Trailer Research Summary and conventions
The order
Just like films, trailers will also have some type of order. It will usually start of with an equilibrium, which is the happy part of it. Then it will go into the disequilibrium which will be some type of disaster and it
will end with the climax of the disaster.
You won't get to see the new equilibrium as that will be revealed in the actual film.
It ends with the climax to make the audience anticipate what's going to happen, and therefore will want to go and watch the film.
Krampus
Equilibrium- in the first two screenshots we see the Christmas spirit and everyone enjoying themselves.Disequilibrium- In the last two, we see the family discover the evil and them being haunted by it.
Equilibrium- in the first two screenshots we see the men planning what they are going to do.Disequilibrium- In the last two, we see them actually carrying their operation/mission.
Mission Impossible
Timing
Trailers will usually last for 2-3 minutes. The most
common would be two and a half. This is so that they leave enough mystery for the audience to actually
want to go and watch the film.
Trailers- Sinister 2 and Vacation
AudioThe non diegetic music played will tend to be happy and uplifting in the beginning during the equilibrium. However, during the disequilibrium, the music will become more tense. This is to
help the audience engage with the mood of the film.
Titles
The titles will match the genre of the film. The first one is from 'Vacation' which is a comedy and that is reflected in the bright colours. 'Sinister', The second one, is a horror and
'Demolition' is a mystery/thriller.
EditingAt the beginning, the pace will usually be slow and it will coincide with the music. As the
disequilibrium starts to occur, it will become more fast pace which will enhance the intensity of the music. So the music and editing work together to create the atmosphere
for the audience.
InspirationAfter watching some A2 coursework and actual trailer, I have a better idea of what a trailer
is meant to show to the audience, and how to create an atmosphere for them related to the genre.
The main thing that inspired me was the titles; at what point I should add them in, and for them to relate to the genre.
Another thing was that how the music and the editing need to reflect each other, and most importantly the genre itself
