What does CERN do?*
• High Energy Physics (HEP)
• Smash particles together with highly complex machinery like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
• Gather data on the smashings and what pops out of them.
• Make conclusions about Life, the Universe, and Everything.
• Central place for HEP. Everyone either comes through here or uses our data.
* (barely) explained by a non-physicist
Experiments on the LHC*
• As particles go shooting around the LHC, instruments at each collision point record data.
• Each of these is an “experiment,” by which we really mean “enormous collaboration.”
• Each experiment gathers huge amounts of data on collisions happening many times each second.
(Just watch the movie: http://cds.cern.ch/record/1125472)
* crudely represented

1. Provision
of additional
documentation for the publishe
d results
2. Simplified data formats for analysis
in outreach and training exercises
3. Reconstructed data and simulations as well as the analysis
level software to allow a full scientific analysis
4. Basic raw level data (if not yet covered as level 3 data) and their associated software which allows
access to the full potential of the experimental data
HEP Experimental Data Pipeline• Enormous amounts of raw data
come from the LHC experiments
• Data is progressively processed into smaller pieces
• Disparate data needs are met by a suite of data services
INSPIRE
INSPIRE• http://inspirehep.net
• For literature in high energy physics.
• Included author profiles and citation counts before they were cool.
• De facto career portal.
• Averaged ~321,000 unique visitors per month in 2015.
HEPData
HEPData
• http://hepdata.net
• For supplementary publication data (tip of the iceberg)
• Linked to publication information in INSPIRE
• Includes pre-data-release review functions
CERN Analysis Preservation
CERN Analysis Preservation• https://analysis-preservation.cern.ch/
• code and use cases: https://github.com/cernanalysispreservation
• For storage and access to analysis-level data.
• Captures complexity of data, processing steps, and code, plus peer review and QA.

DOIs – individual and collections• All HEPData records get DOIs.
• Each data table gets a versioned DOI.
• The whole HEPData record is also given a DOI to encompass the whole collection.
Comprehensive data review system
ORCID login for reviewer functions
