HOW THE ON I S B L I ND EVOLVED
In the mid 70's Edmond ONISinvented the first generationONIS Line Blind. Together withhis stepson Jean-FrançoisFAVREAU-ONIS, he went on todevelop the highly successfulONIS Quick-Action Line Blindwhich is now regularly specifiedby most of the major companiesworldwide.
The ONIS Line Blind is designedand manufactured to suit custo-mer applications. The speciali-sed demands of the petrochemical and oil industries overthe years have brought about a line blinding device that issimple yet highly effective in providing ultra safe line iso-lation.
To evaluate an ONIS system properly, one must firstunderstand the alternative methods of blinding. The mostbasic method utilizes a metal plate (or "spectacle" blind)that is inserted manually between two flanges. Thisapproach is obviously labor intensive, giving rise to potential dangers around heavy piping and exposure toresidual hazardous chemicals. The traditional "figure-8" or"spectacle" blind can only be swung when the flangeshave been forced open, with brass wedges or jackingbolts.
The traditional blinding methods have significant disadvantages :

ONIS Line Blind is composed of two half bodies connected bya mechanical system and a slide gate. The Line Blind has agreat stiffness and permits to one person to isolate a 10" linein seconds.
Depressurize and drain the pipe before useRelease the locking device DO NOT OPERATE UNDER PRESSURE
Operate the lever to spread the two half bodies, and then free theslide, centered by the lifting system. The expansion of the line is 3 to 5mm depending on the size of the blind (value less important than thenormal thermal expansion).
Move the slide gateSlide can be operated from the blinded position to full bore positionthanks to the roller lift system which permits to guide and center theslide during the movement.
Operate the lever to clamp the two half bodies and lock the Line Blindin position. Line Blind is now online in the chosen position.

UseThis ONIS Filter Line Blind was designed first tooptimize filter changing on crude oil line.
In traditional filter operation and replacement,the filters are in spool pieces between twoflanges. Maintenance workers must unboltflanges, separate the pipe and remove thespool piece with the filter usually using a craneor hoist. Next they replace the dirty filter with anew filter, replace the spool piece and bolt theflanges. This traditional replacement requires along process shut-down of several hours andresults in costly production loss.
The ONIS Filter Line Blind is a solution to minimize down-time, exposure time and to reduce the risk of pollution.
Spread and clamp operation are the same as a classic LineBlind, but the slide is replaced by a special filter holder.When one filter is in line, the second can be cleaned.
The ONIS Filter Line Blind can be adapted to any size,pressure, to many media, liquid or gas.

Slide Gate Lifting System
When the Line Blind can be assembled onthe installation only with a vertical move-ment of the slide gate, it may be equipedwitha mechanical or hydraulic lifting system.
The hydraulic lifting system uses a manualhydraulic "hand" pump to raise and lowerthe slide. Safety is assured by non-returnvalves. This is frequently used on ONIS LineBlind for Off-Shore applications.
The lifting system is equipped with safetydevices on the hydraulic command.
The mechanical lifting system uses anhardwheel and a threaded rod. ONIS Line Blind 16” PN 10 with hydraulic

Line Blind with 3 positions slide gateThis Line Blind is equipped with a particular slidegate with three positions. In addition to the traditio-nal positions, full bore and blanked, the Line Blindhas a reduced passage, to create a drop pressure orto control the flow for a given application, such as anorifice plate.
The diameter of the reduced bore is machined accor-ding to customer’s specifications.

ONIS LINE BLIND ON A FLARE STACK NETWORK
The diagram represents ONIS Line Blind 4” to 36” within aflare stack network, protecting the units that produce plas-tic.
Two flares stacks are connected with a principal vessel, diameter 1200 (48") and isolated by two ONIS Line BlindsMPL 900 (36"). This configuration provides a proven meansof quick and safe maintenance isolation for one flare stack,while the other remains online.
A mechanical interlock system insures that the two Lineblinds are never in the blind position at the same time.
The ONIS Line Blind PLR 700 (28") can be used during main-tenance or within the security circuits of the flare stacks.
All the units are connected to the vessel by ONIS Line Blindat the inlets (PLR 400 –16", PLR 600 –24", PLR 650-26"),which enables isolation of each unit whenever needed.
ONIS blinds, at the inlets of the main vessel, are fitted onthe basis of operating at ten-year intervals, for plannedshutdown to allow for metallic-corrosion inspection.
This is an insurance-type application in case of accident orcorrosion damage, giving the refinery the means to reactquickly to isolate a unit or process. The off-site ONIS blinds,as well as the vessel blinds, can be operated at any time formaintenance or process needs.

Water Inlet : By using a valve and an ONIS Line Blind,water inflow into the furnace can be controlled.
Steam Inlet : Same principle and material as for the waterinlet.
Gas Inlet and Decoke Air Inlet : the traditional practice ofmanual "elbow" switching to ensure gas or air only-andnever the two together, is labor intensive. This results inunnecessary plant downtime, and thus affecting the end-product profitability.
By replacing this traditional practice with the ONIS twinblinds system, it is possible to switch from one line to theother with total confidence in seconds. Also ONIS has a safety blanking position on both lines to process ormaintenance needs. Cost savings are considerable andpersonnel safety increased.

In this case, only diesel can be loaded from manifold 3, crudeoil line and unballast line are in blinded position.
Brut crude oil can be unloaded from manifold 2, unballast anddiesel lines are in blinded position.
In this case, the use of ONIS Line Blind avoids the possiblecontamination and allows isolation of lines for maintenance.
Installing the ONIS Line Blind on the manifold's bottom outlets avoids contamination between the different productsand clogs the collector.
Hydrocarbon Pump Station
In a pump station, each pump canbe protected by ONIS blinds (ups-tream and downstream).
A pump can be isolated and takendown for maintenance, withoutstopping the pump station orlosing production.
