Benefits and featuresOpen protocol:Enables another panel or other devices to be added toan installation to help future maintenance planningand cost control (note: it is not possible to mix withproducts which have a unique or closed protocol).
Digital transmission:Anatec Pro protocol translates device informationdigitally, so is less susceptible to corruption than ananalogue transmission system.
Loop drive capacity:Rated at 500mA (highly stable) to accommodate ahigh number of loop-powered sounders/devices.
Strength of processing power:Up to 126 addresses per loop may be configuredthrough cause and effect programming. Each loop isdriven by a separate processor to prevent completefailure in the unlikely event of a processing devicebreakdown.
Device recognition:Panel ‘Loop learn’ facility automatically identifiesnewly installed devices.
Device sensitivity modes, ’Pro Discovery’:A change to building use may require a change in theoperational function of the detection devices. Fivedifferent operating modes can be set according to thedemands of the premises. For example, it is possible toprogramme a timed changeover between heat andsmoke detection at selected times.
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) & 32 zone indicators:A 4 line 20 character back lit LCD gives device details;address, zone and type status through to location text.Fire and fault LEDs localize to the zone.
Input – output flexibility:Up to 255 user definable inputs. Relay and two stagealarm outputs options available via expansion boards.
Sounder control programming:Complex patterns can be programmed to suitmodified escape routing or use of the building.Changes can be set from the panel including theisolation or disabling of a zone or an alarm etc.
Panel construction & installation:‘Pro Discovery’ panels have trim options in stainlesssteel or brass. Cabling to the panel is convenientthrough top and bottom access or rear knockouts.
Panel programming:Software tools including ‘cause and effect’ setup canbe applied from a laptop PC. User or Engineers menuis accessible via coded access panel controls.
Anatec Pro System – loop load calculator:Our sales engineers use software to check loadingcalculations, including battery standby capabilities, when preparing a scheme.
Installed system test:One person is able to test system devices includingsilent alarm test. Please refer to the operating manualor contact ‘Fire technical sales’ for further information.
The Anatec Pro family comprises a 1-2 loop basepanel (Anatec Pro Explorer – FADYXP prefix) anda 1, 2 or 4-loop high specification panel (AnatecPro Discovery – FADY prefix).
Anatec Pro Explorer is compatible with AnatecFA95 protocol devices and Anatec Discovery Prowith both Anatec FA95 and Discovery devices.

Technical specification
Networking capabilityWith the addition of a network card, the panels can be used as part of a global system with the facility to controland monitor a large networked site. Network cause/effect may be programmed between Anatec Pro 1-2 loop panels,1-4 loop panels and active repeater panels. The system operates as a global communication system and does notrequire a master panel or computer. This approach reduces the cost and avoids the problem of a total networkfailure associated with master panel configuration. Up to 15 panels or 60 loops may be used to create a network. Each panel can act independently and be programmed to respond selectively to other panels on the network.
The network card uses RS485 data communications, which will transmit up to 2km. Compact network repeaterpanels providing all essential control, and display facilities are available for manned control points.
Sounder control functions:Complex sounder control functions can be set fromthe panel including:
Individual sensitivity settings for each device
A phased evacuation facility
Adjustable contamination levels

FunctionsAnatec-Lite panels have extensive programmablefunctions including:
Zone programming – to confirm a true state of fireZones can be programmed for three sets ofcircumstances to control sounding of fire alarms.
A zone: No action on the first detected alarm, unless there is a signal from another zoneconfirming a fire
B zone: The first detected alarm will be indicated, but a full fire condition will be flagged only whena detector signal from the same zone givesconfirmation
C zone: The panel enters a fire condition on thefirst detected alarm, but certain outputs areinhibited until the fire is confirmed from a secondsource
Day/night (building occupied/unoccupied) functionAllows the panel’s operational characteristics to bechanged at a pre-determined time. For example, fromthe engineers menu changes can be made to detectorsensitivity (high/low) & zone dependency settings.
Delay period function – to allow system investigationProgramable for time period, the zone(s) it applies toand whether or not it operates in day or night mode.
SoftwareSophisticated sounder group mapping andcomplex cause and effect scenarios can be easilyimplemented using the intuitive upload-download programming software.
Networking capabilityThe system can support eight interconnected panelsover a two-wire RS485 network. Single loop 16 zonepanels and 1 & 2 loop 32 zone panels may benetworked together. Any main panel can connect upto four repeaters. Up to 1 km of cable may be fittedto a network system.
Each networked panel can be programmed to:
Accept Faults from other panels
Accept Fires from other panels
Accept Control actions such as silence controlsounder, silence alarm sounders and reset fromother panels
Accept Disablement commands for zones, sounders and output sets from other panels
(Each of these four functions may be individuallyselected.)
All panels monitor all other panels for network wiringfaults. Fires on remote panels are displayed in detailon a local panel including the point description of theorigin of the alarm. Faults on remote panels aredisplayed in detail on a local panel including the pointdescription in the case of a detector.
Cause and effect can be programmed into a localpanel dependent on which remote panel is in alarm. The network supports programming of siteinformation into remote panels from a PC connectedat a local panel. Time and date is common to allpanels throughout the network.
All panels connected to the network need a networkdriver card.

With cutting edge design and improved performance, Anatec FA95 analogue addressable fire detectorsoffer many benefits to installers and users alike. The low profile device package employs a zeroinsertion force base, a user-friendly addressing methodology and extended data and alarm features.
Key features of Anatec FA95: Address Confirmation
Automatic Type Identification
Interrupt warning – for call-point speed of response
Analogue value reporting
Input bits reporting
Address card for simple user friendly and accurateidentification of detector location
Anatec FA95 Device Flag
Detector optionsThe detector range includes optical smoke and temperature sensors, and a multi-sensor device combining elementsof both.
Optical sensor operation:Smoke particles entering the chamber will scatter light from an internal LED onto a photo diode. Internal electronicsmeasures the voltage level from the photo diode and translates this into a digital signal which is sent to the CIE atthe next interrogation. The detector is calibrated using a digital count (equivalent to an analogue voltage) for cleanair and will flag an alarm when the count value exceeds 55 (the equivalent level at which smoke particles are presentabove a given threshold).
Heat sensor operation:A thermistor is used to measure temperature. The electronic network in the device generates a voltage levelproportional to the air temperature adjacent.
A standard manual call point is available. Other essential loop devices comprise isolators (including isolator base),loop powered sounders & sounder beacons and beam detectors. For connecting external devices a range ofcompatible interface units are available: input/output, zone monitors, sounder circuit controllers etc. Many devicesand interfaces are available with in-built isolators providing excellent loop integrity.

Discovery is a powerful, intelligent, digital communication protocol, developed specifically to cater formodern day application requirements. Three different modes of operation are available: Normal, Readand Write. This enables an extensive exchange of information between the loop devices and the panel.
NORMAL MODE: is identical to Anatec FA95 but with somepowerful extensions for mode selection and detectorsensitivity drift warning.
READ MODE: allows loop device information, such asinstallation and servicing data, to be read by the controlpanel.
WRITE MODE: enables the control panel to writeinformation to the loop device, such as detector responsemode.
Detector optionsThe detector range includes optical smoke andtemperature sensors, a multi-sensor device with aprogrammable combination of optical and heatdetection, and a carbon monoxide detector.
A standard surface mounted call point is available.Other essential loop devices comprise isolators(including isolator base), loop powered sounders &sounder beacons. For connecting external devices arange of compatible interface units are available:input/output, zone monitors, sounder circuitcontrollers etc. Many devices and interfaces areavailable with in-built isolators providing excellentloop integrity.
Detector features and benefitsDrift compensation – smoke detectorAs the sensor output changes in time owing tocontamination such as dust, the signal processor willcompensate for this to retain sensitivity.
Heat detectionFull rate of rise (R-o-R) processing for heat detector.
Transient rejectionLow sensitivity to very rapid changes in sensor outputminimizing false alarms.
Response modesOne of five settings can be programmed from thepanel. A smoke detector can be set for a particularsmoke threshold while a heat detector the fixed leveland rate of rise sensitivity can adjusted.

Interface modules for intelligent fire detection and alarm systemsAn analogue fire system is usually designed with a number of loops, each beginning and ending at thefire panel. The integrity of loop wiring is vital for data transmission, where a short circuit between loopwires would be very serious. Hence it is necessary to have isolating circuits positioned in the loop inorder to isolate any section containing a short circuit, until the fault is rectified.
The isolator detailed here is polarity sensitive and will normally switch out the negative arm of the loop, when ashort circuit is sensed.
Normally the isolator allows current flow in both directions. If the loop voltage falls beneath a preset threshold theisolator will switch open to isolate the incoming and outgoing lines. The device will test the isolated sectionregularly and will reconnect when the fault is cleared.
Isolating devices are provided either as standalone products or integral within many interfaces, detection or sounderunits. Interfaces with integral isolators and detectors fitted to isolating bases will stay operational when the adjacentsection of loop is isolated. The isolating unit, when isolating, will display a yellow fault indication LED.
It is good practice for devices wired between two isolators to be located in the same zone.

The Emergi-Fire Sensa control panel operatingwith Apollo Alarmsense devices is an advancedand cost-effective 2-wire fire system for small tomedium-sized buildings. System flexibilityenables use in applications such as ‘dwellingsand in houses of multiple occupation’ (HMO)and distributed buildings using a proven andextensive networking capability.
In summary this is a flexible, reliable and costeffective fire detection system that is easy to installand extend.
Eurofire Sensa panelsEurofire Sensa panels are designed to comply with theEuropean Standard EN54 Parts 2 and 4 and aresuitable for BS 5839-1:2002 and BS 5839-6:2004installations.
Panels are available in 4, 8, 12 or 16 zones of firedetection cover, with powerful and flexible setup, control and display capabilities.
AlarmSense devicesAlarmSense devices (detectors, manual call points, sounders, sounder beacons and alarm relays) aredesigned to operate normally on the same pair ofzone wires from the panel. A key feature is that alarmsounders can be programmed to operate as so-called‘priority’ or ‘non-priority’ devices.
The principle of priority andnon-priority responseIn a Sensa system, the nominal operating voltage is12 volts, which enables AlarmSense detectors andmanual call points (MCPs) to operate. Sounders andbeacons operate at 24 volts, so remain dormant at thisstage. When a detector or MCP is activated, the panelwill register a change and will take the zone voltageup to 24 volts, which will switch the sounders on.
A ‘priority’ set device reacts as a normal sounder instandard use and sounds a full alarm. A ‘non-priority’set device will give an initial local alert prior to goinginto full alarm.
AlarmSense sounder and sounder beacon bases arechangeable between ‘priority’ and ‘non-priority’ modes.
‘Non-priority’ devices are intended for use in HMOtype applications where there are a number ofindividual dwellings. The operating method isintended to help reduce the instances of unwantedalarms and give a local warning before the fullalarm/evacuation.
A sounder-beacon base (with a detector on the baseseat) when set to ‘non-priority’, will sound a local alertfor 2 minutes at that locality. People in the vicinity oroccupants in the dwelling will be the first warned of apossible fire situation or false alarm. They will have2 minutes to investigate and rectify a false alarm,
(i.e. heat or fumes from cooking). After 2 minutes, ifthe detector is still activated, the Eurofire panel willgo into a full fire situation. At any time during thealert period, if another device is activated, the systemgoes into a full fire situation.
Eurofire can be programmed to react to ‘non-priority’signals in one of two ways:
The panel sends out a ‘non-priority’ pattern to thezone, which causes only the sounder on theactivated detector to sound, or
The panel sends out a ‘non-priority’ pattern to allzones, which have been set to include ‘non-priority’ devices. This will cause any local response(LR) devices set as ‘non-priority’ to also sound –no other ‘non-priority’ devices will sound.
If another device of any type or a ‘priority/non-priority’ is activated during the alert period, thesystem goes into a full fire alarm condition.
A ‘non-priority’ alert cannot be generated if thesystem is already in a fire alarm condition.
When a heat detector is attached on a sounder orsounder beacon base, we recommend that thesounder be set as a ‘priority’ device.

Programming non-priority detectorsfor local alarm operationThe diagram below illustrates a 2-storey block containing3 flats and an entrance lobby. A Eurofire panel controlsthe fire alarm system for all 3 flats. Manual call points aresituated in the lobby and along the corridors. Sounderdetector bases are situated throughout with a separatesounder adjacent to the fire panel.
Scenario 1 – ‘Non-priority’ detector in Flat 1activates owing to fumes from cooking
The base sounder above the detector will sound for 2minutes (alerting the occupants in flat 1).
The sounder beacon (Zone 8) next to the panelactivates, if it is programmed for local response (LR).The occupant has time to expel the smoke from thedetector vicinity.
During this period, the panel indicates ‘Zone 1 LocalAlert’, and sounds the buzzer in the control panel. Theresponsible person has time to investigate the alertand act accordingly. If any detector or MCP activatesduring the alert, the system goes into a full firesituation and sounds the alarm.
After the alert period, with fumes dispersed, the panelwill return to the quiescent state. If the detectorremains activated after the alert period, the panel willgo into a full fire alarm condition.
Scenario 2 – Non-priority detector in Flat 1 isactivated as a real fire condition
The sequence is the same as in the first scenario, untilthe 2-minute alert period is over. After the alertperiod, with a real fire, the detector remains activatedand the panel will go into a full fire alarm condition.
Scenario 3 – Detector or MCP is activated as a fire
The panel goes into a full fire situation. If a ‘non-priority’ detector is activated afterwards – the paneltreats this as a normal detector being activated in afire situation.

Eurofire Sensa 2-wire fire panels Benefits and featuresComprehensive zone coverage:Available in 4, 8, 12 or 16 zonemodels.
Zone capacity:Nominally 30 devices per zone.
Soft select:Non-latching or latching zones:The non-latching zone featureallows a better integrityconnection to existing systems(other manufacture). This preventslockout and allows panels to bereset more readily (the panelbeing connected to must have aspare zone and auxiliary contactswith a volt-free pair). Short circuitfire or fault for older systems.
Output wiring:2-wire configuration to the zones, giving reduced wiring cost.
Outputs:4 alarm outputs and auxiliary volt-free contacts, which areprogrammable for continuous, pulsing or delayed operation.Fault volt-free relay contacts.
Sounder delay activation:Eurofire includes a sounder ‘delay-on’ facility. This allows the user toprogramme chosen sounders orbeacons to activate at a latermoment. This is suited toapplications where it is beneficialnot to have undue panic, such asin bars or Soft Play centres.
2-wire and 4-wire systemintegration:The Eurofire system has the abilityto recognise and operate a 4-wirezone, which can potentially save onwiring when a refurbishment isundertaken. For example in a smallhotel or guesthouse where nosounders or sounder-beacons arefitted in bedrooms, a bedroom zonecan be the 2-wire format, withdetectors and alarms wired on thesame pair. Other existing 4-wirezones in the building can remain ifdesired (it will be necessary to checkfor sounder tone compatibility).
Networking capability:Coverage in larger buildingcomplexes can be achieved bylinking Eurofire EN54 panels andrepeaters together via a ‘CANConnect’ link. It is also possible tomake more power available forsounder circuits, or save on fieldwiring.
Eurofire Sensa is a range of conventional (non-addressable) firedetection panels with extensive safety, technical and practicalfeatures for the installer and user. Eurofire Sensa panels aredesigned to comply with the European Standard EN54 Parts 2 and 4and are suitable for BS 5839-1:2002 and BS 5839-6:2004installations.
Panels are available in 4, 8, 12 or 16 zones of fire detection cover, withpowerful and flexible setup, control and display capabilities and areconfigured to operate with Apollo AlarmSense devices.
The 2-wire convention uses one pair of wires for the connection of Sensa-compatible devices (detectors, manual call points and alarm sounders). Thisgives the scheme designer a greater flexibility of choice, whilst retainingcompliance with the relevant standards. Benefits can be seen in havingreduced field wiring costs and time saving with ease of installation.
Panels are supplied as a complete package, with all end of line devices, batteries and a logbook included.
Eurofire Sensa 2-wire panels | Conventional
Panel DisplayThe Eurofire Sensa panel includes an easy to reference display with LCD screen allowing for up to four lines of text, with text programmable for each zone. 6 buttons are included on the front of the panel which can be used to accessthe following functions:
Lamp test, silence alarms, silence buzzer
User zone, sounder and 2-wire sounder isolation
Walk and alarm test facility with mute option
99-event history log that stores any events withtime and date stamp, for the user to scroll
Configurable system message for the user withnormal time and date displayed
The panel also features indicator LEDs which advisethe current state of the fire detection system, and givea clear signal of fire or fault in any particular zone.
Further functionality includes the facility to reviewevent logs, to override any pre-set alarm delays, andto enable sounding the evacuation to all zones.

Networking capabilityFire detection coverage in a larger building complex can be achieved by linking Eurofire EN54 panels and repeaterstogether via a ‘CAN Connect’ link. (‘CAN Connect’ is a readily available communications protocol.) It is also possibleto make more power available for sounder circuits (additional 4), or save on field wiring:
Indicator detailsThe panel includes indicators for information, fault, fire and ‘fire & fault’, whereby specific panel LEDs will illuminateor flash to establish the zone affected.
Scenario: In abuilding, one panelmight be sited in theoffice area and onein the warehousearea. The zones foreach area are wiredto their respectivepanels. Network thepanels and theoffice unit has fullvisibility of thebuilding. It may benecessary to use ahigher rated cableand the Emergi-Litenetwork card (pleasecontact Technicalsales for furtherguidance).

Notes:
1 Total panel alarm current, is total zone alarm current + total sounder current on AL1 & AL2. Total should not exceed 1A.
2 Ensure that maximum number of sounders/sounder-beacon devices does not exceed total current allowed for zones.30 sounders on a zone = 5mA * 30 = 0.15A. Zone supplying maximum current, no more sounders/sounder-beacons should be placed on zone.16 sounder-beacons on a zone = 9mA * 16 = 0.144A. Zone supplying maximum current, no more sounders/sounder-beacons should be placed on the zone.Sounders and sounder-beacon devices can be used together on a zone but should not exceed the maximum alarm current per zone.

AlarmSense devices | Conventional
AlarmSense devices
AlarmSense devices (detectors, manual call points, sounders, sounder beacons and alarm relays) aredesigned to operate normally on the same pair of zone wires from the panel. A key feature is thatalarm sounders can be programmed to operate as so-called ‘priority’ or ‘non-priority’ devices.
A ‘priority’ set device reacts as a normal sounder instandard use and sounds a full alarm. A ‘non-priority’set device will give an initial local alert prior to goinginto full alarm.
‘Non-priority’ devices are intended for use in HMO typeapplications where there are a number of individualdwellings. The operating method is intended to helpreduce the instances of unwanted alarms and give alocal warning before the full alarm/evacuation.
When a heat detector is attached on a sounder orsounder beacon base, we recommend that the sounderbe set as a ‘priority’ device.
For more information about priority/non-prioritydevices, please refer to pages 36 – 37.

Eurofire 4-wire fire panels
Traditionally, conventional fire systems have been wired as ‘4-wire’installations, where the detection and alarm devices are wiredseparately from the panel. This does give some integral protectionwhere the alarm circuit would not be affected by a fault on thedetection side.
Eurofire EN54 is a conventional (non-addressable) fire detection systemwith enhanced safety, technical and practical features for the installer anduser. Eurofire EN54 panels are designed to comply with the EuropeanStandard EN54 Parts 2 and 4 and are suitable for BS 5839-1:2002 andBS 5839-6:2004 installations.
Panels are configured to operate with ‘4-wire’ detection and alarm devicesand are available as a standalone panel for 4, 8, 12 or 16 zones of firecover, ideal for medium sized premises. Alternatively, for larger installationsEurofire can be networked with sister Eurofire panels and repeaters forcomplete cover over the site.
Panels are supplied as a complete package, with all end of line devices, batteries and a logbook included.
Benefits and featuresThe panel has an extensive arrayof useful tools and featuresdesigned to help both the installerto set up the system easily and theuser to manage the systemeffectively.
Standby duration:48 hours
Zone capacity:Up to 30 devices per zone.
Soft select:Non-latching or latching on fire:The non-latching zone featureallows a better integrityconnection to existing systems(other manufacture). This methodwill monitor the interconnectionbetween panels and allow panelsto be reset more readily (thepanel being connected to, musthave a spare zone and alarm lineor auxiliary contacts with avolt-free pair). Short circuit fire orfault for older systems.
Security control:Coded push button entry:The status viewer has quick entry atlevel 1. Levels 2 and 3 are passwordprotected for the authorised userand Engineer respectively.
Outputs:4 Programmable Alarm outputs.Fire auxiliary volt-free relaycontacts, which are programmablefor continuous, pulsing anddelayed operation. Fault volt-freerelay contacts.
Output wiring:Conventional 4-wire to the zones.
2-wire zone selection:In instances, where it is desired torun a zone of 2-wire devices, thepanel can be programmed toachieve this by a trainedcommissioning engineer.
Sounder delay activation:A sounder ‘delay-on’ facilityallows the user to programmechosen sounders or beacons toactivate at a later moment. Idealwhere it is beneficial not to haveundue panic, such as in bars orSoft Play centres.
Networking capability:Coverage in larger buildingcomplexes can be achieved bylinking Eurofire EN54 panels andrepeaters together via a ‘CANConnect’ link. It is also possible tomake more power available forsounder circuits or save on fieldwiring.

Panel DisplayThe Eurofire panel includes an easy to reference display with LCD screen allowing for up to four lines of text, withtext programmable for each zone. 6 buttons are included on the front of the panel which can be used to access thefollowing functions:
Lamp test, silence alarms, silence buzzer
User zone and sounder isolation

AnX Wi-free fireOverviewEmergi-Lite Safety Systems offers a wireless fire detection andalarm system package that links into a wired analogue loop.
For a project where a ‘wire-free’ solution is needed, a stagedapproach is employed. Firstly, it is essential to carry out a radiosurvey to understand the radio profile of the building and planwhere devices need to be fitted. Secondly, a proposal listing thetype of equipment will be offered. Prior to the fitting process adetailed scheme layout will be provided with the equipment list toaid the installer. On completion, commissioning of the system is astandard part of the package.
ApplicationsThe system is suited to parts of buildings, which have sensitive structuresand decoration, or which cannot be disturbed for historic or preservationreasons. Wire free equipment is also useful to extend an existing system(temporarily or permanently), such as in portable buildings in aneducational complex.

Wireless devices
AnX Wi-free fire detection devicesThe Anx Wi-free system comprises a set of detection and alarm devices equipped with radio basesections. These communicate with an interface unit mounted according to the radio survey. Theinterface unit is wired into an Anatec analogue addressable system. A fire condition or fault iscommunicated from the radio devices to the interface for relay to the analogue panel, where it isregistered. The radio device address is recognised by the panel as if it were a device wired on the loop.
If there is a fire condition, the panel will issue an alarm signal, which is relayed by radio from the interface to soundthe radio fire alarms.
The dimensions and body construction of the field devices listed below are similar to those of the FA95 devicesshown on pages 13 – 26 of this catalogue.
Battery packsEach radio field device is fitted with two sets of three AA alkaline batteries (for redundancy). The batteries have a 3-year design life for the application.

Aspirating ‘air sampling’ smokedetectionThe methods and technology used in anaspirating smoke detection system is generallymore sensitive than that used in alternativeones, which better serves applications requiringvery high reliability and an immediate response.
Aspiration equipment and technology is highlysensitive to smoke particle detection (detectioncapability as described in the appendix of BS 6266).Such a system is ideal for larger buildings or placeswhich have a need for sensitive and reliable coverage.
ApplicationsThe pipe work detection points can be located veryclose to critical areas and in many instances be siteddiscretely.
Typical applications include:
The protection of clean environments such ascomputer suites, pharmaceutical facilities or othercritical areas
The protection of areas where the building fabricis a concern or where the building contents havehigh value or where the building has a critical use
Museums, Stately homes, art galleries orwarehouses for artefact storage
Telephone exchanges
The system can be used in dusty areas or where theprevailing conditions are more extreme:
Areas with hot or cold temperatures – buildingatriums
Dusty areas – paper mills or grain storagewarehouses for example
Prison establishments
Areas with higher levels of radio energy present
Detector Fire panel loop
Sampling pipes located near air-conditioningextractor– computer suite
System and detector operationThe system is built up from a single detector unitconnected to a matrix of pipework with strategicallyplaced sampling holes along the pipes length. Air isdrawn from the pipe network by an impeller to besampled in a measuring chamber in the detector. Thedetector, which works on the light scattering principle,is at least 10 times more sensitive than a standardpoint detector, such that smoke from a fire will bedetected at a very early stage despite the distance thesampled air might have to travel down the pipe. Theinherent reliability and stability of the system means itwill accurately detect a fire early and not give a falsealarm.
The detector construction, which works on the‘forward light scattering principle’, includes filteringand electronics that enables it to discriminate betweensmoke and dust particles. Other variables such assensor electrical noise are taken into account byalgorithms in the software to determine the level ofsmoke content in the air and hence when to issue analarm signal.
Different detector models are available depending onthe area of detection and the pipe length required.

ApplicationThe duct detector is a supplementary smoke detection system that issuitable for medium to large buildings with ventilation/air heating systems(HVAC). Typical sites include manufacturing and food processing plants, shopping malls, sports arenas and hotels.
The duct detector comprises an air sampling housing, available in twomodels for different conventions. One type will accept an FAPO Orbisdetector (conventional system) and the other includes a base for an AnatecFA95 (or FADY Discovery) smoke detector (analogue addressable).
The housing can be fitted to the wall of the ventilation duct. An inletsampling and an exhaust pipe from the detector housing are fitted throughholes made in the duct wall, to cycle duct air through the chamber and pastthe smoke detector.
The exhaust pipe must be fitted downstream from the inlet to create apressure differential that sucks air through the sample pipe.
When the detector senses smoke an alarm would be registered at the firepanel. Visual indication is shown by the detector LED or via a remote LEDunit that can be connected to the terminal block in the duct devicehousing.

Intrinsically safe firedetection and alarmequipment Ex iAn intrinsically safe circuit is onewhere no spark or an effectfrom a rise in temperature orother increase in energy withinthe circuit will cause ignition toa mixture in a potentiallycombustible atmosphere.
Plants and facilities where paint, solvent or other volatilesubstances are held are classifiedas hazardous areas because anexplosive air/gas mixture may bepresent part or all of the time.
Intrinsically safe fire detection andalarm devices meet the criteria byoperating at such low energy levelsas to be incapable of sparking sucha flammable or combustiblemixture in a hazardous area.
Earthing is required for of all partsof intrinsically safe devices, includingenclosures, cables and conduits aswell as the devices themselves.

Intrinsic safety | Other systems
Intrinsically safe barriersOperation of intrinsically safe fire detection and alarm devicesThe operating sensing characteristics of IS detection devices for detectingsmoke or heat are the same as standard versions.
Use of field detection and alarm devices with IS barriersOnly one sounder device should be connected per barrier. No more than 5detector devices should be connected per barrier.
Design of schemeQualified experts should undertake the design of a scheme for a siteneeding intrinsically safe equipment.
Equipment supplyEmergi-Lite Safety Systems is able to provide intrinsically safe detectors, callpoints and sounders. Please contact our technical sales department withyour specific requirements.
Active isolationIsolation is normally achieved with galvanic isolation.
A galvanic isolator is an active piece of equipmentthat limits the energy transfer to a hazardous areaunder fault conditions. The term ‘transformer isolatedbarrier’ is sometimes used to describe such a device, alluding to a physical separation in the device itself.
On a cautionary note, a galvanic isolator does notcater for polarity reversal in the signal wires to a firepanel in the safe area. Hence, for some panels itwould not be possible to monitor for an open circuitor end of line faults (zone or alarm) in the normalmanner.
Passive isolationA zener diode barrier is a passive type of unit, againdesigned to keep the flow of energy, across theinterface, to such a low level that it could not igniteany combustible gas mixture in the hazardous domain.
The zener device protects against faults in wireconnections to the hazardous side of the barrier.Faults include: - Short circuits, poor earth connection,a power supply failure or incorrect connection
A zener barrier must be connected to a sure equi-potential earth point (at the same potential as theincoming earth to the intrinsically safe area). As thistype of earth connection will cause most fire panels toregister an earth fault, we recommend that the panelmanufacturer be consulted first.

Fire detection systems are vital to ensure the ongoing safety of personnel in any organization. Carefuldesign, proper installation and effective management of the fire detection system are key to promotingsafety and as such are enforced by law, and bound by industry codes of practice.
This section serves as a broad overview of the regulations and standards relevant to fire safety. Wheremore in-depth information is required, please contact our sales team to discuss individual requirementsor request our separate brochure ‘An Authoritative Guide to Advance Fire System Design Techniques.’
Emergi-Lite offers expert assistance in Fire Alarm and Emergency Lighting scheme design to the lateststandards, as a supplementary service to that provided by qualified consulting engineers and local fireauthorities. Our technical team can provide specialist advice, plans and specifications for all types of firesafety systems detailed in this catalogue, including analogue addressable, conventional, voice enhancedand wireless systems.
This section aims to provide a brief overview of the regulations, codes of practice and product standardsrelevant to fire safety.
A more detailed guide ‘An Authoritative Guide to Advanced Fire System Design Techniques’ is available, please contact Emergi-Lite for more details. This authoritative guide covers all aspects of design fromlaws & regulations, through design to comply with BS 5839-1:2002 and associated advanced practices, tocommissioning, maintenance and notes on documentation.
It is recommended that BS 5839:2002 should be read in detail by the user who will be involved withdesign of fire detection systems.
Regulations and standardsThe Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005/Fire(Scotland) Act 2005 is in force today. Some of the keypoints are:
The Fire Safety Order applies to all workplaces andother non-domestic premises.
The control regime is fire risk assessment based, with responsibility for fire safety resting with theperson responsible for the premises (buildingowner/user and employer).
Protection should be provided to all persons insidea building and those who might be affected by afire.
There should be a duty to maintain those fireprecautions required under Building Regulations, which are for the use and protection of the firebrigade.
There will be a new statutory duty on a FireAuthority to promote community fire safety, forpowers of entry for the investigation of fires, andfor a power to take away samples for testing.
Fire protection products and related servicesshould be ‘fit for purpose’, correctly installed andmaintained in accordance with relevant BritishStandards and the instructions of themanufacturer.
In addition the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) hasa significant bearing on the operation of firedetection systems. The type of equipment used inpremises or areas used by the less able must cater fortheir needs, especially knowing that the evacuationtime might be longer. Factors for considerationinclude:
The provision and positioning of manual callpoints for ease of use.
Alarm devices that are both audible and visible inapplicable areas.
The control of fire doors along escape-routes.
Codes of practiceThe British standard code of practice BS 5839-1:2002 isthe code for fire detection and alarm systems forbuildings, systems design, installation and servicing. This code is referred to in ‘Approved document B’(the guide to building regulations) and the guide‘Fire Safety – an employers guide’, which gives itstrength in law.
Other important sections of BS 5839:2002 are:
6: Dwellings
8: Voice alarm systems
Product standardsThe BS EN54 set of standards govern the standard ofdesign and manufacture of products used in firedetection and alarm systems.
Fire system design to comply with BS 5839-1:2002
Documentation and CertificationThe fire alarm system designer should a havedocument record for:
Design
Installation
Commissioning
Categories of systemBefore a designer can start on a fire scheme, thecategory of protection needed should be agreed aseither being P – Property, L – life or M – manual.
Each of these is sub-divided for specific situations andrequirements, as identified below:
Categories (automatic fire detection and alarm [AF] intypes P and L):
Type P: Property protectionP1: AF installed throughout the protected building.P2: AF installed in defined parts only.
Type L: Protection of lifeL1: AF installed throughout the protected building.L2: AF installed in defined parts (a type L2 system
should include the coverage required by a type L3system).
L3: AF to protect escape routes and rooms that openonto escape routes.
L4: AF to protect escape routes in circulation areas, stairways and corridors.
L5: AF to address a specific fire risk situation.
Type M: Manual alarm systems.

Positioning of detection and alarm devices
Detectors, 10-point guide
A summary designed to help the user decide where to fit smoke or heat detectors, when planning a scheme.
1. Siting a detector below a ceiling:
The depth (d) of the sensor element, from the ceilingsurface, to be within the following limits:
Smoke: 25mm< d <600mm
Heat: 25mm< d <150mm
2. Detector area of coverage:
Each detector has a maximum area set by a particular circleradius for the type of device. Full coverage of a space isachieved by arranging detector positions to overlap. Usinggeometry, each device has an optimum ‘square of coverage’.
Smoke detector (R=7.5m, L=10.6m, A=112m2)
Heat detector (R=5.3m, L=7.5m, A=56.3m2)
3. Detector spacing in corridors that that are less than 2mwide:
There is no need to allow for overlap of the detector areas, so spacing can be increased (15m – smoke,10.6m – heat).
4. Flat and apex ceilings:
A ceiling is considered flat if the apex is less than 600mm (smoke) or 150mm (heat).
Apex ceilings – increased spacing
The distance between detectors can be increased by 1% per degree of slope (maximum 25%).
5. Minimum mounting distance away from obstructions: To be 500mm:
Where partitions have a gap of <300mm of gap to the ceiling.
Where crossbeams have a depth >10% of the ceiling height.
6. Stairwells and lift lobbies need a detector within 1.5m of any opening.
7. Enclosed stairwells: Place a detector at the top of each stairway and the main landing area.
8. Place detectors away from light fittings by at least twice the width of the fitting.
9. Keep detectors away from ventilation outlets/inlets by at least 1m.
10. Voids less than 800mm in height can be left unless smoke could spread through from an adjoining area.
Manual call points
The travel distance to a manual call point should be less than 45m (25m for a less able person). Call points should bemounted at a height of 1.4m above the floor (±200mm).
Alarm devices
Minimum sound level: 65dBA, or 5dBA above ambient. In sleeping accommodation: 75dBA at the bedhead.Loss effects owing to doors: –20dBA or –30dBA (fire door). Each zone should have redundancy in case of singlecircuit failure. Visual alarms should be mounted at least 2.1m above floor level.
Cabling
Fire resistant cable should be used for all circuits.
Types of detectorThe products of fire that can be detected are heat, smoke, fire and gas. Detectors are designed to monitor eitherone or a combination (multi-sensor) of these products. Basic types:
Fixed heat detector
Rate of rise (R-o-R) heat detector
Ionisation smoke detector
Optical smoke detector
Carbon monoxide detector (CO), also known ascombustion gas detector
Optical beam smoke detector
Aspirating smoke detector (ASD)
Flame detector

The need for connection to an Alarm ReceivingCentre (ARC), particularly where propertyprotection is identified as being required.
The need for a staged alarm (alert signalsfollowing an alarm).
The need for a phased evacuation (usually for alarge multi storey building)
Risk AssessmentIt is vital that risk assessments are conducted for the building as noted by the Fire Safety Order 2005/Fire (Scotland)Act 2005. A risk assessment should identify hazards, needs and actions for correction. The key sections to be checkedare:
The person doing the risk assessment should be very familiar with the layout and use of the building. It is unlikelythat the fire detection and alarm system designer or sales engineer would be sufficiently familiar with the buildingor its use to complete a full risk assessment, but advice and consultation is usually available. It is therefore veryimportant that the designer consults with, and exchanges information with, the interested parties, rather thanworking in isolation. Having identified the above hazards, factors and needs, a decision would then be maderegarding the category of the fire protection system. At this point the fire detection and alarm system designerwould be asked to design the appropriate system, taking into account the information in the risk assessment processabove.
If the client or specifier is not able to decide on the Category, it may be left to the designer to propose a Category.Further, the contract responsibilities should be clearly agreed, so that any legal implications are defined.
Please note that Emerg-Lite Safety Systems does not undertake risk assessments.
Fire system design and integrityIf a fault occurs the design must take into account the rules of limitation for circuit integrity within the building. The Authoritative guide details the rules of integrity in relation to fire zones and the differences to considerbetween addressable and non-addressable installations. Key points are that a detection circuit fault must not disablemore than 2000m2 (non-addressable). At least two sounder circuits should be employed in a space greater than4000m2, or where the building might accommodate more than 500 members of the public. Small buildings havingless than 300m2 floor area may be treated as having one detection zone.
Full information on advanced scheme design is detailed in the Emergi-Lite Authoritative Guide to Advanced FireAlarm System Design.
