Height and Stagger Gauge

For taking height and stagger

measurements of the over head line

using a Hilti PD42 measurement laser.

The laser is positioned at eye level and

features a 90º viewing prism, enabling

the operator to see the desired cable

and laser location marker at the same

time, in all weather conditions,

including bright sunshine. The rail head

to cable height reading is displayed on

an LCD display, the value is

compensated for the height offset of

the laser, meaning that no on site

calculation is required.

Cable stagger position is indicated on a

scale on the lateral beam of the gauge.

The horizontal beam folds down flat to

the lateral beam for storage and

transport.

This gauge is subject to a 12 monthly

Types of Fibre Web Sling

There are various different types of Web Slingsand various capacities. Being able to identifythese types is essential. Each SWL (Safe Work-ing Load) is denoted by coloour. Slings can bemade of materials such as - nylon, polyester,kevlar etc.

Lifting With Web Slings

Fibre slings are suitable for a large number oflifting activities awhere large lifting capacity isrequired, but a low weight of LLT (Loose LiftingTackle). It is deal for delicate equipment, forexample, S&C components that are required tobe installed whist maintaining a high level offactory build integrity. There are severalmethods that can be used to sling componentsusing fibre web slings and it is vital that duringthe sling and subsequent lift, care is taken tomake sure that the risk of damage to the slingand component is mitigated. This could bethrought the use of protective sleeves, notinstalling excessive sling eyes to hooks, usingthe correct couplings (shackles / hooks). NB thislist is not exhaustive.

Re Rating Slings when Choaked/Clutched orBasket Configuration

As with most lifting tackle, the angles of liftand configuration will affect the capacity of thetackle. As opposed to lift chains/brothers.Slings can, in some cases, increase their capa-bility in various configurations. Slingers MUSTbe aware of this when slinging loads.

Inspection of Slings

ALL slings should be inspected prior to EVERYuse to ensure that their strength and integrityhave not been comprimised. As with all otherlifting equipment they are required by law(LOLER) to be inspected at periodic times.They must also be identified as being tested.With slings this is by way of a fabric tag woveninto the sling (usually near the eye).

Types of damage to be inspected for - cuts,heat/friction wear, fraying etc.
