Stone Bridge Times Volume 12, Issue 4 November 2011
.
Principal‟s Perspective
November is a month where we set clocks back and know that fall is
upon us. The pace is hectic as our first quarter ends on November 4th. Look for report cards to come home on November 16
th. Parent-Teacher Conferences are slated for November 8
th from 7:30 am-9:30 am. This is a chance for you to come
in to speak with any of your student’s teachers for up to ten minutes. To schedule an appointment, please contact Ms. Barr in the Guidance Office at 571-252-2214. If you have any questions regarding your student’s classes, feel welcome to contact the teacher or the guidance counselor. On November 2nd we will send home the pink Pupil-Parent Survey Cards which students will return these to their first
period teachers on Friday, November 4th. These surveys are designed to help our schools receive money for those parents who are in the armed services and/or who work on federal property, either as private sector government contractors or federal workers.
American Education Week runs from November 13-18. During that week we celebrate and bring attention to the positive aspects of education in our
schools. We have so much to celebrate about education in Loudoun. That is a great time to come out to visit our school. On Tuesday, November 15, we will host a parent breakfast from 8:30-10:15 am in the library. On that date our department chairs and administrators will be available to discuss programs and initiatives, highlight components of our School focus for the year, and simply answer your questions. Other events that week include the Safe Teen Driving activity on November 15 and the National Honor Society Induction ceremony on November 16. Please be sure to check the website for any other special activities that week.
Everyone is reminded that the Thanksgiving Holiday runs from November 23rd-25th. As always, especially this year, we thank the many school clubs, students and staff who continue to give back to our community through various volunteer efforts and contributions. We appreciate the efforts of groups such as our Key Club, NHS, DECA, FBLA and Awareness Club who have spearheaded efforts to collect food to assist the Volunteer Loudoun Holiday
Project-Food Coalition, the Backpack Buddies Program as well as the annual FBLA Coat Drive. Please continue to make us aware of those in our school with special needs by contacting our parent liaison, Andrea Sippel at 571-252-2200.
The fall sports season is starting to wrap up. Our teams have been very successful. Football and volleyball teams are ranked in the Washington Post and
state polls. Golf and cross country teams have had great seasons with boys cross country team competing in the regional championship. Our competition cheerleading squad also has advanced to the regional finals.
We will host our PEER Anti-Bullying Assembly on November 10. Last year’s assembly resulted in numerous honors for our PEER students. On November 11th and 12th we will host the All-District Chorus followed on
November 19th by our hosting the DECA Leadership Conference. Also, stay tuned in the newsletter for updated information about our Fine and Performing Arts programs as they head into numerous competitions and collect well deserved recognition.
Please remember to register your cards at Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter
and Target. They have programs which benefit education in our school. Thanks to all of our parents for your continued support and to our PTSO for hosting a breakfast for staff on November 7th.

homecoming with the “Happiest Place on Earth”
theme.

gown when Balfour was here you can still place your
order by mail or on the internet. All orders should be
placed with Balfour. You can find their address and

Library/Media Center
The SBHS library celebrated Teen Read
Week in October with a successful “Visual Journaling
Workshop” led by Mr. Eric Scott, art teacher and
author at Stone Bridge High School. Students made a
visual journal scrapbook page under the guidance of
Mr. Scott, and the library provided dessert. Students
who are beginning research projects during the second
quarter are encouraged to use the subscription
databases that are posted on the SBHS library web
page. Passwords to these websites for home use are
available in the library at the circulation desk. In
addition to these databases, SBHS library contains
over 100 ebooks in its collection. These electronic
books can be accessed through the library catalog by
using the subject search “ebooks.” For home use, a
password is required which is also available in the
library.
The entire library staff wishes you and your
family a Happy Thanksgiving!
Math Department News
Eighty-six students participated in the first
Virginia Math League contest on Tuesday, October
18. Juniors Jenny Xing and Mark Tolep scored 6
points, the maximum number possible. Seniors Asma
Akhtar and Andy Wong, juniors Sourabh
Cheedella, Kavi Muraleetharan, and Christopher
Weyer, and freshman Tanner Karafa were close
behind with five points each. The thirty-minute
competition is held in the cafeteria before school.
Students need only a pencil and a calculator to
participate, and all students are encouraged to attend.
Additional contest dates are November 15, December
6, January 10, February 7, and March 6. Further
information will available on the website.
Homework club is underway! Students who
attend can receive assistance in their current subjects,
they can work on gaps from past classes, or they can
prepare for tests such as the SOL or SAT. A
mathematics teacher or advanced studies student will
always be available. The club meets Monday,
Thursday, and Friday mornings in L401 between 8:20
and 8:50. The schedule is posted on the math
website.
Be sure your student’s calculator has been
permanently marked with some type of ID. It’s a
good idea to record the serial number as well. If you
have recently purchased a calculator and still have the
proof of purchase, please send it to school with your
student. We collect the POP’s in the math department
and use them to acquire additional equipment from
Texas Instruments.
If your student is enrolled in any Algebra I or
Algebra II class or Geometry, he or she can access the
textbook at home by visiting classzone.com. Links
are provided on the math website. First time
admittance requires an activation code which can be
obtained from your student’s math teacher.
If you have any questions concerning
mathematics at Stone Bridge, please contact Rita
Driskill at [email protected] or 571-252-2200.
Lost and Found
We have numerous items that have
accumulated in the lost and found in the Main Office.
Please check for any lost item (especially clothing)
before Friday, Nov. 19, or they will be donated to a
local charity after that date. Thank you.

Band News
The Band Program has been extremely busy
this first quarter. The Marching Bulldogs have been
very successful this fall season. They were awarded
first place in their class at the North Stafford Marching
Invitational and Loudoun Valley Showcase and third
place at the USSBA Northern Virginia Showcase at
Park View. The band was scheduled to travel to
Millbrook High School for the VA State Marching
Band Assessment on October 29. Our early season
snow storm caused the event to be canceled. They
hope to reschedule for November 5. As always, the
band program is very thankful to the Ashburn
community for their generous support of the program.
The Marching Bulldogs wish to congratulate
senior Andre Racanelli (percussion) who has been
named to the U. S. Army All-American Marching
Band. As a member of this elite group, Andre will
travel to San Antonio to perform in the All-American
Bowl featuring the top high school football players and
marching musicians from across the United States.
At recent auditions, four members of the
band program were selected to the North Central VA
Regional Orchestra. Congratulations go out to
Caroline Clouse (Flute), Ben Yehle (French Horn),
T.J.Maistros (Percussion) and Kavi Muraleetharan
(Percussion) for being selected to this honors group.
The group will rehearse November 4 and 5 at
Massoponax High School with the concert held
Saturday afternoon.
Three students were also accepted to the All-
VA Jazz Ensemble after auditions earlier this fall.
Congratulations to Brenton Jackson (Alto
Saxophone), Ian Ferguson (Drumset) and Sam Dugo
(Bass). The group will rehearse in Norfolk November
16-19. The concert will be held at 1:00 on November
19 at the Roper Performing Arts Center. In addition,
three Orchestra members made the Regional
Orchestra; Sam Dugo, Lydia Sohn and Julia Sung.
The annual fall concert will be held
Thursday, November 3 at 7:00 PM. All are invited to
come hear the Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble,

SENIORS: Potomac Falls High School is the test
center for the November 6 SAT and Loudoun County
High School is the site for the December 4 SAT.
Register at www.collegeboard.com or stop by the
Career Center for paper registrations. Seniors should
check the application requirements for their desired
colleges to verify if SAT II subject tests are required.
Be sure to register for these tests as well. Check with
your guidance counselor for more information.
ACT Registration: Registration deadline for the
December 10 test is November 4. Visit www.act.org
to register. The closest test site for the ACT is
Herndon High School.
SAT/ACT Practice: There are several web sites that
students can utilize for test practice. Some of them are
free while others require a fee. Stone Bridge High
School does not endorse any particular site but
provides them here as a service to our students.
Free sites include www.collegeboard.com,
www.review.com and www.act.org. For a fee,
www.kaptest.com, www.satmath.com, www.testu.com.
“One On One with the SAT” is a test prep program

network. Students can access this program under the
“Guidance” section under “Programs” on the
network.
College Applications: Counselors have visited
senior classrooms to discuss the college application
process. All seniors must have a “transcript release
form” on file before transcripts can be sent to
colleges. Applications are processed as they are
submitted to guidance. A minimum of two weeks
must be allowed for processing. For example, if a
college’s due date is November 1st, guidance must
have the required paperwork by October 15th. If you
have questions, please contact your student’s
guidance counselor. The first three transcripts will be
mailed to schools free of charge. There is a $3.00 fee
for each additional transcript to be paid at the time of
the request. Transcripts for scholarship applications
will be provided free.
MILITARY INFORMATION: Representatives
from the different branches of the military will be
visiting Stone Bridge High School on a monthly
schedule. They will set up in the Career Center to
meet and talk with students about military careers and
educational choices. Male students 18 years old must
register with the Selective Service. Visit www.sss.gov
or visit the Career Center for more information.
Procedures for Obtaining Homework Due to
Unexpected Absences: Parents/guardians or
students should call the Guidance Office, (571) 252-
2214, by noon on the second day of the absence to
request homework when the absence is expected to
last more than three school days. This will help
ensure that work will be available by the end of the
third school day. If a student is to return on the third
day, he or she should pick up the missed work
directly from their teachers upon returning to class.
Student Withdrawal Procedures: The parent or
guardian of the withdrawing student MUST notify the
guidance office of the student’s impending departure
and obtain a “Withdrawal/Transfer Form” from the
guidance secretary at least three days in advance of
the planned departure. The parent/guardian is
required to complete and sign the form and return it to
the guidance office. The signed form will be given to
the student during his or her last two days of school.
The student will walk the form through the building
obtaining teacher signatures, withdrawal grades and
returning text books and library books. All books
must be returned to avoid a deficiency. Lockers
MUST be cleaned out and PE locks returned to the
The Stone Bridge Times 5
PE teacher. Before leaving on the last day, the student
will bring the completed form to the guidance office
for processing. If you have any questions, please do
not hesitate to call Guidance at 571-252-2214.
ETHICS AND LEADERSHIP DAY 2012: SBHS
was privileged to provide last year’s seniors with an
Ethics and Leadership Day. This spring, we want to
provide the class of 2012 with the same opportunity.
The purpose of this event is to provide all seniors with
thought provoking topics for which they must decide
the outcome while considering the impact those
decisions have on society. In order to continue this
program, we need to raise the majority of the funds.
Please see the enclosed flyer if you or your company
can help.
SCHOLARSHIPS: Students, especially seniors, need
to sign up with www.wiredscholar.com and
www.fastweb.com to start looking for scholarships.
The Career Center also maintains a list of scholarships
that are available. Students should check these
weekly. The Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA) is the government’s form to determine if
a student qualifies for certain grants, federally funded
work-study or low interest loans. ALL families
should complete this form. Many merit scholarships
require this form as well as many Loudoun based
scholarships. The government encourages filing this
form on the web. It is faster and more accurate. This
form cannot be completed until January 1, 2012.
The information required is based on this tax year. To
be proactive however, students and their
parent/guardian can request PIN numbers from the
government now. Log onto www.pin.ed.gov to
request your PINs.

Stone Bridge High School Project Graduation
Presents
The 2011 Official White House Christmas Ornament The 2011 White House Christmas Ornament honors the administration of Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth President of the United States. The 2011 ornament reflects the excitement that President Roosevelt, his wife Edith, and their lively young family brought to life at the White House. There had been no children living in the White House in the years since the departure of President Grover Cleveland and his family in March 1897. The front face of the ornament is a color illustration derived from a political cartoon drawn by William A Rogers in 1901. Capturing the anticipation associated with the family's first White House Christmas, a jolly Santa Claus crosses the snow covered North Lawn carrying a large bag of toys over his shoulder and announces, "I hear that there are some kids in the White House this year."

The reverse side of the 2011 White House Christmas ornament features a second color image inspired by a period illustration. It captures the moment in 1903 when young Archie (the second youngest of Roosevelt's children) reveals to his family a Christmas tree he had hidden in a seamstress's closet in the White House.

Each year, a fun group comes together to plan and execute one of the most talked about events of our child’s high school career: the all-night party held the night of graduation, a.k.a.:
“Project Graduation”
Make no mistake, this is one heck of a party and we need parent’s from ALL GRADES to help throughout the year as well as the night of the party. Sure it’s hard work and crazy hours, but… the end product is so rewarding!! Feedback from Seniors has consistently described the party as totally awesome and one of the best times they’ve ever had at SBHS! To make the party such a success, the PG Committee meets monthly throughout the year to plan fresh ideas for each graduating class. We are in search of folks to help throughout the year, as well as volunteering for set-up, chaperone, and break-down the actual party day!! We urge you to sign-up to volunteer, or come to a meeting or contact us to learn more about Project Graduation.
Project Grad is an important, well-loved tradition at SBHS and one that we want to be sure continues for all of our students.
Attention Senior Parents – For the first time we will be selling Project Graduation tickets starting in the
fall at a discounted price of $40.00! (compared to $60.00 the day of the party). Order Now!
Thanks for reading!
