2012 Chicken Ship Regatta – Sept. 1st–3rd

Labor Day weekend is just around the corner which means it's time to start preparing for the 2012 annual Chicken Ship Regatta up the Petaluma River!

For those of you planning to head up on Saturday: Vessels should try to stay close together while heading up the River to minimize bridge openings at D Street. Radio contact will be monitored on Ch. 72. Trophies will be awarded as deemed necessary by the Committee. Remember to write a CHICKEN LIMERICK on your trip up the River because the loudest groan will be awarded.

Saturday: The Petaluma Yacht Club, www.petalumayachtclub.com, has been kind enough to let us use their clubhouse and BBQ. Don't forget to pull out your chicken garb and strut your stuff because best costume will be also be awarded during the festivities. Bar opens at 1700, potluck is at 1800.

On Sunday: There will be the Blind-Folded Dinghy Dash in the Petaluma River turning basin somewhere around 1500 with dockside potluck to follow.

What to bring: * Your best chicken attire * A chicken or sailing limerick * An item for the bilge dive contest on Sat. night * A dinghy if you have one * A side dish for Saturday night, MMBA will BBQ chicken & or sausages * Some yummy grub for Sunday’s dockside potluck * A Chicken Ship Perpetual Trophy that you won last year… and never returned * Your musical instruments & performance talents

From the Quarterdeck As our season of events begins to slow I always think of all the help we get with each activity from members. The Regatta could not happen without assistance from Encinal and Sausalito Yacht Clubs. Sausalito provides the committee boat and crew to help Dick Wrenn keep all those starts and finishes in order with proper times. An unsung hero is Chris Newell. He keeps his computer tracking vessels and their times so that we can get the awards to the proper boats and print their times and finishing order. Encinal Yacht Club provides the great facilities and meals for our after- race celebration and the remainder of our weekend of visiting friends in that wonderful raft-up. Bill Belmont as Race Chairman makes sure we all get our invitations and race packets in a timely manner. Terry Klaus makes arrangements for our luncheon at St. Francis Yacht Club and logistics at Encinal. There are so many more unnamed helpers. Thank you all many times over. We could not have such a great time without your assistance. The Boat Show at Corinthian Yacht Club provides yet another spectacular weekend. Again Terry and Bill have worked long hours to coordinate activities and a wonderful dinner for all involved. The Staff is fun and most helpful. It is always great to have chefs welcome us back with smiles and gourmet food. The judges for the show give up hours to decide winners. These are difficult decisions as there are beautiful boats on display for attendees. The staff at Corinthian works many long hours to make room for our show – moving boats both in and out of their slips. Karleen Harris made and distributed a current member list. Again, many more people help us with this weekend. Thank you all again.

Linda Kibler has helped streamline the T-shirt sales and storage. Ariane Paul keeps making our web page more beautiful with each update. Norm Harris keeps our Shellback current and is always improving its design. Richard Gillette will be coordinating our off shore cruise to Drake’s Bay. Yum, oysters for all. Linda is going to be heading up our Chicken Ship trip to Petaluma. If you have not boated to this city I suggest you make an effort to attend. There will be fun and games, a great meal, a relaxed weekend to explore and just hang out.

A final thanks goes to Steve Kibler. He has just been elected to be a Director. We all enjoy the events of the year and Steve will put his fine touch to making yet another event most enjoyable. Thank you for making this commitment. I have not forgotten the other board members. You all work diligently behind every event and we surely would not have such a great organization without you.

Patty Henderson, Commodore

Heritage Day at China Camp Sat. Aug. 11, 2012, 11:30 am – 4:00 pm China Camp State Park will be celebrating Heritage Day this year on Saturday, August 11, from 11:30 AM until 4:00 PM. There will be a potluck BBQ on the beach after the day’s festivities. At this time no word of water taxi, so bring a dinghy or buddy-boat with someone. By car, park outside the gate as it gets locked at night. It is a particularly important year for this celebration, because there is no longer the threat of closure and we know now that the park will remain open. This year's event will feature musical and dance performances, calligraphy and origami, and educational displays. There will be arts and crafts for sale, with 20% of the proceeds going to help Friends of China Camp. The Grace Quan, a replica Chinese junk, will be docked offshore and the Alma, a historic scow schooner, will arrive during the day.

2012 Master Mariners Regatta Re-cap

This year’s regatta has come and gone, but was a fine one. I opted to help out with the Race Committee rather than sail and spent the day on MERCURY along with Dick Wrenn, Chris Newell, and Jeff Zarwell with great support from Sausalito Yacht Club’s Race Committee crew. We had a few snafus here and there, and truly appreciate the affected skippers for their patience and working with us as we dealt with corrections as best as we could. As with most other clubs, we are volunteers and are not perfect. That being said, our members and crews had a great day and enjoyed a fun awards party and dinner at the Encinal Yacht Club afterwards. There were several vessels that were DNS for whatever reason, and a couple that had to fall out as DNF. As I was asked to write the coverage for Latitude 38’s July issue, I will not re-hash the entire event, but will instead point you to a copy of the article at this link: http://issuu.com/mmba/docs/lat38-201207-mmba-regatta

Per the quote from our Commodore Patty Henderson in the article, she says the regatta is “an excellent excuse for having your boat ready for the sailing season. There are very nice people involved in our organization and it’s an honor to be around a group of people that are keeping these boats in fine sailing form and don’t find each other crazy for doing so.”

Page 4: The Shellback August 2012

The Shellback, August 2012, Pg. 4

We would not be able to pull this event off without the support of so many people and groups. Besides Jeff and the Sausalito Yacht Club, Master Mariners is honored to have the support of many local companies as Regatta Sponsors and lists them on our website. The Encinal Yacht Club and its officers and staff did a great job hosting us, as did the St. Francis Yacht Club during the Sponsors/Skippers luncheon. Thank you to Staff Commodore Terry Klaus for helping with the arrangements at St. Francis YC and Encinal YC; Caleb and Barbi Whitbeck for our wonderful clothing; Bill Belmont for handing the Regatta; Steve Hutchinson for handling Sponsorship; and Mariah’s Eyes for photos of the Sponsors/Skippers Luncheon. Below are results and photo links.

2012 Wooden Boat Show at the Corinthian YC

Wooden Boat Show

AWARDS

Bright Star – People’s Choice

Freelance – Al Lutz Perpetual

Mist – Corinthian Cup

Lydia – Stone Cup The boat show judging was difficult because many of the boats keep looking better every year. Bright Star, Ted & Laddie Hall's 53' Edson Schock cutter won the People’s Choice trophy. Ted has been working on the boat and he also has professional yacht maintainer, Trina Merriman doing her magic, and people voted for this vessel. Simpatico, Tom & Barbara McGowan's beautiful ketch, and Nike, Al Cavy's outstanding cutter were a couple of the others that got lots of the people’s votes.

Freelance, the 39' Henry Gielow design, owned by Rich & Liz Salvini, won the Al Lutz Perpetual trophy. Rich has been working on the boat for over ten years and the exterior is exceptional. For the major work, Rich had the vessel inside the shed at the Berkeley Marine Center for a full year while he commuted from Burlingame most days to work on it. Completed restoration work includes: frames, re-rigging, new rudder, new electrical system, new auto pilot, chain plates etc. He currently has Steve Hutchinson working on a new cabin sole, while he works on the decks.

Mist, the 25' Pacific Clipper that won the Stone Cup five years ago, won the Corinthian Cup this year. Owner Joseph Master gives credit to a full boat cover for keeping his varnish looking nice. As the boat has a varnished hull and interior, she shines like a jewel. He even has the original Stuart Turner engine shined up like new. His neighbors testify that he sails it quite often out of Sausalito.

Lydia, the clipper bow 40' Edson Shock cutter, won the Stone Cup. Bob & Kristi Hanelt were working hard on Lydia right up to the boat show. Bob lays his own gold leaf in the cove stripe in classic yacht fashion, and Kristi is the other half of the paint and varnish team. Lydia lost its mast a few years back, and they had it replicated in varnished Sitka Spruce, so the vessel is as built. Hutchinson Marine's Steve, did some serious work on the beautiful clipper bow recently. Bob graduated from the California Maritime Academy, and worked on Lydia when it belonged to Captain Carl Bowman, the head of the Nautical Sciences department at CMA. They knew what they wanted in a sailing vessel, as they had circumnavigated the world in their 53' S&S yawl Skylark.

Congratulations to all of the vessels that participated in the boat show!

Dick Wrenn

RECENT EVENTS

At our annual MMBA/Spaulding BBQ there was a big presentation made. Last year the MMBF put Corinthian Yacht Club up to a challenge to raise funds for FREDA’s restoration, and the MMBF would match the amount. Expectations were exceeded, and both groups donated $15,000 towards the project to total $30,000. Thanks to Tom List and all the volunteers that helped put on the BBQ. In the photo below are: Terry Klaus, MMBF; Andrea Rey, SWBC; Jeff McQueen, Corinthian YC; and Mike Douglas, MMBF.

At the Summer Sailstice event at Encinal Yacht Club there were lots of activities including the annual Boat Building Contest. Team BMC (Berkeley Marine Center) won, comprised of Cree Partridge, Dean Gurke, and Steve Kibler.

Last weekend I made a quick trip down to the Channel Islands Harbor to sail on Dauntless with Paul Plotts and his crew in the McNish Classic put on by the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club. We had a great time and saw many MMBA friends and vessels. Rose of Sharon, Byron Chamberlin, placed 3rd in the Schooner class; CF Koehler raced on Finesse as Sally is undergoing a restoration right now; Dennis Peitso sailed on Raiatea, and his brother Andy sailed with us on Dauntless; Dick McNish raced Cheerio II; and Jeff Woods (who we know through the tall ship Lynx) raced Spitfire. 2012 McNish Classic photos: https://picasaweb.google.com/arianepaul/2012McNishClassic

This year’s event, last Saturday, was in honor of Harold Sommers, and was the 32nd anniversary of Galilee Harbor. I ran in to lots of friends there and enjoyed listening to some of the fine live music

performed by the Sausalito Waterfront Pickers. Here is a sample video of them and the event:
