OUR VISION
Historic Wesley Church in
downtown Dover, Delaware
is an open and welcoming
congregation, which makes
disciples of Jesus Christ by
proclaiming God’s love
through
✞A variety of Worship Ser-
vices which speaks to both
heart and mind,
✞Bible study, fellowship,
and nurture which lead to
meaningful and disciplined
Christian living,
✞Christian outreach minis-
tries which serve those near
and far,
✞Combined activities which
involve other area churches
and faith communities.
Wesley Church welcomes
all individuals and seeks to
minister to the spiritual and
physical needs and con-
cerns, as God reveals them
to us.
Members and neighbors of
all ages and stages in life,
the homeless, hungry, and
hurting, employees of the
various levels of govern-
ment, including the military,
and people in the nearby
education and business com-
munities.
Wesley Church’s promi-
nent steeple is a sign of
our commitment to our vi-sion and is a beacon of faith,
hope, and love in this state
capital.
Please continue to hold Wesley Church in prayer
as we prepare for our new worship schedule, which starts Sept. 9. This is vitally important. All worship services are in the Sanctuary.
8:00 a.m. Early Worship (no music)
8:45 a.m. Adult Sunday School 9:45 a.m. Worship, Children's and Adult Sunday School 11:15 a.m. Worship and Adult Sunday School if interest
We will be conducting a survey regarding interests for Adult Sun-day School class topics and curriculum. Look for that in the Sept.
newsletter and in the bulletin. Please remember the reasons for making these changes (It has been an ongoing conversation in Wesley Church for many years.)
We now have an Adult Sunday School hour I can attend. Focus upon Spiritual Formation is a primary goal for our Church. The
schedule helps us reach our goal. In addition, the new schedule ad-dresses the 11:00/11:15 worship hour. This schedule is on a pilot basis. The length of the pilot is de-
signed to include Christmas and Easter. As Easter falls at the end of March, our evaluation period is April and May, 2013. If you have
data to add to the process, please share it in writing if possible, so we can keep good track of it. I hope and pray you will be a part of a small group. There will be
opportunities on Sunday mornings, Monday night (Men's Covenant Disciples), Tuesday morning (LeRoy Jones Men's Study), Wednes-
day nights 1st and 3rd weeks (after dinner, I will be teaching), and Thursday Noon (Pastor Harry will be teaching "The God I Never Knew").
The 11:15 worship service will be similar to the 9:45 service, but not identical. In addition to hymns with the organ and the printed
order of service, there will be a broader musical repertoire, more variety in the liturgy (it won't be call and response every week), weekly communion (this is the official position of the UMC), and
over time other creative elements like drama will be included.
You are invited to come to an ice cream social on Aug. 15 at 6:30 to hear more about the ideas and share in conversation about this.

JEREMIAH UPDATE

Huston. If there are more of you that we have missed, please contact the
church office, 678-9626 or me, 678-0974. There is also still time to con-tribute.

What DOES a pastor do? I find that teenage boys are the ones who most often have the guts to ask me this question straight out. The underlying premise is “I know you lead worship, but what do you DO with the rest of your time?”
So I am going to take a stab at answering the question here. I expect that after this article is pub-lished, I will think of a dozen things I have forgotten to share.
I work between 50-60 hours per week. Many of those hours are in the church. Some of them are out in the community, in the homes of members, in hospitals, nursing homes, at my dining room table, etc. I begin my day by getting up with my family, and being a part of the morning routine. Then I
typically do some yoga for Morning Prayer and meditation, and get ready for the day. I usually arrive at the church between 9-9:30 a.m. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights I am typically at
the church in meetings until 8:30 or 9:00 (and sometimes later!). I take Monday as my Sabbath day. The other six days, I work. Saturday is generally lighter, but rarely a full day off. During a typical week, I spend time preparing to preach, usually 8-10 hours per week. Sometimes
it’s more. Occasionally it’s less. I also spend several hours per month on worship planning, choosing prayers, etc.
I spend time listening. On an average week, I usually have at least one “deep conversation.” This is when someone shares with the struggles in their life, and I try to be a prayerful, loving, and (hopefully) helpful presence. I am always humbled and honored by these times. I sometimes have
the privilege of saying “in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.” I am not sure there is a great-er privilege than sharing those words with another person.
I usually spend an hour or so per week making phone calls and writing notes to people for whom we are praying, and letting them know of God’s love for them. I also pray every Wed. with Diane
Boyce for about an hour (you are invited!) We pray for the church, the community, the world, and the needs that have been shared with us. Staff meetings are Tuesdays at 9:30 and last until 11:00 or 11:30. Chris Countryman and I meet
most weeks on Thursday mornings for two hours. I am also intentional about checking in with the staff, to ensure we are working well together, and our staff has what they need to do their jobs well.
We have excellent pastoral staff. Harry is truly gifted in the ministry of pastoral care and Chris is truly gifted in ministry with young people. Our office, custodial, music, and preschool staff are all strong, gifted, and good at what God has given them to do. I am grateful to God every day for them.
I spend a lot of time in administration. This means being in conversation (often via email) with members of committees. It means writing, planning, preparing, and overseeing implementation of
everything from new welcome bags, to connecting new members into service, to Walk to Emmaus retreat participation, to budget and expense review, and everything in between. I try to involve as many members of the Body of Christ as possible in this, because this is what I understand my calling
to be about. As Paul says in Eph. 4 we are “to equip the saints for the works of ministry.” As fall approaches, and we get back into our small group sessions with intensity, I will be teaching
more. This will be on 1st and 3rd Wed. nights after dinner. I also am a part of a weekly covenant dis-cipleship for an hour every Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Come Sundays at 8:45 in our new schedule, I am excited to be a part of Adult Sunday School classes, and to eventually teach during some of those
weeks. God usually sends me one curve ball per week. Sometimes it’s a person who needs a hotel room.
Sometimes it’s a person off the street who needs a listening ear. It’s always a time when I feel blessed to be a part of such a thing. I also spend time with folks preparing for membership, baptism, and marriage. The rhythm of this
ebbs and flows, but lately it has been mostly flowing! For membership, we have four classes togeth-er, and other church leaders join us for a week at a time. For baptism, I meet with families in groups
of 2-4 families, for about 1.5 hours, and share a lot of conversation and information about raising children in the faith. Once per month (except summer), I get together with three clergy friends for about 3 hours. This is
precious and vital time. We share struggles, ideas, and everything in between. It is a time of encour-agement and blessing.
The Wesley Crier September, 2012 Page 4
Continued from pg. 3
I also attend Continuing Education events a
few times per year. These are vital to my spir-itual and vocational health. I try to take my four weeks of vacation each year; it is also vital
to my spiritual and vocational health. During the Summer, I have been to Annual
Conference, New Orleans Mission Trip, Jurisdic-tional Conference to choose new bishops, Sum-mer Music Institute at Drew Seminary, and
Camp Pecometh leading Bible study and wor-ship. The summer has a different rhythm, but it
is not a slow time for me. I wish I spent more time sitting and reading spiritual books. I do read widely, but it is never
enough. I wish I spent hours every day in pray-er. I do pray daily; but it is not for hours! I do
make an effort to stop and pray throughout the day. In the spirit of Brother Lawrence, I seek to
pay attention to God’s grace throughout my day. Once per month I see a Spiritual Director for an hour in Middletown, to ensure that I am
staying on the path God has for me. It is always an adventure, suffused with God’s
grace. It is also an exercise in stress manage-ment at times. I know a man who used to serve a 3 point charge on the Shore, who is now an
FBI agent in NYC. He was there through 9-11 and continues to work in the City. Pastoring is
still the hardest job he ever had. I am going to end it here. This article is al-ready too long…and I am sure I am forgetting
things. I am honored to be your pastor. I am grateful
to God for the call to ordained ministry. Thanks for sharing the journey. Pastor Amy

Reminder from the Treasurer/
Financial Secretary
Just a friendly reminder concerning offering envelopes. Last year due to the rising cost of the envelopes we purchased ones without the dates
or numbers preprinted on them. WE NEED YOU to please take a few minutes to put your name
and number on the envelope before you place it in the offering plate. Remember, if the envelope does not have
your name and number clearly indicated, we can-not post the gift to your record-of-giving. The
treasurer only sees your envelope and your gifts are posted from the envelope ONLY. If you give cash and there is no name or num-
ber on the envelope I can guarantee that you will not receive credit for your gift, it is treated as a
plate offering. When you are making out your check to the church you can write one check for the General
and Building fund; if you missed a week or so you can write one check for that also.
Donations or pledges to Jeremiah need to be a separate check enclosed in a separate envelope. We are required to issue quarterly record-of-
giving statements for you and we want to be sure that your gifts are posted correctly.
Thank you,
Marian Hudson,
Treasurer/Financial Secretary
September 7th our Guest Artist will be
Wes Davis. Wes, preached and sang here at Wes-
ley Church in June, he has been writing music and performing about the Eastern Shore for more than two decades.
Please come out, bring a friend, enjoy some dessert and coffee, and be blessed
by Wes’ original music.
I read Alice Small’s obituary in the paper re-cently. Alice and Joe owned a small printing business in Wilmington for many years. Joe died
several years ago. Alice and Joe were devout Methodists. They were strong in their communi-
ty and their church. They were just plain nice people. I first met Joe in the late 1980’s. I was selling copiers and dropped in without an ap-
pointment. Most people are not thrilled to visit with copier salesmen but Joe invited me in and
listened to my presentation. He didn’t buy a copier that day. Over the years we did do busi-ness with each other several times. As generous
as Joe was in many areas of his life Joe was a frugal person. Some would call him tight. He
was a tough negotiator for the best price on things for his business. Some of his vendors
might say he was cheap. My Sussex County an-cestors would probably say he was careful with his money.
The notice of Alice passing made me think about how we see things. I think that where
many people would see problems the Smalls saw opportunity. They saved money where they could to fund generosity where it was needed.
We are entering year two of Extreme Generosity. Last year people made the effort and we in-
creased our giving slightly over the year before. Times are difficult for many people and critical for some. This year we have an opportunity to
help even more. This year let’s clearly define our own wants and needs. If we want a little
less we can help those who need a little more. I close with the words printed on the back of Jo-seph Small’s business card. Every night I turn
my problems over to God. He’s going to be up all night anyway.

A Call for Prayer for our Leadership and Servants
The Nominations & Lay Leadership Committee is the group with the important ministry of discerning and inviting disciples to
serve in our church family.
Every year, we have a Church Conference meeting at which the slate of leaders are presented and voted upon by our Church
family. This year, our meeting is Saturday Dec. 3 at 12:30 p.m.
In preparation for 2013, the NLL is currently seeking your prayer support. We are asking you to pray about how you feel led
to serve, and pray for our church family in this season of discernment. Some of you will receive phone calls specifically asking
you to pray and call us back in the following 2-3 weeks. We are calling folks who are new among us, some who are not cur-
rently serving, some who are about to complete a term, and some that have simply come to mind (we trust this is the Spirit at
work).
If you feel led to serve, and do not receive a phone call, please don’t ignore the prompting of the Holy Spirit! Be in touch with
a member of the NLL and let us know what you are feeling nudged to do. The members are: Doug Boyce, Marilyn Cleeton,
Kim Courtney, MaryAnn Evans, Kim Glanden, Cindy Jones, John Parker, Nancy Royston, Connie Strickland, and Alma Yerger.
As your pastor, I serve as the chair.
As we reach out to folks, we are asking that you pray about serving in leadership. We are also encouraging each person with
whom we speak to be intentional about growing in faith by being a part of a small group. This could be adult Sunday School, or
a small group offered during the week. Spiritual formation is obviously essential for spiritual leaders.
This encouragement extends to each person who is a part of Wesley Church. Are you actively seeking to grow in faith? To
become a person that God depends upon for servant ministry? Be intentional about spiritual growth by being a part of a small
group.
Please pray especially for God to raise up Sunday School Teachers. Several of our teachers are feeling led to serve
in different ways. They have been an enormous blessing in a strong Sunday School Ministry. We are trusting God to raise up
new teachers.
We are also asking EVERYONE to be involved in serving in God’s Church. In our membership vows, we
pledge our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness.
Below is a listing of ways that you may serve within the church. If you are already active in some of these, thank you very
much for your service. If you are not yet active, or would like to become more active, please prayerfully consider these, and
contact the coordinator. As a member of Wesley Church, I ask you to serve in at least two of these ministries.
Your service makes a difference in the life of the church, and the lives God touches through Wesley Church. Thank you for
making a difference. For each area, the coordinator will give you more details to prepare you to serve.
Lay Reader: Lead the procession in worship, lead us in a printed prayer for illumination, read Scripture, and on Communion
Sundays, assist with serving. Contact Charlie Martin [email protected] 302-674-2902.

kitchen, and at the bottom of the elevator and stairs. Sign-up sheet and Greeter Guidelines are in the main hallway outside the
library. Contact Sally Nichols 697-1493.
Usher: Our ushers are an important part of every service. Ushers greet at the top of the stairs and elevator and distribute
worship bulletins. In addition, they count worship attendance, assist with the microphone for morning announcements, collect
the offering, direct people during communion, and other responsibilities. To serve, contact Fran Deats
[email protected] 302-734-7010.
Sound: If you would like to serve by running the sound system and recording during worship, contact Jim Skeans. Sermons

Meals for members: One of the things Wesley church does not have at present is an organized
ministry to take meals to people who are grieving, welcoming a new baby, etc. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, and/or are interested in coordinating this, please contact the office. [email protected] 302-678-9626.
Sunday School teacher or helper: We have wonderful and dedicated Sunday School teachers at
Wesley Church. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, we will equip you to serve in this vitally important way. Contact Chris Countryman [email protected] 302-735-1863.
Nursery helper: Marie Sugalski is our staff person in the nursery each Sunday. We need to have a second person serve at each worship service. You may serve one or more than one service on a Sun-
day morning. During the summer months, our United Methodist Women have been gracious in serv-ing. We are in need of a volunteer coordinator, and volunteers. Contact the office [email protected] 302-678-9626.
Transportation: One of the things Wesley Church does not have at present is an organized ministry
to pick up/take home people who are interested in attending church at Wesley. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, and/or are interested in coordinating this, please contact the office.
[email protected] 302-678-9626.
Vacation Bible School: Every June, we provide a wonderful experience for the children of our com-
munity. Many servants make it a fun time for all. To serve, contact Mardi Pyott Spangler
[email protected] 302-698-3686 or Becky Gill [email protected] 302-335-1645.

There are different kinds of
services to God, but it is the same Lord we are serving.
There are many ways in which God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the
work in and through all of us who are his. The Holy Spirit displays God's power through each of
us as a means of helping the entire church. I Co-rinthians 12: 5-7. My work at Wesley Church was a sign from God
to travel on a spiritual journey. I have found that serving in the capacity of membership secretary
has not only brought me closer to God but has taught me that through my faith, anything is pos-sible. Even though my job has ended; my spiritu-
al journey and my love for Wesley Church and God will continue on forever.
I would like to thank the people and relation-ships that I have developed over my last eight
years, the lasting friendships of others, especial-ly, the office staff (Joann Kulhanek, Pat Riddle-berger, and Cindy Mayan) and of course our
prayer team in the morning of each day. The en-couragement and support I received from the
pastoral staff and the congregation through the difficult times in my life, (my surgery) and my daughter's, Paula's surgery, was a tremendous
help in the healing power of God. All of those cards that I received from individuals gave me
the courage to go back to work. Last but not least, a special thank you to Dr. William Fitzhugh and the SPRC Committee that
believed in me to give me the opportunity to work at Wesley. A very special thank you to the
ministers that I have worked faithfully along side Pastor Harry Baxter and Pastor Don Godwin, whom I was with the last eight years, and Pastor
Amy for her support. The growth of the church was a project close to
my heart, the Jeremiah III project (our beautiful elevator), that not only helps me with getting my daughter, Peggy, to the Sanctuary but will contin-
ue to help all worshipers. This was a project well-done! Thank you one and all for your contribu-
tions for this project and, especially, Mr. Skeans, who over-saw the project from beginning to end. Also, a special thank you to my family for their
faith in me and supporting me on my spiritual journey.
With blessings, Patsy Brown

Join Team Pecometh at the Baltimore Running Festival
Last October Patti Blakeney, Shawn Darrell, Janese Middleton, Kelly Rampmeyer and I formed Team Pecometh to run at the Baltimore Running Festival. We ran to raise money for Pecometh, bringing in
over $3,600 in donations. This year’s Baltimore Running Festival is Saturday, October 13 and we’re looking to expand our team and the amount of money raised. Here’s how it works:
• Decide which race to run: 5k, Half-Marathon, Marathon or Marathon Relay. If you decide on the re-lay, try to find three other team members to run with you, or we'll help you to form a team.
• We pay the registration fee and you agree to raise at least $300. We’ll provide a link to our online donation page so that you can use social media to invite friends and relatives to support your efforts. Plus, we have some great incentives to raise even more. The milestones are cumulative, so the more
you raise, the more perks you get:
Raise $500+ and we’ll give you a $20 voucher to a Little Italy restaurant for your pre-race carbo loading.
Raise $1,000+ and you get a one-night, space available, stay at the Pecometh Riverview Retreat
Center (RRC). Raise $2,000+ and we’ll reimburse you up to $100 toward a hotel room in Baltimore. You get an
additional $100 for every $1,000 you raise above $2,000. Special Director's Challenge: Raise more money than I do and you get an additional night at the
RRC.
You get to keep your "Team Pecometh" tech shirt that we give you to wear on race day (I run in my 2011 shirt all the time).
Of course, you also get the shirt and SWAG (stuff we all get) from the Baltimore Running Festival. But, we all know it's not just about the goodies. Helping Pecometh is what really counts. I'm aiming
for two personal records this year: breaking 4:13 in the marathon AND raising over $2,500. I hope you'll join me on Team Pecometh. It's a great time for a great cause. If you're ready, Email me at
[email protected] to let me know which race you will run, and I’ll get you registered. Let’s do this. Grace and Peace,
Jack Shitama, Executive Director
P.S. If you know a runner who might want to join us, please let them know about this. Thanks!

The Game Show Network has introduced a new show this summer. Tune in on Thurs-
day evenings to this hour-long Bible challenge and test your knowledge of the Bible along
with the contestants.
Hour-long game shows are, outside of reality TV programs certainly not the norm. This
one, however, has a very particular reason for a longer run time: contestant testimonies.
In The American Bible Challenge, three groups of three players each are competing to win
money, not for themselves, but for a charity or ministry. For example, in the premiere,
"The Gospel Geezers" are playing for Operation Christmas Child of Samaritan's Purse Min-
istries; "The Suburban Saints," are playing for City Crossroads of San Francisco; and
"Minnie's Food Pantry" are playing for the feeding center they themselves started. These
contestants are allowed to share the true stories of their coming to Christ and what the
Lord has called them to.
