THEORIESOFCULTURALSTUDIES(ITB6100)PhDinCulturalStudiesDepartmentofHumanities&SocialSciencesYıldızTechnicalUniversityKeremKaraosmanoğlu(Ph.D)e-mail:[email protected]:(212)3834496room:AZ-03officehours:byappointmentclassroom:online.yildiz.edu.trweb:keremblog.netCourseDescription:Thiscoursepresentsthestudentswithanoverviewofclassicalandcontemporarytheoriesinculturalstudies.Theevolutionofsocial&culturaltheoryfromtheeighteenthcenturyonwardswillbeanalyzedwithreferencetomajorthemesduringtheterm.Theaimwillbetounderstandandmakesenseof‘culturaltheory’togetherwith‘socialtheory’thatseemstofollowadifferenthistoricalandthematictrajectorywhencomparedtopoliticaltheory,sociologicaltheoryorhistoryofphilosophy.Duringthelecturewewillattempttocomprehendtheviewsofmajortheorists,theirrelationtoothertheoriesandthewayinwhichcertainconceptsarecoveredandanalyzedintheirtheories.Amongthemajorthemesthatarerelevanttoourdiscussionwithregardstosocial&culturaltheorywillbesociety,community,identity,difference,subjectivity,individual,culture,structure,agency,modernity,postmodernityandconsumption.AsthisisamustcourseforthePhDprogramitisanessentialobligationandextremelyimportantforthestudentstodoallreadingsforeachweekbeforecomingtoclass.Allstudentsareexpectedtoattendeachsessionandparticipateasmuchaspossibletothediscussionsinclass.GradingSystem:FinalExam:40%MidtermExam:40%Presentation:20%MidtermExam:MidtermExamwilltakeplaceinthemiddleofthetermwith2or3questionstobeansweredin2hours.

FinalExam:Finalexamwilltakeplaceattheendofthetermandwillbeconductedinopen-booktake-homeformat.Thestudentsareexpectedtoanalyseandarticulatethetheoriesthathavebeencoveredduringtheterm.Presentation:Eachstudentwillpickupatheory/theoristatthebeginningofthetermandmakeapresentationofonespecificarticleoracombinationofmorethanonearticle.Themaximumdurationforeachpresentationwillbe30minutes.Theaimwillbetoclearlysummarizeandreviewtherelevantreadingsinthelightofallwhatwehaveseeninclasssofar.
