As the world’s first pictorial newspaper, The Illustrated London News was a revolution in publishing. Acting as the television of its day, The ILN brought world events into British homes, dramatically illustrated like never before.
The ILN celebrated its centenary with an exclusive, intimate portrait of the royal family – a relationship that had started with the very first issue. In the 21st century, exclusive content is at the heart of ILN’s storytelling.
Current events, especially in wartime, were the backbone of The Illustrated London News’ storytelling and it commissioned its own artists to document the news. A week after the First World War broke out, The ILN launched a separate weekly newspaper dedicated to the war; 100 years later, ILN launched the website www.illustratedfirstworldwar.com.
Visionary and pioneering
Innovation and technology
Exclusive access
The Illustrated London News was the flagship in a thriving market for illustrated magazines, shaping the field for sister publications and competitors. By the 1920s, The ILN was one of the so-called “Great Eight” of illustrated magazines, united under one umbrella and creating a unique archive that ILN continues to leverage today.

The Illustrated London News employed the finest talent, including artists Terence Cuneo and The Sphere’s Fortunino Matania, and writers such as HG Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie and G K Chesterton. Commissioned editorial continues to be one of our expertises today.
Recognising a new audience with an appetite for a lighter touch, The Illustrated London News launched sister magazine The Sketch, which put high society in the hands of its readers. Today, ILN specialises in engaging with high-end audiences.

W hy would you want to speak to me?” teases Kamala Sukosol as she takes a break from her photoshoot to greet me in one of the grand art deco atriums that are a feature of The Siam Hotel in Bangkok. “I’m only a grandmother,” she laughs,
before gliding regally away to resume her position on the chaise longue for a fi nal round of shots.
That 72-year-old Kamala is a beloved fi gure for her family’s youngest generation is beyond debate — she talks animatedly of just having taken her grandchildren to see the latest Transformers movie. However, it is not her love of kid-centric outings that makes her compelling, but her maverick personality and status as one of the most dynamic businesswomen Thailand has ever produced.
Since being drafted — albeit somewhat reluctantly — by her father Kamol into the Sukosol family business in the early 1970s when he asked her to oversee the development of its fi rst hotel, the Siam Bayshore, in the coastal city of Pattaya, she has helped establish the group as one of Thailand’s strongest independent hospitality brands. Sukosol Hotels now counts fi ve properties in its portfolio: The Bayview, the Siam Bayshore and the Wave in Pattaya and The Sukosol and The Siam in Bangkok.
And all are highly regarded, especially The Siam — the luminous jewel in the Sukosol Hotels crown — which has been garlanded with awards from the travel press since opening back in 2011. The hotel, which was the brainchild of Kamala’s youngest son Krissada
