On November 16, 2004, twelve picketing farmers and two children were killed and hundreds were injured when police and soldiers dispatched by then Labor Secretary stormed a blockade by plantation workers.
The protesters were pushing for fairer wages, increased benefits and, more broadly, a greater commitment for national land reform.
POVERTY
The Philippines is the 57th poorest country in the world out of 183 countries ranked by the International Monetary Fund in 2011.
Take note, there are 196 countries in the world.
EDUCATION
4 out of 10 children (12-15 years old) are not in school. Only 6 out of 10 children entering first year reach and complete the fourth year. The number of working children (15 and above) increased. Almost only 60% of those who enter high school reach and complete the last year.The basic pay of a newly-hired teacher is only P15,649/month (Teacher I level)The teacher to student ratio nowadays is 1:65The book to user ratio is 3:1
ENVIRONMENT
Decades of reforestation left only 3% of the original coverOnly about 10% of sewage in the Philippines is treated or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. The rest goes back to nature – usually the sea.
EMPLOYMENT STATE
As of April 2012, the unemployment rate in the country has improved from 7.2% in April last year to 6.9%.
But still, that is a whopping 2.764 million Filipinos out of our 40.06 million strong labor force.
A Filipino president only got to serve the country from 1998 to 2001 as he was ousted by “People Power 2” due to allegations of corruption and other anomalies and scams, particularly plunder, during his administration.Another Filipino president whose reign extended to nine (9) years during her administration is currently under arrest for criminal charges of electoral sabotage.A Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines was found guilty of violating Article II of the Articles of Impeachment alleging that he intentionally did not declare his multi-million dollar accounts in his SALN.
