Activities
There are loads on offer! As well as music, art and sport as part of the timetable, there are activity slots on Tuesday
and Thursday lunch times (1:55 to 2:40) and most days after school (4 to 4.50pm). You should choose 3 activities
a week (unless you do several out of school activities and/or have a long journey to and from school).
Absence/late arrivals
If you are unwell and cannot come in to school, or have a medical appointment, your parents need to email your
tutor, copying in Mrs Brown and [email protected] . If you arrive after 8.20am (or if you need to
leave campus for any reason during the school day, to go to the dentist for example) you must enter school through
the main front entrance, signing in at the Security lodge before going to your lessons.
Assemblies
Each morning we have an assembly – of some sort. On most days this is with the whole of the school, in Chapel,
but on Fridays you will have House Assembly in the Third Form Common Room. It is important that you attend
these to find out what is going on and to be fully involved in the school.
Attendance at School
School starts at 8:20 am – you need to arrive on time. Remember the Sutherland Road and Walpole Road gates
close at 8.20am! After that you need to go through the main front entrance. Your lessons will finish at 4pm on
Tuesdays and Thursdays and your Games sessions will finish between 4 and 4.40pm on Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays. You are free to go home once your lesson/games session has finished, but many pupils do choose
to stay after school to go to activity clubs or to do homework. There is a quiet homework room every day after
school opposite the Third Form Common Room, and the Common Room is supervised between 4 and 6pm
every day.
Blue Book /Pupil Planner
You will be given a planner for each term – and a Blue Book for your parents too. This tells you what is going
on and has information in it about who teaches what and who is in each House or tutor group, for example.
Bullying
The College has in place a strict anti-bullying code based on mutual respect and which underscores the
unacceptability of any form of bullying. We encourage you to turn to someone who will listen to you (either an
older pupil, a teacher or the Health Centre staff) if you are unhappy at all – or if you suspect that someone else is.
Anyone who is caught systematically bullying another pupil will be expelled.
Boundaries around school (please look at the diagram at the end of the handbook)
During the school day, for your own health and safety, you must not leave the campus except to travel to the
Jubilee Ground for games and Montague for music or drama lessons. You will always be accompanied by an adult
at these times.
Calculators
You’ll need one of these for maths and science – don’t rely on your phone! Maths teachers can help you choose.
You can also purchase stationery at The College Tailor.
4
Careers
You may not have thought about a job yet, but you need to start! All information on careers, gap years and
university is held in the Library. You will also have Careers sessions as part of your PSHE days in the L3rd and
U3rd.
Chapel
The College is a Church of England foundation and has maintained a tradition of services both on weekdays and
Sundays. We believe these to be an important part of the College’s life and pupils’ general curriculum. Assembly
is in the chapel on Mondays and Tuesdays, and you will attend a specific chapel service on alternate Wednesdays.
You will also be expected to come to at least two Sunday chapel service each year (plus the New Pupils service
for L3rds and Christmas Carol Service). Please check your Blue Books for dates. If you are an active member of
a non-Christian faith, please see Father Robert or Mrs Brown to discuss the alternatives.
Chapel timetable
Monday: Assembly in Chapel
Tuesday: Assembly in Chapel: 3rd, 4th & 5th Form – speakers/hymn practice
Wednesday: Chapel service: 3rd Form plus 6 Houses (alternate weeks)
Thursday: No assembly. Period 0 lesson for 3rd, 4th and 5th Form
Friday: 3rd Form assembly in the Skidelsky building
Code of Conduct for Pupils
We don’t have many rules at Brighton College – but here they are! Keep life simple and more pleasant for everyone
by sticking to them.
Show respect for yourself and for the school community.
Be courteous and polite to everyone, kind and helpful to one another.
Respect one another’s property, the school buildings and furniture.
Arrive at school on time and fully prepared.
Do your best in class and complete prep (homework) as well as possible and on time.
Take pride in your uniform and dress correctly. In the L3rd, U3rd and 4th form no make-up or nail varnish
is allowed. Pupils must wear sensible style, flat black leather shoes with heels no more than one inch high
girls.
Walk sensibly, safely and quietly around the school and to and from games.
Behave safely at all times, observing safety rules (e.g. fire procedures). Do not put others’ safety at risk.
Look after your own possessions and leave valuables at home.
Use mobile phones with discretion and never in public spaces.
Look after each other and support each other, including when on-line.
Do not indulge in sexual relationships, act modestly in public.
Be healthy – do not take or have in your possession tobacco (including e-cigarettes), alcohol, or non-
prescribed drugs in any form, at any time or in any place.
Stay within the published bounds of the school.
Look after the school, do not drop litter.
Play ball games only in designated areas at approved times and dressed appropriately.
Do not eat in public places, do not chew gum.
5
Remember, the four things which we do not tolerate at Brighton College:
Bullying
Theft
Involvement in drugs
Sexual activity on school grounds, including involvement with sexting
If you do these things you risk your place in the College.
Counselling
Sometimes things don’t go as well for you as you would like and you need a sympathetic ear to listen to you. As well as your tutor and Mrs Brown (Housemistress of Third Form), the College has a team of counsellors coordinated by the Health Centre under Sister Kirsteen Vernon; you can visit them to make an appointment confidentially if something is bothering you. If you can’t say it, write it down. You can email this address which is completely confidential: [email protected]
Daily Transport – Trains, planes and automobiles!
We have a number of bus routes to bring you to school. Please remember that you should wear full school
uniform and behave sensibly when travelling on the buses. In the afternoon, all school buses depart promptly at
5pm. Please ensure that you arrive in good time to board your bus (approx. 4.50pm). If you miss your bus go and
find Mrs Brown, your tutor or Mr Owton. If you cannot find anyone in the Third Form (Skidelsky building), go
to Security and ask them to help. They can let you make a phone call and can call a taxi for you, if needed.
If you cycle, please leave your bike locked safely on campus. If you come by car with an older brother or sister
who attends the College then we need permission from your parents.
Dress – School uniform (supplied by The College Tailor) School uniform lists are sent to parents each year. Take pride in your uniform – look smart around school and at
school events and make sure you stick to the rules. Casual clothes can be worn on certain occasions, e.g., the

Detentions
If you break the code of conduct unfortunately you may find yourself being disciplined by subject teachers or
house staff. In the Third Form we have a yellow and red card system. A yellow card may be issued for a minor
offence, for which you will do a Third Form detention in House. If you receive three yellow cards in one term
this is equal to a red card. A red card may be issued for a major offence, for which you will receive a full school
detention. This will go on your school record and a letter will be sent home to your parents. Follow the code of
conduct to keep out of detention!
Distinctions
Distinctions are awarded for especially good work. If you are awarded a distinction you will be invited to see the
Head Master. If a pupil receives certain numbers of distinctions they will earn a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum
award certificate.
Drugs & Alcohol
This is a serious no go in school. You will receive drugs education as part of the PSHEE and biology teaching.
Any pupil caught bringing drugs on to the campus, or found under the influence of them, will be asked to leave
the school. No alcohol is to be consumed at any time.
Many of your teachers will contact you via email or give you the option of emailing your prep (homework). It is
important to remember some basic email etiquette. Always formally address your teacher as if you were writing a
letter. For example;
Dear Miss Hamblett,
Attached is my English prep on the poem studied last lesson.
Yours sincerely,
Joe Smith.
Finally, some of you may use Snapchat/Instagram or other social networking sites. It is not appropriate for you
to invite your teacher to be your friend.
9
Exams
Argh! A fact of life I am afraid. In L3rd and U3rd you will have an examination week in the Michaelmas term
(term 1) and the Trinity term (term 3). You will be given lots of support and guidance by your teachers to help
you revise. Prepare well and good luck!
Field Days
Each term we have a non-teaching activity day for everyone. You may get the chance to do fieldwork, go on trips
to museums and galleries. Above all, you should enjoy this day out of school!
Firefly
This is Brighton College’s intranet site. It contains subject information, general pupil guidance (Houses, wellbeing,
calendars, information on exams etc.), information on activities and the co-curriculum, the list is endless! It is an
invaluable resource which you will use on a daily basis. Your teachers will set all your prep (homework) using
Firefly. Your tutor will run an introductory session on how to use Firefly when you start in the Third Form.
Food, glorious food!
Of course you will want to have lunch at school each day. This is served in the main dining room, Scott’s Café
and the Smith Café. In the L3rd and U3rd you will have lunch every day in Scott’s Café. The cost of lunch is
included in your school fees, so there is no need to bring any extra money. Snacks can be purchased at break time
from the Smith café, but this is entirely optional!
Grading and reports – How you know how you are doing
You will receive a grade every three to four weeks throughout the year. There are two elements to this: an
attainment grade and an effort mark. Attainment grades give an indication of the quality of work which is being
produced whilst effort marks show the level of effort being put into work, regardless of ability. Each pupil in the
school receives written subject reports at the end of each term.
Health Centre
You must keep dietary or medical info up to date. If you don’t feel well during the day, tell your teacher and excuse
yourself from class and visit the Health Centre. You can always take a friend with you. Sister Kirsteen Vernon and
her team are always on hand to help.
Pupil surgery hours:
Monday - Thursday: 8am to 9pm
Friday: 8am to 5pm
Saturday & Sunday: 8am to 8pm
The Health Centre is located in the Simon Smith Building.
Homework/Prep
Typically you should expect to be working as follows in the evening:
L3rd form 1 hour each evening
U3rd form 1 hour 15 minutes each evening
There is a quiet homework room which you can use every day after school between 4 and 5pm opposite the Third
Form Common Room. The library is also a great place to do your homework!
Houses – For the 4th form – Upper Sixth
You do not go into the House system until the start of the 4th form, but to let you know there are 13 houses, each
of which has about 70 boys or girls.
10
Information Technology
You will, of course, use ICT in your lessons and at other times when in school. When you first arrive at Brighton
College you will be given a log-on and password to allow you access to the network. You will be able to find
useful resources on Firefly and also access the internet. Please remember to respect the ICT facilities that you are
able to use, so that other pupils can also have this facility. Don’t forget that you can use the College Website from
home, to keep up with what is happening at school and also to access resources on Firefly that your teachers have
posted for you.
Pupils’ Guide to Safe and Appropriate Usage of ICT
Be safe – think about the personal information people can find out about you
Be considerate – think about the words/images/videos you deploy on-line
Be good – follow the school rules which are there to enable safe and appropriate access to the web,
including supporting each other
Be wise – make wise choices; remember, your behaviour on-line remains your behaviour
For guidance on how to report issues on-line, see the E-Safety icon on the Firefly homepage:
Library
The library is at the heart of the school – quite literally! Follow the main staircase in the oldest part of the building
to find out what is up there. It’s open from 8.30am until 6.30pm each day (5pm on Fridays), for loans, reference
and as a place to work for 6th formers during private study periods. You can also hire DVDs. There’s a great
range of materials, trained library staff to help you, and events on in the evenings, quizzes and the like, to enjoy
too. There are also books available for you to borrow in the Third Form Common Room.
Lost Property
So that you don’t lose anything which is precious to you, all property and clothes, including games kit, brought to
the School must be clearly and permanently marked with your name. Named items are kept next to the Porterage
office at the back of the Great Hall. Please respect each other’s personal property; any pupil caught stealing may
be asked to leave the school.
Mobile Phones
Whilst the College accepts that these are a useful means of communication, they should not be taken to lessons
or used around the campus. In the L3rd & U3rd you may bring your mobile phone into school; however, they
will be collected in every morning and you are only allowed to use it after 4pm in the privacy of your common
room, not anywhere else on the school campus. If you need to contact your parents at any point during the day,
see your tutor or Mrs Brown.
The Anti-Bullying code considers text and phone bullying to be a serious issue.
New Pupils Checklist

• Be given a map and learn where the different classrooms are
• Have your photograph taken and visit the IT Department
• Be given your timetable, homework planner, and a locker

• NO LESSONS TODAY!
Off Games
If you are not well enough to do games, please inform your tutor by a note, email or phone call from parents.
Open Morning
You are expected to be available to help at all Open Mornings throughout your time at the school. These take
place three times a year (one each term), on a Saturday morning from 8am – 12.30pm. You may be asked to either
help show prospective pupils around or help in the Third Form Common Room.
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education - PSHEE
This is taught through a series of half and full day workshops throughout the year for each year group and in form
time by your tutor. You will learn about drugs, relationships, careers and healthy living, for example.
Arrangements for the PSHEE study sessions are published in each term’s calendar.
Parents’ Meetings
Your parents or guardians will be invited to discuss your academic progress with your teachers at least once a year
at a parents’ evening. If they have any concerns or questions about how you are getting on at any other time they
should email your tutor or Mrs Brown to arrange a meeting to discuss your progress.
Prefects
In the 6th form we ask a number of pupils to carry out some responsibilities which help the staff to run the school.
This group of 20 to 30 school prefects are given a number of perks, as well as being asked to do a number of
duties. Some U6th pupils are asked to be House prefects, too. These prefects have roles which are linked closely
to the house that they belong to.
Registration
It is a legal requirement to register twice a day. You will register in your tutor rooms at 8:20am and in the Third
Form Common Room at 1:50pm. Don’t be late!
12
Rooms – Where your classes are
Make sure that you know your way around! Your tutor will help you with this. There is a helpful plan of the
College Campus at the back of this handbook and a list of rooms and locations too. If you get lost in your first
few weeks, don’t worry, someone will help you.
School Shop – The College Tailor
The School shop is located at 98 St. George’s Road, Kemptown, Brighton, BN2 1EE; telephone 01273 604030.
It is called ‘The College Tailor’ and it is the school’s supplier of all school uniform, sports kit, sports equipment
and stationery.
School Council
The purpose of the School Council is to provide a forum at which the pupils at the College, through their elected
representatives, are able to air issues of general concern and make proposals for changes or innovations that they
believe will improve the life of the members of the school.
Smoking
Brighton College is a no smoking establishment (this includes the use of e-cigarettes). You will be disciplined if
you are caught and your parents will be informed.
Sport
Sport is a key part of Brighton College life and there are many sporting options to try, both in games and extra-curricular activity time. On a Friday, you will join with the prep school for a training session. This means school will finish at 4.40pm on Friday (in time for buses). There will also be some joint training sessions for some matches. You will have a few fixtures on Saturdays and three long games session each week on a Monday, Wednesday & Friday. If you are chosen to represent the College in a match, well done! This is an honour and a privilege and we expect that you will turn up. You too should view it as such. Please make sure to turn up on time, in the correct kit, and to play your hardest. If you are not able to play, contact sport staff as early as possible so that a substitute can be found.
Theft
Please respect each other’s personal property; any pupil caught stealing will be asked to leave the school.
Trips and Visits
These form part of the College’s outward-looking ethos. Some go abroad and some are subject related, e.g. field
trips and outing days. You will have lots of opportunities to join in – make sure you don’t miss out! And when
on the trip enjoy the experience.
Tutors
This is the person to whom you should address your questions about day to day issues, any worries or concerns.
You will meet with your tutor in House twice a day at registration time and again on Fridays for tutor time. Your
tutor will monitor your academic progress as you make your way through the school.
13
Brighton College: Bounds 2017/18
Once pupils have come on site to register in the morning, the following bounds stand for the duration
of the school day, until pupils have officially left the school to go home:
On the West Side of the campus
1. No exit/entrance through Sutherland Gate unless on an organised school activity such as Games
2. Sutherland Road out of bounds, including the snack van and Clifford’s newsagents
On the East side
3. Exit through Walpole Gate only to go across to the Learning Support Centre in Bellevue Gardens or, for
Sixth Form boarders with permission, to 8 Walpole Road
4. Pupils are not to walk further uphill along Walpole Road, i.e. should not turn left out of the gate
On the South side
5. Only use the Main Gate. Do not use the trades / exit gate; this is for vehicle access only
6. Do not go further east than Walpole Road unless walking to the Jubilee Ground
7. Only cross Eastern Road via the zebra crossing. Keep your wits about you when crossing
8. Access Kemp Town only via College Road or College Terrace

(a) Do not go further south towards the sea via side roads such as Burlington Street or the
alley by the bakery
(b) Do not go further west than the dry cleaners by Montague
(c) Do not go further east than the last shop (Ground Coffee House)
10. Pubs, bars, off licences and betting shops are out of bounds.
Remember:
Sixth Formers may visit Kemp Town during break, lunch and free periods without signing out.

a. Going to Montague Place
Follow the prescribed route:
Cross Eastern Road by the zebra crossing
Walk on the pavement down College Road, crossing at the southern end by Lloyds Bank
Walk on the pavement west on St George’s Road to Montague Place
Walk in 2s or 3s on the pavement, do not engage with members of the public any more than is necessary,
and always politely.
Do not enter any shops and do not eat in the street. Walk quickly and sensibly
b. Crossing Eastern Road outside the College
Pupils must use the zebra crossing; it is important to stop at the crossing to give motorists the opportunity to
see you in good time and come to a stop. As a matter of courtesy acknowledge the motorists who stop for
you.
When travelling around between areas of the school and off campus during the school day, pupils
should remember they are judged by the public and not do anything negative which may prompt
them to contact the school! They should be courteous, polite and sensible.
Pupils’ Guide to being Ambassadors of the College
Pupils, parents, staff and Old Brightonians are proud to be part of the Brighton College community, and rightly
so. Inevitably, independent schools are under constant scrutiny by their local residents, the public generally and
the press, and some people take pleasure in finding fault. This guide is designed to help you when you are in public
places in school uniform or on school business:
Be Considerate
Be mindful and sensitive of other people, behaving towards others as you would want them to behave towards
you, e.g.:
give way to the elderly or to pushchairs; avoid grouping together and blocking the pavement
queue in orderly fashion at bus stops and offer your seat to others on public transport
maintain your smart look – e:g: shirts tucked in, ties done up
mind your language
Be Careful
Hopefully, members of the public will be polite and happily co-exist alongside you. Unfortunately, not all are
decent members of society and you need to be aware of your surroundings and those around you. It is always
helpful to report any suspicions or incidents to Security, your HMM and your parents ASAP.
16
Campus Layout (see map below) and Teaching Locations Make sure that you know your way around! There is a helpful plan of the College Campus below, with a list of
