DEAR ABBY: I am a 35-year-old singleman. Three years ago, I took legal custody ofmy niece (who is now 8) to prevent her frombecoming a ward of the state. Her parentswere drug addicts. Shortly after-ward, my mother moved in to helpme raise her, which is greatlyneeded and appreciated.

The problem is, I had to dramati-cally alter my lifestyle — no morestaying out late on weekends or im-promptu trips to visit college bud-dies — and worst of all, an end todating.

I used to go out with a lot ofwomen, but I haven’t been with any-one in more than two years. I didn’tlike the idea of bringing ladiesaround my niece whom she mightnever see again. It was easier to justgive up dating than to deal with herquestions and looks of confusion. She hashad enough instability in her young life, and Ididn’t want to add to it.

would probably have better luck if you join agroup like Parents Without Partners or asksome of your married friends if they knowsomeone nice.

were watching a popular annualawards show recently. Like most ofthese, this one included an “InMemoriam” segment in which wasfeatured a slideshow of the photosand names of people from the fieldwho had died during the year.
