Topic: Circulatory systemAim: Describe the parts of the blood.
Do Now: Explain why you have blood in your body.
HW: Read pgs. 540- top of 545. Write down 10 bullets (in complete sentences).
Blood
•Liquid tissue
•Adult = about 5L
PLASMA
•Liquid part•Mostly made of water (90%)
•Transports materials:–Salt, sugar, proteins–Wastes–Enzymes–Blood cells–Hormones
Red Blood Cells
•Most numerous•Disc shaped•Smaller than wbc’s
•Made in bone marrow
RBC’s are made at a rate of 2-3 million per second in the center of long bones like the femur in your thigh. They are
round and tiny. About 3,000 end to end would equal 1 inch. An average body contains about 25 trillion RBC’s.
That’s 600-700 times as many as white blood cells.
•No nucleus when mature
• Contain HEMOGLOBIN carries OXYGEN (& some CO2)
White Blood Cells
•Fight infection / disease
•Made in bone marrow•Largest •Fewer than RBC’s
An average adult’s body normally contains over 35 billion WBC’s. That’s
1 for every 600-700 RBC’s.
Platelets
•Cell fragments (cytoplasm surrounded by a membrane)
•Made in bone marrow•Involved in BLOOD CLOTTING
Blood Clotting
A. Stick to edge of cut
Circulatory System: Blood Platelets
B. Produce FIBRIN (long, sticky string) that sticks to cut vessel
C. Web like complex of strands forms to stop bleeding CLOT
D. Clot becomes hard & dry (SCAB)
E. Skin cells repaired under scab and scab falls off
One grain of rice = 1 cubic mm5 million RBC’s5,000 – 10,000 WBC’s400,000 platelets
Did you know…•In the US, a blood transfusion is
needed about every 2 seconds.•Plasma transfusions help patients
with liver disease, severe burns, hemophilia, and leukemia.
•About half of Americans can safely be blood donors, but only 5% of these people actually donate blood.
Review: Identify the part of blood being described.
1. Most numerous blood cell.2. Carries enzymes.3. Involved in blood clotting.4. Carries oxygen.5. Largest blood cell.6. Made up of 90% water.7. Involved in blood clotting.8. Protect the body against disease.9. Carries hormones.
