Did you know that the average life cycle of a truffle- producing tree is 30 years?
Like all mushrooms, the lack of chlorophyll in truffles result in the reliance on trees or shrubs for survival. The two organisms, the truffle and the tree or shrub, exchange substances mutually through the roots.
As truffles are underground fungi, hence unable to disperse the spores via wind; evolution has therefore equipped them with a strong smell, perceptible only when they reach maturation. This smell attracts insects and mammals that feed on truffles and as a result, aid in the dispersion of the spores.
Until today, truffle hunters or trifolao work together with their dogs which after being trained, are able to find truffles by detecting the distinctive smell through their keen noses.
