10 Tips for
Raising your Puppy...Early learning is essential if you are to own a well-educated and well-round dog.
George dreams of Headstart...
1. Start Training Straight Away
It’s important to begin your training regieme as soon as you get your new
puppy. Training is about setting boundaries and helping your dog know
what behaviour is acceptable and what isn’t.
2. Go to Puppy Training Classes
This will help with socialisation as well as obedience commands and life
skills. Try and nd a class which isn’t too big or poorly managed as this can
do more harm than good.
3. Stick to a Routine
A regular feeding routine will make it much easier to house-train your pup.
Feeding at regular intervals, followed by a walk around the garden after
each meal, when he’s been asleep and when he’s been playing will help your
puppy get the hang of things and he should start asking to go out.
4. Buy Lots of Chews and Toys
Not only will this save you worrying
about your furniture it will keep your
new pup from getting into bad habits.
5. Be Consistent
Although puppies need love and
aection, the most important thing you
can oer them is the security of a routine
and a consistent set of rules.
6. Teach Him to Focus on You.
If you can hold your dogs attention you
will be better equipped to teach him
other commands. The best way is to ask
him to focus on you whilst holding a toy
or treat.

Sarah and Friski...
This month’s top dog...Friski is a 3 year old Labrador x Collie, owned by 19 year old Sarah
Woodward from Clitheroe, Lancashire.
Sarah has been feeding Wutmix Silver Flake to Friski for a year now and has
commented on how much healthier she’s looking, “her coat is in much better
condition and she’s lost the excess weight she was carrying, a common trait in
Labrador’s.”
Sarah has owned Friski - a Collie x Labrador - since she was a puppy and began
working with her at obedience classes at WAG Dog Training Club in Fence, Lanca-
shire. The club aims to teach dogs in a kind and positive manner through the use of
‘The Kennel Club Good Citizens Dog Scheme,’ which was established to promote
socially acceptable dogs and to teach owners how to train their dogs.
The competitions Sarah and Friski have taken part in involve several tests including
‘stays,’ where Friski must sit and stay for up to 2 minutes, ‘heel work,’ where Friski
must demonstrate walking to heel, ‘recall’ and also ‘retrieve.’ Sarah also qualied for
the northern nal of the ‘Kennel Club Good Citizen Pre-beginners stakes’ which was
held in Edinburgh, winning this competition enabled her to qualify for Crufts 2011 -
she came 6th and 8th out of 20 competitors.

Could you offer some time to help?
Could you help?
The Cinammon Trust is the only specialist national charity for people
in their last years and their much loved, much needed companion
animals.
Oering peace of mind to the elderly and terminally ill, as well as their pets, The
Cinammon Trust is a network of 15,000 volunteers who provide vital love and care
with the aim of keeping people with their pets. The help provided varies from daily
dog walks for housebound owners to collecting cat food or cleaning out a bird cage.
The charity currently helps 14,000 people with 16,000 pets and desperately needs
your help to make sure they’re always there for people and pets in need.
“It is widely acknowledged that pets can positively benet the
well-being of elderly owners. For many elderly people living
on their own, their pets are their reason for living.”
Meredith Peterson, The Cinammon Trust.
It is widely acknowledged that pets can positively benet the well-being of elderly
owners. For many elderly people living on their own, their pets are their reason for
living. They are constant companions - on hand 24 hours a day, every day, comforting,
loving and protecting their owners - not only from outside threats, but also oering the
more subtle form of protection from loneliness and despair.
The Trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship
between owners and their pets. To this end it works in partnership with owners to
overcome any diculties that might arise.
