needs of people in Huron-Perth. Worship, music and a delicious potluck
luncheon were enjoyed. The Camp Bimini director, Carol, reported on the successful
progress and full camping schedule of the
camp which we support financially.
Eight of our members enjoyed a
memorable day at the UCW event at Siloam United on July 16. The theme was. "It Only
Takes a Spark". We learned that this hymn was written in 20 minutes when the author
was inspired by watching the dying embers of a fire and how one could ignite kindling. She
gave us many ideas about inspiring our faith and sharing it with others. We just need to
find the "spark" to enhance our faith and other people's. The salad luncheon was
delicious as always. In the afternoon we were further inspired by the Thames Centre Choir.
UCW Executive Meeting for Huron-Perth
Presbytery is at Camp Bimini on Monday, September 19 at 9: 00 am.

VISTA Are you ready? Orders start again on
September 11. The Board set a goal of
$5,000.00 again this year and at the end of
June, $2,400.00 was transferred to the General
Account. We took advantage this year of the
Summer order that VISTA has. They close in
the summer as most of their clients are schools
that don’t operate in the summer but are open
for one week in July. A number of you
participated in the order this summer so we will
probably do it again next year.
So far this year, we have sold 708 cards with a
face value of $72,570.00. This has given the
Church an income of $2,604.80. With the
payment of Bank fees, our bank balance at the
end of July is $223.31.
If you have never participated in this program, it
is never too late to start. You order the cards
you want and pay the face value of those cards.
You get to spend that face value when you
receive your cards. When the order goes in, a
percentage of each card is retained by the
church. The corporate offices of the stores
accepting the cards, provides this funding as a
thank you for your support in the community.
If you have any questions as to how to get
involved in the program, please call Carol Brisbin
at 519-297-2011 or see me after Church in the
Andrew St. entrance.
PASTORAL CARE
Do you know of someone in our congregation who is
no longer able to participate as fully as they once did
and who would welcome a friendly visit or telephone
call on an occasional or regular basis? The Pastoral
Care Team is pleased to respond to requests of this
nature or, in the event of a family emergency or sudden
illness please let the office know, 519-235-0860.
