2G
The most important technology in the previous decade :- GSM ( Global System for Mobiles)
The most popular standard for mobile phones in the world.
Makes international roaming very common between mobile
phone operators.
Differs from its predecessors in that both signaling and speech
channels are digital.

CDMA ( Code Division Multiple Access).
A channel access method utilized by various radiocommunication technologies.
The idea of allowing several transmitters to send information
simultaneously over a single communication channel.
This allows several users to share a bandwidth of frequencies.
Most widely known application of CDMA is for cellphones.
As of 2012, there were more than 500 million CDMA cellularusers worldwide, with more than half in Asia.

2.5 G
GPRS ( General Packet Radio Service)
A standard for wireless communications runs at speeds up to 115 kbps,
compared with GSM systems' 9.6 kilobits.
Allow users to take part in video conferences and interact with multimedia
Web sites and similar applications using mobile handheld devices as well
as notebook computers.
Easier to make applications available to mobile users because the
faster data rate means that middleware currently needed to adapt
applications to the slower speed of wireless systems are no longer
needed.

EDGE( Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution)
Provides nearly three times faster speeds than the GPRS
system.
The theoretical maximum speed is 473 kbps for 8 timeslots butit is typically limited to 135 kbps in order to conserve spectrum
resources.
Both phone and network must support EDGE, otherwise thephone will revert automatically to GPRS.
EDGE is considered a pre-3G radio technology.

3 G UMTS ( Universal Mobile Telecommunication System).
Offers a consistent set of services to mobile computer and phone users,no matter where they are located in the world.
UMTS is based on the GSM communication standard.

4G
The Newest 4G technology- LTE ( Long TermEvolution ) from the UMTS.
It is a partnership project called as 3GPP . It is making
news everywhere because of its great fidelity and
speed.
It is also compatible with GSM, so the telecom
operators can deploy LTE on their current GSM
Technology.
