Anatomy
The study of the shape and structure of an organism’s body and the relationship of one part to another
Physiology
the study of the function of each body part individually and the overall function of each body system as a whole

Based on your previous health science class, explain in 3-5 sentences what the anatomical position of the human body looks like.

Students will be able to…
Define the terms “anatomy” and “physiology”
Identify body sections, planes, and regions including the associated organs in each, through completion of an anatomical language activity
51.01 Remember structural organization
Who was one of the first people to observe and document the signs and symptoms of the human body?
Who was one of the first people to take a “deeper” look into the human anatomy?
So how do we study the parts of the body and their functions today?

4) Evaluate factors that contribute to effective communication and explain how these factors contribute to the development of quality patient care. Using role-play, demonstrate practices to effectively manage communication barriers, cultural differences and clients with special needs.
10) Demonstrate an understanding of basic medical terminology in order to monitor patient/client status through:
a. History and Physical including but not limited to: family, environmental, social, and mental history
b. Brief Head to Toe Assessment noting normal vs. abnormal findings
c. Vital Signs Assessment (VS)
d. Height/weight, BMI /Calculation
e. Specimen Collection
71.01 Remember structural organization
Students will be able to…
Use medical terminology to identify body sections, planes, and regions including the associated organs in each, through completion of an anatomical language activity
Explain in a written summary why it is necessary to understand and use these terms to communicate effectively in healthcare

First we will watch a 14 minute video explaining the various anatomical terms we NEED to know. You will write down as many as you can, then we will review after the video in case you miss any.

How would you use these terms in different ways?

What does superficial mean?

Body Cavities
How wouldyou describewhat a bodycavity is?
161.01 Remember structural organization
Body CavitiesIn your notes: write
down as many organs as you can that reside in the thoracic cavity.
Is the bladder located in the abdominal or
pelvic cavity? Is the nasal cavity superioror inferior to the buccal cavity? Is the thoracic cavity anterior or posterior to the spinal cavity?

Draw a similar diagram.Make it the size of your Notebook paper.
Label the quadrants and regions as we watchthe video.
We will review after thevideo in case you miss any.
We will discuss the organs related to these regions morein depth when we study the digestive and urinary systems.
Based on the image can you identify the organs within
each quadrant?

Think.Pair.Share:
In what type of scenario would it be important to know the regions of the abdominal cavity? Why?
Which regions do you think are the easiest to
remember?
In your small groups complete the lab activity tab labeled anatomical language.
-You will be provided with the labels
You need to choose one person to be the body regions model (they will lay on the floor), Choose a different person to be the anatomicalpositions model (they will lay on the floor)
-For the first 10 minutes, work as a group to label as many body regions as you can remember without looking them up. Then check your answers and add regions you did not know.
-Now take 10 minutes, work as a group to label as many anatomical positions without looking. Then check your answers/add positions you did not know.
Follow the directions and complete the rest of the Activity.
-You will need to draw your own models for labeling.

Working in small groups you will use play-do to practice identifying the anatomical planes, directions, quadrants, and regions.
You will create play-do human figures, use a plastic knife to “dissect” or “cut” your figure into the various anatomical terms .
Label each description on a piece of paper.
Each person will then create and write down two questions related to these terms. Quiz each other on your questions.
You will turn your questions in to me as part of a grade for today’s activity.
Explain in a quality paragraph why it is important for health care professionals to be able to not only understand but also use the anatomical terms we have discussed today. Give a specific example of when or how and with what specific terms.
