Urchinwood Manor – horseriding for all
Urchinwood Manor in Congresbury has an accessibility-marked centre where
you can learn to ride or get back to it. The centre works with a number of
local groups and agencies to arrange riding opportunities for disabled riders.
One regular rider Catherine said: “I like riding Tosca and I enjoy walking,
trotting and patting the horse.”
A carer Gill, who supports another regular rider Yinka, commented: “He really
enjoys riding and is so excited to come. He knows exactly which day riding is
on and though he may not be able to talk he understands it all. It is very
therapeutic and helpful to him. He likes the animals and also mixes and
interacts with the people, which is good for his confidence and understanding.”
Horseriding is fun and great exercise, so come and join in. Call the Urchinwood

Sporting opportunities at transformed tennis courts
A £115,000 scheme has transformed the old Grove Park tennis courts in
Weston-super-Mare into a state-of-the-art all-weather facility that provides
a range of sporting opportunities.
Weston College and North Somerset Council have worked in partnership to
create a Multi-Use Games Area at the former tennis courts in the town centre,
across the road from the college’s Knightstone campus.
The facility’s full name is the Weston College Academy of Sport Grove Park 3G
Pitch. It's an artificial grass facility, which is marked out as a football pitch,
but can be used for a range of sporting activities.
Weston College funded the project, and the pitch will be used by college
students during term-time.
However, outside term time, at weekends and during evenings, it will be
available for hire to the wider community. Charges are yet to be decided, but
are expected to be around £15 an hour with some concessions available.
Paul Taylor, Sports Development and Performance Manager at Weston College,
said: “This is the first time Weston College has been able to provide a sports
pitch like this. It can be used for a wide variety of different sports and
activities, such as football, tennis, volleyball and tag rugby.”
The height of the security fencing, colour of the pitch, and lack of
floodlighting have been agreed between Weston College, North Somerset
Council and the St John’s Church Diocese.
The pitch is expected to be available for community bookings from early
December. For further information email [email protected] or
call 01934 411 450.

Players
Matt plays his part in England victory
Weston cricketer Matt Blamire played his part in England’s victory in the first
international tournament in physical disability.
Blamire coaches and plays at Weston Cricket Club. He has attended our
Sportarray inclusive sport training to help encourage more disabled people to
take up the sport at his club.
Former Weston College pupil Blamire, who had his left leg amputated after an
industrial accident, added: “We broke so many records out there. We were
the first team to be involved in a multi-team tournament, the first team to win
it and we broke records like our highest T20 score. I came on for the final
seven overs in the final and was the 12th man.”
To find out more about any of ECB’s four disability programmes (physical
disability, learning disability, deaf or visually impaired), please visit

[Adapted article from the Weston Mercury – see www.tinyurl.com/o7vwjf5]
Blamire was part of the 15-man squad which
won the inaugural Red Cross International
T20 Tournament for people with physical
disabilities in Bangladesh.
The 29-year-old returned to his job as a
mobile plant instructor and said: “It still
hasn’t sunk in yet, it is such a surreal
feeling.”
England lost their opening game against
Bangladesh, but went on to beat India,
Pakistan and Afghanistan in the group
stages, before defeating Pakistan in the
final by 19 runs.

Training
Mental health awareness training in Weston – 25 February
In our last newsletter we mentioned our aim to develop more opportunities for
people with mental health issues, for which we do not currently have wide
enough provision within sport and physical activity.
In partnership with the Carlton Centre in Weston, we’re organising a training
session on Thursday 25 February, 6 – 9pm. It will be aimed at increasing
understanding among sports club and physical activity coaches, instructors
volunteers, welfare officers and leisure facility staff.
Attendees will receive a certificate on completion of the training session.
Places normally cost £20 each but through Sportarray we will offer free
places to all attendees looking to support the development of opportunities in
North Somerset for people with mental health issues.
Full details will be included in our next newsletter, but if you would like to

Awards for All
Awards for All is a quick and easy way to get small Lottery grants of between
£300 and £10,000.
They fund projects which address the issues, needs and aspirations of local
communities and people. They will fund a wide range of community projects
aimed at developing skills, improving health, revitalising the local environment
and enabling people to become more active citizens.
Although they don’t fund ‘sport’, they fund the outcome of sport, e.g. better
chances in life, improved health and wellbeing or stronger communities – all of
which sport can contribute towards.
Here is a good You Tube video from Awards for All explaining this popular
funding stream, including the types of things it will fund, who is eligible and
the outcomes your projects must achieve. Visit www.tinyurl.com/ngl6h3f
