Thriller Opening Analysis
Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is very structured. Everything is in order, for example the things he is picking up from the table. But he also seems a little bit mental, when he is lying in his bed and listen to the manometer. Mills (Brad Pitt) is dressed more younger in his black leather coat. He want to bring some new energy and style in.
Characters
Somerset is in his flat and you see how he is getting ready for work. Then he is arriving at the crime scene where a woman was murdered. Mills the new inspector is joining. Then there are walking down a street. In the opening scene are many clues to the following full movie.
Plot
In the opening sequence of Se7en are following shots used: It is a tracking shot used, the camera is following the inspectors
for a long time
There are also some close ups used. In this situation the close up is very good because are just concentrated on the things the inspector is picking up.
You also find lots of tilts, they can hid a detail first and then showit so there is some suspense.
Camera
Right at the beginning it starts with very minimized sound, the sound is getting louder then.
Nearly all the time you hear lot’s of background streets sounds.
In some scenes the sound is just picked up from one specific action.For example when the inspector picking up the stuff from the table. The sound of this picking up is very loud.
Sound
Slow paced to start with
Inside the building it there is low light.
It speeds up in the credits and the contrast is very sharp.
Editing
Everything is in the style of classic crime thriller. The old inspector (Morgan Freeman) wears a long coat, a hat. He is really classic dressed. All over it is really dark lighting and it is mainly raining all the time. That makes a depressed feeling on the audience.
