One area of the wastestream that tends to getoverlooked is the organicportion. In Iowa we havebanned grass clippings andleaves from our landfills, but there is still quite a bitof organic waste that islandfilled. One organiccategory that tops thecharts in municipal garbageis kitchen waste.
Work has begun on BremerCounty's Customer Conven-ience Center and is on trackto open to residents onOctober 1st. The CustomerConvenience Center willoperate similar to a smallloads drop-off site, in thatrefuse will be dumped into30-yard roll-off bins. When full, county staff willhaul the waste to the BlackHawk County Landfill fordisposal. Bremer County Receives SWAP Grant From Iowa MR
In an effort to control hauling costsfor both the Bremer County Recy-cling Program and Customer Conven-ience Center (CCC), Bremer Countywill be purchasing a hook-lift truckthat will be able to haul both thecommunity recycling roll-off bins andthe refuse roll-off bins at the CCC.
This summer, the county receivedword from the Iowa Department of
Natural Resources that the SolidWaste Alternatives Program (SWAP)grant that the county submitted fora hook-lift truck was accepted.
Currently the county hires a privatecompany to bring full recycling binsfrom participating cities to theBremer County Recycling Center. The $20,000 grant will be used to-wards the purchase of the truck
that will be shared between Recy-cling and the Customer Conven-ience Center.
SWAP grants are open to all levelsof government, schools and busi-nesses. Grants are acceptedquarterly, with the next proposalsdue October 1st. For more details, log onto www.iowadnr.com/waste/financial/index.html.

Since receiving word from the IowaDNR and EPA (Environmental Pro-tection Agency) that the BremerCounty Landfill was required toclose due to new landfill liner re-quirements, Bremer County did notwant to leave residents without alocal place to get rid of garbage.
Instead of making all citizens driveto the Black Hawk County Landfillto get rid of smaller amounts ofgarbage, the Bremer County Super-visors decided that the countywould provide a local drop-off site
for residents, which will save themfuel traveling to Waterloo with theirgarbage.
The Customer Convenience Center(CCC) will be located adjacent to thecurrent landfill, next to the house-hold hazardous collection buildings. The current scale and same accessroads will be used once the site turnsinto a customer convenience center.
The concrete work and approachesare finished at the CCC and the nextstep is an enclosure to stop garbage
from blowing out of the roll-off binson windy days. Roll-off bins as wellas a hook-lift truck for the Cus-tomer Convenience Center arescheduled to arrive in September.
For more information on the CCC,contact Bret Bienemann, BremerCounty Landfill Manager at (319)352-4574 or contact the BremerCounty Supervisors at (319) 352-0130.
In the lower section, Bremer Countywill place roll-off waste containers.
The Bremer County Landfill will no longer beable to bury refuse after Sept. 30, 2007due to federal regulations.Municipalities and large waste generatorswill be required to direct-haul their waste tothe Black Hawk County Landfill startingOctober 1, 2007.Residents with small loads will be able to usethe Bremer County Customer ConvenienceCenter (CCC) starting October 1, 2007.
