Mr Leow Siak Fah1939 to 2015
The Members of The Tanglin Club record with deep regret the passing of Mr Leow Siak Fah.
Mr Leow Siak Fah was the President of the Club from 2007 to 2008, and was also the Convenor of Development, and Deputy Convenor of Property during the same period. Mr Leow was a man of courage who would stand up for his beliefs, and openly supported those he believed in. Ironically, he would even defy odds to achieve this, as his business in insurance relied on statistical odds. Perhaps the legacy that should be accorded to SF (his pet name to friends) is the gift of opera to Singapore, of which he institutionalised in the Singapore Lyric Opera, a company he promoted vigorously.
Whilst we will miss his pronouncements, and his theatrically-trained commanding tone at future Club assemblies, our fond memories of the songs he loved and lived to sing, will live forever in our hearts. The Club expresses its condolences to his family and friends.

President’s Message

Dear Fellow Members,
By the time this message reaches you, you would have
received the Club’s notification of its Annual General
Meeting (AGM) of the Members of The Tanglin Club which
will be held at the Clubhouse on Monday, 18 May 2015 at
6pm.
Apart from the statutory requirements of receiving and
approving the Report of the Committee on the general
affairs of the Club and the Financial Statement for the FY
ended 31 January 2015 as well as the income and capital
expenditure budget for the FY 1 February 2015 to 31
January 2016, there will be the election of Members of the
General Committee (GC) for the ensuing year and several
Rule Amendments.
In this message I would like to highlight the proposed
amendment to Rule 23A ‘Limited Buy Back Scheme’. The
GC is proposing amendments to Rule 23A for the following
reasons:
1. To allow a Member to sell back his or her Membership
in return for 50% of the prevailing entrance fee, without
there first having to be at least 10 individuals on a
separate waiting list by the specific country of origin of
the selling Member as at present. Instead, the amendment
will introduce only two categories of buy back waiting list:
Singaporean and non-Singaporean. It will also remove the
minimum number requirement on each such waiting list.
2. A proposed maximum of 100 buy backs will be allowed
in a year to be equally divided between Singaporeans and
non-Singaporeans.
3. To allow a Member seeking to sell back his or her
Membership to request the Club to on-sell the Membership
to his or her child—regardless of the child’s nationality—
provided that the child is over the age of 25, and was on
the the Waiting List as at 18 May 2015, and provided also
that the selling Member waives his or her entitlement to
the buy-back price (50% of the prevailing entrance fee).
4. These rule changes could bring in as much as $2.5
million in additional revenue, were 100 buy-backs to take
place in any one year, and more revenue still to the extent
that buy-backs are for the purpose of on-sale to Members’
children against waiver of
the buy-back sum.
A detailed summary of
the various changes
involving and revolving
around Rule 23A will
be communicated to
Members before the AGM
on 18 May 2015.
I would like to take the opportunity to clarify my message
in April where it was written “The outcome effectively
allows the Club to admit new Singaporean Members for
the first time since 2008,…..” What was not expressed was
that the “outcome” I was referring to was the recalculation
of the Membership Composition percentage that would
bring the number of Singaporeans in the Club to about
48.2%. As was explained to Members at the SGM, due to
an administrative error past GCs had been told that the
number of Singaporeans in Club had breached the 51%
limit.
This being the completion of the year for the GC, a thank-
you reception was held for the Members of the various
Sub-Committees on 13 April 2015 and a farewell dinner
to the General Committee will be held on Thursday 14
May 2015. At the latter event, past Presidents will also be
invited to grace the occasion.
It now leaves me to thank my GC Members and the Sub-
Committee Members for their support, contribution and
guidance and to the management and staff for their
dedicated and loyal service. Last and certainly not least, I
would like to express my appreciation to all Members for
giving me the opportunity to serve you. It has been my
pleasure.

Fellow members,
The Club Annual General Meeting is drawing near (18th May). Please come to the meeting to elect your new General Committee, voice your views and concerns, and vote on the proposals and resolutions lined up for the meeting. And do encourage your fellow members to come as well. Your voice and vote matters.
In last month’s issue, I talked about some keys to leading a happy life. I thought I would continue with the theme this month. So here are some more pointers about living a happy life:
Less TV: Studies have shown that happy people tend to watch less TV. Instead, they would do more other activities such as visiting others, or reading more.
Reduce Clutter: When you have a lot of stuff around you, your brain becomes mentally taxed. Your brain becomes overloaded with too much visual clutter and information, and this in turn makes you stressed and overwhelmed. Conversely, when you reduce clutter, you reduce mental stress and gain mental clarity. Good designers of magazines and architecture understand this idea and thus use a lot of white open spaces in their designs to help the eyes relax, and focus on the key features of their design. Less clutter helps the mind relax, and gain clarity.
Healthy eating: I won’t go too much into this point, since there are tonnes of books and articles already written on this topic. Our club library have many books on this subject as well. So feel free to pop in and borrow some books on this topic. Suffice to say, eating healthily helps you feel better physiologically. And that in turn directly affects your well-being.
Slow down: In the modern digital and information age, where the rate of changes and advances in technology has been its fastest ever in the history of humankind, the intuitive thing to do to on our part to keep up is to go faster, go harder. To try and cram more into every working minute. Enter the counter culture, dubbed The Slow Movement, which states that faster is not necessarily better. Carl Honoré, who originally coined the phrase “Slow Movement” back
in 2004, describes the movement as follow, “It is a cultural revolution against the notion that faster is always better. The Slow philosophy is not about doing everything at a snail’s pace. It’s about seeking to do everything at the right speed. Savoring the hours and minutes rather than just counting them. Doing everything as well as possible, instead of as fast as possible. It’s about quality over quantity in everything from work to food to parenting.”
And there are advantages to slowing down. Continues Carl Honoré about the Slow Movement, “Slow Thinking is intuitive, woolly and creative. It is what we do when the pressure is off, and there is time to let ideas simmer on the back burner. It yields rich, nuanced
insights and sometimes surprising breakthroughs… The future will belong to those who can innovate – and innovation comes from knowing when to slow down.”
So slow down. It will improve your sense of well-being, and help you think more clearly.
Stay free of offense: Don’t allow little things in life to offend you. Every
minute of your life is precious. So why waste it on being unhappy about a small matter? Just let go, and start looking for the little things in life to appreciate. They are all around you already. You only have to start looking.
So there you have it. Hope the above points help. And again, I wish you the pleasant, well-engaged, and meaningful life.
Enjoy our magazine!

Staff News
On a hot and humid day on 8 April, two football teams battled it out on the pitch to win the coveted prize of...enduring friendship. It was not a battle of football giants, but between neighbours, as staff from The Tanglin Club and The American Club got together for a friendly face-off. Supporters from both sides turned up after work to cheer their fellow colleagues. The first half saw furious action, with The American Club leading by 2-0, but after a rousing speech by Tanglin’s team captain Jeffrey Paton, the Tanglin ‘Tigers’ bounced back
and surprised the American team, and the game ended 5-3, in favour of Tanglin. The game proved to be more than a chance to let off some steam; a special bond between the two clubs was reaffirmed. There’s already talk to make such matches a regular feature in the staff activity calendar, and with the support of the Club, more staff will volunteer to play. The Tanglin Team thanks everyone who made the friendly match possible, and looks forward to more games soon.
James Ang joined the Tanglin Team in September 2007, and quickly proved himself to be an able co-worker and team leader. James’s quiet and unassuming demeanour belies a fierce pride in his work, which did not pass by Executive Chef Louis Tay’s attention. Punctual, attentive to detail, and focussed are the words often used to describe
James’s professionalism. His junior team mates often seek him out for advice, and James never fails to impart his knowledge in a clear and concise way. Chef Louis is particularly proud of James, and he favours James’s style of management and mentoring the younger staff.
If there was a staff contest for the most friendly face in the Club, Stanley would most probably win it hands down. Stanley joined us in late 2009, and quickly established himself as dependable and approachable. His colleagues in the Tavern noted Stanley’s speed in adapting to the environment, and his deftness
at managing the peak periods that the Tavern is well-known for. His quick wit often wins people over, and his humble attitude is certainly a virtue. His ever present smile is a sign of his always-positive attitude, and his good rapport with Members and staff puts him in good stead as a true service professional.

CHEF ALVIN WONG —
G A M E F O R A N Y T H I N GChef Alvin Wong from the Churchill is someone you can
say “came up from the ranks”. With no formal training,
and just determination and a passion for food inherited
from his uncle, he joined the Raffles Hotel in December
1995 as a doe-eyed trainee. Forgoing his rest days, he
stayed in the kitchens until well into the night, always
under the tutelage of his seniors, as he endeavoured
to pick up every cooking skill he could. For four years
he stayed, and in 1999, armed with culinary knowledge
and skills honed to razor-edge sharpness, he ventured
out to the Tower Club, where he made his mark.
From 1999 to 2006, he created culinary masterpieces
for Bruneian royalty, Hong Kong celebrities, and even
the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his family. “It was the
highlight of my career in the Tower Club,” said Alvin,
“nothing can top that experience.”
Alvin’s appetite for the culinary arts did not stop at
the kitchens. Just like many career-minded chefs out
to make their mark in the world, Alvin participated in
culinary competitions, such as the Food and Hotel Asia
2002 Culinary Challenge, where he earned a Certificate
of Participation, and the Culinaire Malaysia 2009,
where he won a gold medal. Interestingly, Alvin’s most
memorable award was an autographed book from the
Press Club Center, in Hanoi, Vietnam, where he was a
guest chef. The book was peppered with compliments
from the mostly female staff, who were quite taken by
Alvin’s boyish good looks and charming personality.
Although proud of his achievements, Alvin chooses not
to ring his own bell too loudly. He prefers to regale
willing listeners with tales of his boyhood days, when
he first realised his ambition to be a chef. Born and
raised in Kedah, Malaysia, in the idyllic expanses of
rice fields and villages, Alvin would go out with his
relatives and catch game, often bringing the trophies
home to eat. He has tried almost every kind of meat,
from crocodiles, snakes, dogs and wild boar, to pigeons
and other birds not normally found in the meat section
of the supermarket.
“It was my taste for adventure, if you can call it
that, which made me very interested in food. Humble
beginnings, but certainly unusual beginnings in my
foray into the culinary world,” said Alvin.
Alvin’s specialty is European cuisine, particularly
French. In the Churchill Room’s new a la carte menu,
and the new Degustation menu, Alvin’s particular
recommendation is the Leg Confit and Pate of Speck in
Aged Port Wine Jus.
Visit the Churchill Room to try the new menus, and
indulge yourself with fine cuisine made by Chef Alvin
Wong.

WHITE ASPARAGUSPROMOTIONTavernMay
This is the highlight of the foodie
calendar. The white asparagus,
or white gold as it is sometimes
called, is back in season for
a limited period only. The
versatility of asparagus (it can
be steamed, sautéed, boiled,
poached or roasted), the health
benefits, and the delectable soft
and crunchy goodness as you
bite into it, makes it a favourite
vegetable even among those who
eschew eating their vegetables.
Traditionally served with butter,
parsley and potatoes, the Club’s
chefs have put a new spin to this
tasty vegetable, so don’t miss the
chance to try this exciting menu.

Discover the Old World with fine Italian wines, and indulge in an authentic and elegant 4-course dinner specially prepared by guest Chef Domeni Cicconi. Chef Domenico grew up in the city of San Benedetto del Tronto, which is located in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region of central Italy. His influences in the culinary arts stemmed from his younger days, where he watched his mother develop her cooking career working in various hotels and restaurants. As a tourist destination along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, San Benedetto del Tronto is notable for its food and beverage industry.
Having graduated from Istituto Alberghiero Fazzini, Domenico was given the opportunity to work with MotoGP as a private chef to famous Grand Prix motorcycle racers such as Valentino Rossie, Max Biaggi, Roberto Locatelli, and Alex Hoffman. He has also
spent a number of years working with several firms providing professional catering services internationally. Through this, he has garnered the experience and portfolio of working around the world, namely in Europe, the United States, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and now in Singapore. As the Executive Chef of Ristorante Amarone, Domenico has also played a key role in recent culinary contributions during both the Italian Film Festival in Singapore (2014), and the European Union Film Festival (2014).
Being receptive to other cultures and cuisines, Domenico has grown a fondness in educating others in the art of traditional Italian cuisine. Through his culinary creations, he believes that every dish is crafted like a unique painting, to savour and experience individually.

Montelpulciano D’ AbruzzoDOC
This lively and juicy red wine is from the rugged hills of Abruzzi, above the Adriatic coast of central Italy. Solid and enjoyable, this wine bursts with tart cherry and earth flavours, and is sometimes augmented by herbal and floral aromas, and with a mineral complexity. It is resolutely dry, with enough soft fruit to be drinkable when young, yet tannic enough to keep it trim and energetic. It pairs naturally with tomato sauce-based dishes.
$12.95 per glass$64.75 per bottle
Moscato Piemonte DOC
A different interpretation of the Moscato grape allows us to offer this interesting wine. It’s an excellent match with desserts, thanks to the wine’s full body, which is rich and complex. This wine has a straw-yellow colour and honey, ripe fruits, peach and pear aromas. A light citrus fruit scent completes the flavour. It has a mild aromatic taste and a good freshness that bubbles make more incisive.

Hitting the Right Notes This year being the Club’s 150th anniversary, the Choir has gone all out to learn song after song to gear up for our performances lined up till the end of the year. Our repertoire of songs included “This Little Light of Mine”, “All Things Bright and Beautiful”, “You Raised Me Up” and “Moon River”.
Under the reign of conductor Albert Tay, we practiced very hard to showcase an impressive performance at the recent Choir Tea Party held on 25th April. Judging by the turn out and applause, I am glad to know we did not let you down. Thank you so much for your support which has definitely spurred us to work even harder for our next performance during the upcoming Family Day Carnival on 17th May. The Tanglin Club Choir has definitely grown stronger and more confident in our vocal prowess over the years. This is due to the unrelenting effort and time spent at regular practices held every Wednesday at 7.30pm in the Club’s Theatrette. We would very much like to welcome you to join us. If you are shy and would like to bring a friend,
you will be pleased to know that The Tanglin Club Choir now admits guests of members. Where vocal classes held externally could ask for an arm and a foot, here at the Club, joining the choir as a Section Member cost only a fraction of what is being offered outside; an exclusive fee of only $30 per month and your guest, $60 per month (with minimum 2 months sign up). Let Anqi at [email protected] / 66220438 know if you would like to sit in for a complimentary trial class.
As this term draws to a close, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation to our Entertainment Sub Committee Convenor, Ms Judy Ip Harris, Co Choir Section Head, Dr Patricia Hancock Teoh, Conductor, Albert Tay, Events Executive, Ms Anqi Liu and most importantly my fellow Choir Section Members for their support, perseverance and contributions in seeing to the success of The Tanglin Club Choir. I have truly enjoyed my time not only as Co Section Head but also as a part of the choir. As I take my leave, it would be apt for me to say “Music is life, that’s why our hearts have beats.”

HOW A TINY PIECE OF PAPER SHRANK THE WORLD
The Penny Black was the world’s first postage stamp.
Before it existed, mail was paid for by the receiver.
The Penny Black was issued in 1840, as a pre-pay method.
Much more convenient for those involved in running a
large empire.
And at that time there was no Suez Canal.
It took 6 months to sail to India from Britain.
To receive a reply to a letter could take more than a year.
But by 1840 the Penny Black began to change all that.
A steamship would carry the mail to Alexandria, it would be taken down the Nile to Cairo, then overland by
wagon to the Sea of Suez, where it would be loaded onto another steamship to India.
The whole trip could be done in a breathtaking two months. So popular did the faster post become that in 1840,
after the introduction of the Penny Black, tens of millions of letters were sent. This stamp was shrinking the world.
It remains one of the most coveted and most traded stamps there is.
After all, the first stamp printed will always be the first - and you can’t print any more.
Simple economics drive prices, and demand exceeds supply.
In a supply-demand market such as this, if supply cannot be increased the price is likely only to go one way.
A paper by Elroy Dimson (London Business School and Cambridge Judge Business School) and Christophe
Spaenjers (HEC Paris) showed that, last century, British stamps recorded an annualised growth of 7%,
outperforming bonds and even gold*.
Now that is something to write home about.

RISING EXPECTATION EVENING
The monthly balut games for March was postponed at short notice due to the original scheduled date falling during the mourning period of late Mr Lee Kwan Yew, the founding father of Singapore. It was therefore held on 2nd April, which was just a few days before the Easter holidays. Perhaps that was a reason why many baluteers were absent from the monthly meet and only seven turned up for baluting.
Nonetheless, the games turned out to be as exciting and with surprising results. At every round that was played, there were loud cheers for balut being scored. There was a rising expectation that the evening might create a record on total game score with baluts falling literally from the skies.
Lilian Lee achieved the highest score of 609 for the evening and also claimed the highest game score of 145. Her highest game score was closely followed by Nina who notched up 138 points.
The evening’s prizes were awarded to Lilian for Highest Total Game Score, and to Nina for Highest Game Score.

SECTION FUND NIGHT
“Sweet April showers do spring May flowers.” – Thomas Tusser. And so the month of May is upon us!
March was a good month, with the ongoing Joe O’Connor Competition being hotly contested for and we are happy to report that the Billiards Section pulled our weight in the recent TANS Game! We will report on that in next month’s magazine.
Our usual Section Fund Night held on 19th March was well certainly a competitive one with Mr Davin Liok outdoing his opponents to clinch the most wins of the
night! Mr K K Chong dazzled us all with his potting skills and easily clinched the Highest Break prize!
There are a number of friendlies which will be played in the coming months and all Tanglin Club members are welcome to join us – please register your interest with the S&R Counter so that we will contact you in advance.

CELEBRATES FESTIVE EASTER
Easter is one of the most important festivals in the Christian calendar, celebrated throughout the world with great pomp and show. It celebrates the resurrection of Christ, which is the cornerstone of Christian belief. In some parts of the world there are unique folk traditions for the celebration – for example, in Hungary and Slovakia, the young unmarried girls of the villages dress in traditional costumes and parade before the young men who choose their favourite by splashing water on them. This is the only time that the girls don’t mind a dunking! There are however a few things, such as Easter eggs, bunnies and chocolates that are common to Easter celebrations around the world.
The bridge players also celebrated the occasion on the 30th of March 2015. The players were requested to come
attired in pink and the colours of the outfits ranged from pale pink, to shocking pink to fuchsia. The myriad shades of pink lent the room a festive air. The high tea favoured those with a sweet palate with scones and clotted cream, cup cakes and bite sized lemon meringue pies amongst other goodies.
We had seven full tables and the winners were:1st place: Greta Chai and Lavin Mahtani2nd place: Anjna Beri and Deepa Gupta
Christians and non–Christians alike had an enjoyable afternoon!

DARTS MONTHLY LUNCHEON — 14 MARCH 2015
Our regular monthly Darts luncheon, on the second Saturday of every month, provides a platform for the enjoyment of food and friendly participation in fun and games.
The afternoon began with a mixture of Malay and Indian cuisine consisting of rojak vegetable salad with a special peanut sauce, Malay curry chicken, long green bean vegetables and healthy desserts of longan almond jelly and chocolate cream cups topped with golden balls of good luck and eternal happiness. Our talented chefs out-did themselves again.
Exciting Darts games were played with many members bringing their personal fancy new darts with the latest technology of compressed tungsten shafts and automatic tight grip when hitting the dart board. The weight of the darts is also an important factor for champions. As the afternoon progressed, it became clear who the champions were - those with the new technology darts. Many games were played to develop the skills of accuracy, positioning and balance.
We look forward to seeing you next month for lunch and more darting fun and games.

MARCH IN-HOUSE GOLF GAME
The March In House game at the challenging Sembawang course was dominated by the Continental Europeans. Thomas Kupfer from Switzerland won with 36 points closely followed by Jurgen Mertiens and Wolfgang Hollerman, both from Germany, with 34 points. Jurgen also came very close to an elusive “hole in one”, unfortuntately not on one of the designated Nearest the Pin holes! Nearest the Pin winners were Chan Fu Gui and Lee How Sheng. The Sembawang course as usual was in good condition and the weather held off to allow everyone to finish before the late afternoon rain. Upcoming events are our 150th Anniversary Charity Golf at Jurong on 13th May and the Colonial Cup Game with the American and British Clubs at Raffles on 22nd May. The Charity Golf on 13th May promises to be great occasion with golf followed by a Gala Dinner in the Churchill Room. Hole in One prizes include a Range Rover car, gold golf clubs and whisky tasting. Cost is $350 per person including lunch, goody bag, golf and dinner with all surpluses going to Special Olympics Singapore. See posters or contact the S&R office for full details.

ENDURANCE TRAINING
In light of the Tanglin Club Annual Indoor Triathlon in May, we have had 2 races since, the 50km Spinning challenge in October 2014 and the recent February and March 150km rowing challenge. Periodization is very important in races like this. Same for endurance sports, like a full marathon, mileage build up is very important for one’s safety. A good training intensity to maintain for endurance race is between 70% up to 85% Target Heart Rate (THR). Following is an example of calculating THR@ 85%. THR = [(220 – AGE) – RESTING HEART RATE ]X 85% + RESTING HEART RATE. For example, a 30 year old person with a resting heart rate of 65; THR is [(220 – 30) – 65 ] X 85% + 65 = 171.25 BPM
Examples of good endurance training one can easily engage in can vary from jogging to brisk walking to a swim. In the context of the gym, we have the elliptical, treadmill, bikes, rowing machine and even the Kettlebells and battling rope. Yes you read correctly, the Kettlebells and battling rope can be good alternatives to cardio training. However one should only apply the Kettlebell swings and battling rope in an interval fashion. Further to that, it is good to do recovery training as part of

LAWN BOWLS SECTION
The long delayed paired games for 2014 were finally played out, and Graham Dare & Zoher Motiwalla emerged the champions.
Four members from our Section participated in the National Lawn Bowls Tournament held at the Kallang Bowl on 2 week-ends in March. Zoher Motiwalla, our veteran bowler and our Club’s champion emerged runner-up.
The new season’s competitions, the singles games and the 773 paired games, have started. These are played on Wednesdays and Sundays. And despite their busy work schedule, participants have turned the bowling green into a hive of activities.
The National League Paired Games are currently being played at our TC Lawn Bowl Green on Wednesdays, commencing at 7pm.

CLAYMORE CUP
On Saturday, March 7th, The Tanglin Club renewed its
rivalry with its friendly neighbour The American Club
for the 2015 edition of the Inter Club Squash Cup,
appropriately dubbed the Claymore Cup.. This is the
3rd year the squash rivalries have continued with TC
being winners during the past 2 years. This year’s
game was an “away” game with American club battling
to wrest the cup off TC on home turf.
A team of 12 from either side played off in a different
format where a total of 48 games were played, which
ensured the games went on well late into the evening.
Tanglin took an early lead & was in control of that
lead thorough the event. Despite a few close individual
games, as the evening wore down the result was a
forgone conclusion with TC emerging winners by a 14
-10 margin !
Dinner with drinks were in abundance & well provided
for by our gracious hosts as a few stayed back to enjoy
a bit of friendly banter over curry & drinks.
Kudos to the 12 TC players in ensuring the Claymore
cup remains well entrenched at TC for another year.

Swimming | Sports & Recreation
Many of you will be familiar with Gregory Burns, he was at the Club in the month of March conducting numerous motivational talks and workshops with the staff and members and he also met with our Tanglin Torpedoes swimmers during one of their training sessions.
Greg shared with the swimmers on how he overcame the odds from learning to swim as a child and moving on to compete in the Paralympics. Gregory competed in three Paralympic Games as a member of the USA Disabled Swim Team, winning numerous gold and silver medals and breaking four world records.
Our swimmers are encouraged by Greg to give their best at training. The swimmers had a great session. Thank you Greg!
Swim MeetsWe had a very exciting start for the first quarter of the year. Our team had attended 2 Merlion Swim meet hosted by the British Club and the ACSian Falcon swim team in February.
On March 15, the Tanglin Club hosted the Neptune League swim meet. This is the first of five Neptune League swim meets in 2015. We have swimmers from the British Club, Singapore Island Country Club, Swiss Club and Hollandse Club.
Our swimmers swam well and we do have some young budding swimmers. It was a exciting morning.

TEN PIN BOWLING FOR THE TANS GAMES AT SSC
It is quite an experience to participate in the Ten Pin Bowling for the TANS games at SSC. I was roped in at the last minute as the more experienced were away. I told everyone I was scoring under 50 and would make a terrible addition but the group was so encouraging.
Six male members, Eugene, MC, Vincent, Thomas, William and Tony were in the two teams supported by two ladies, Gladiss and myself. There is a special camaraderie that is generated when people get together for a common purpose.
Looking around at the other teams particularly the NUSS team, we felt we were the oldest and so was bound to lose. But it did not dampen our spirit and we played our games with great enthusiasm and fun. So it was no surprise when we came in last for the bowling but came in third for the overall games! But we had a whale of a time and quickly became firm friends.

THE BURNING ROOMby Michael ConnellyDetective Harry Bosch tackles a cold case unlike any he’s ever worked, in the new thriller from #1
New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly. In the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit, not many
murder victims die almost a decade after the crime. So when a man succumbs to complications from
being shot by a stray bullet nine years earlier, Bosch catches a case in which the body is still fresh,
but any other evidence is virtually nonexistent. Now Bosch and his new partner, rookie Detective
Lucia Soto, are tasked with solving what turns out to be a highly charged, politically sensitive case.
Starting with the bullet that’s been lodged for years in the victim’s spine, they must pull new leads
from years-old information, which soon reveals that this shooting may have been anything but
random. In this gripping new thriller, Michael Connelly shows once again why Harry Bosch is “one
of the greats of crime fiction” (New York Daily News).

News | Library
Fellow Members,
We have just concluded the survey on our Library and Reading Room. We opened the survey for one month, and Members were offered options of completing a questionnaire on printed copy, or online. The survey covered frequency and reason for usage, genre preferences in our collection, services, the need for renovation with questions pertaining to space and location, and also anticipated future needs.
We have not completed a full analysis of the findings, but I wanted to share some of the top-line results. Printed copies of the survey results are available for browsing at the Library and Reading Room, and an e-copy is available on our website at www.tanglinclub.org.sg/facilities/main-library.html.
Renovation, Space, Location• 81% feel the Main Library needs to be renovated;• 75% feel the Library requires more space;• 65% feel that the Library and Reading Room must be
adjacent to each other;• 66% like the idea of the Library merging with the Reading
Room; and• 58% support the relocation of the Library to the S&R
Complex for more space but 73% don’t want the Reading Room to be at the S&R Complex.
At first glance, the above results suggest we keep both rooms in the main clubhouse and continue to have them adjacent to each other or merge the two spaces. Adjacency also carries an advantage, staff can continue to help manage the periodicals collection in the Reading Room.
“The only thing that you absolutely have to know,
is the location of the library.” ― Albert Einstein
Collection and Service • 71% do not want more electronic reading material in the
Library;• 59% do not want more ‘large print books’ and 62%
would not borrow audio books;• 64% want beverage service in the reading room;• 69% want PC access (although there were many
comments about noise from PCs);• 80% do not use the on-line catalogue, or are unaware
there is one; and• 80% do not use the self-check machine, or are unaware
there is one.
And there were many compliments for the staff.
Supplementary statistics• 118,750 Books and DVDs were checked out last year, of
which Books formed 51%;• 2,015 unique members borrowed books or DVDs in the
year ending November 2014;• 9,741 visits recorded by the Gantry in August 2014; and• Club-wide survey of 1000 responses, indicates that
64% are satisfied with the library, 35% neutral, and 1% dissatisfied.
More details on our Library can be found in our Annual Report, which includes data on spend and loan rates. We will continue to engage our Members as we progress through the Library renovation plan. As I end my term as Library Convenor, I take this opportunity to encourage you to continue sending in your suggestions for Books and DVDs.

HUNT FOR EASTER EGGSIt was not one, but two Easter bunnies who graced the occasion on Easter Sunday. After a brief and sudden shower in the morning threatened to derail the hunt for Easter Eggs, the skies mercifully opened up, and children and their parents were out in full force around the playground looking for some very wet eggs. Undeterred by the slippery surface, our young hunters found all the eggs, and proceeded to the Wheelhouse Function Room for a well-deserved break of movies and cookies. Meanwhile, the dynamic duo of bunnies made their rounds all over the main Clubhouse, and visited the Churchill Room, Tea Room, Fireplace, and the Wheelhouse. The children were beside themselves, and rushed to hug the bunnies, and some adults couldn’t help themselves, too!
