NBIS Winter Concert: Pre-School to Year 3
Time has flown by … and the weeks of preparation for the Winter Concert will culminate at 2:00pm on
Thursday December 14th with the final performance for parents.
From 1:30pm Mon Epoque (French Bakery) will serve Christmas cake and cookies in the School Office.
So come early and enjoy the festive fun! And there will be a lucky draw for all the kids.
All parents should be seated in the Auditorium by 2:00pm for a prompt start. (Reminder: Absolutely no
food and drink to be taken into the Auditorium. Thank you.)
We look forward to seeing you all!
Lower Primary’s Little Scientists!
Lower Primary’s Science Club has sadly come to an end this
week but what great fun we have had! The children have
really enjoyed learning about many different aspects of
Science. Such as light and shadows, changing seasons, forces,
gravity and push and pull and balance and floating.
This was a great opportunity for the children to do some
hands on activities, learn some new scientific vocabulary and
have a go at working in groups on different experiments. Mrs.
Wylie and Mr. McNorton had a great time with Lower
Primary and we are looking forward to seeing what these little scientists can do in the future! Watch out
Albert Einstein!
Year 2A- Shadow Chasers
This month in Science, Year 2A have been learning about the
Earth’s rotation, night and day and shadows as part of a unit
called ‘The Earth and Beyond’. This week we used the lovely
weather to go outside on a walking field trip! We drew our
shadows in the morning and the afternoon to see how they
changed. We observed that our shadows became shorter and
moved because the Earth had rotated. It was exciting for the
students to see the changes and be able to explain why the
changes had occurred.

Primary Student Council Meeting
It’s great to have students involved in helping us improve the school. Our Primary Student Council met
today for the last time before the Winter Holiday!
Basketball
NBIS Secondary School basketball team played two more matches last weekend. The team are really
starting to work together and have shown fantastic fighting spirit during every game.
The next set of games will take place this weekend, Saturday 9th December, at HD Ningbo.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION INITIATIVE
At NBIS, we really do believe that the world
is our classroom. We want our students to
get up from their desks and get out there …
to explore the great outdoors.
That’s why we’ve been searching for a
provider of Outdoor Education Services in
China and on Monday, Andrew Wright –
Director of Operations for Indier Outdoor,
was invited to present a range of outdoor
learning experiences to our students in Y4-
13.
Andrew is a great communicator and connected immediately with our students. He explained the value
of Indier’s programmes and was careful to balance the adrenalin rush of excitement or fear that
students may experience when attempting something difficult for the first time (such as a high rope
exercise) and the need for humility and respect in the face of such personal challenges.
Of course, safety – whether on a hike or rafting, in the accommodation or food provision – is always at
the top of the agenda for Andrew.
Parents of students in Y4-13 will be receiving more information about the opportunities available with
Indier Outdoor next June and we really hope that many will want to take up the challenge and join in the
fun.

NBIS presents the WEARABLE ART SHOW April 2018
Wearable Art is the creative skill of taking any material, no matter how odd, and
making something that is worn. It can involve recycled material but this is not
essential. Creations are judged on interpretation of the topic (the more “left field”
the better!), choice of material and how it is used, and workmanship (doesn’t fall
apart and can be displayed for eternity!!)
The competition and show will involve two divisions Yrs 9 -13 and Yrs 5 – 8

Rolling in the Deep: We know more about the surface of Mars than what we do about the what lurks in
the depths of our oceans. This will be a fluoro section using ultraviolet lights that activates white and
fluorescent colours. You will need black material too….
Metallica: Go where you like!
If Only I Could Fly: Based loosely around flight
PRIZES! PRIZES! PRIZES!
What to do now? Start collecting stuff, storing stuff to use. There will be weekly after school workshops
here at school next term and you can work from home. During the April holiday April 2 -5, we will stage
a school based workshop prior to the show for those finishing touches!
Work in pairs, groups, or individually. You don’t have to model your creation, other people can do that.

NBIS Reaching Out
On Wednesday evening, the Principal, Deputy and other members of the NBIS Team attended a dinner
at the invitation of the Ningbo Association of Foreign Investment Enterprises. This is an influential
forum within the city, and comprises Chinese, Taiwanese, Thai, Korean and other leaders of businesses
in Ningbo which are funded by foreign investment. They were surprised and delighted to learn about
Ningbo International School and we expect that some of those we met will visit our campus in 2018.
On Thursday morning, the Principal, Deputy and Director of Admissions visited Samsung Heavy
Industries, Beilun. NBIS already has 8 students connected with Samsung and this was an opportunity to
explain more about what the school has to offer and hear what Korean families are looking for. A bonus
was that Samsung extended an invitation to our students to visit their ship-building yard in Ningbo … a
world leader in this specialized heavy industry. A great opportunity for our students next semester!
CTCSOL (Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Language) test
On the 4th of December, Ningbo International School
launched the Second Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to
Speakers of Other Languages (CTCSOL) Test Training
Programme as part of the school's commitment to
professional development of its staff. Fifteen Chinese staff
members, who are from all sections of the school signed up
to participate. NBIS provided strong support for them as part
of the policy to help staff develop skills and knowledge. At
the launching ceremony, Ms. Emily Zhang gave an opening
speech and then Ms. Daisy Yan and Ms. Wenwen Wang gave
a brief introduction of CTCSOL test, and an overview of how
the training programme would be structured. At the end of
the training, Mr. Philip Billing and Mr. Robert Yan gave
encouraging speeches about the programme and the
teachers. The programme will continue until April with the
goal of developing the teaching skills of the Chinese teachers.
